Re: Move to a new computer

2011-07-10 Thread Jack
Hi,

J I need to move TB from my old computer with XP to my new one with
J Windows 7.

J Using version 4.2.40

TF Those were versions in the past when we recommended to copy
TF directories and registry. V4 does not have the restore problem any
TF more, and I would recommend to use the internal back-up function,
TF install the program on the new computer, and restore from the back-up
TF file.

I gave this a try and it worked for the most part. There is one
problem though. I have over 800 folders in five different accounts. In
one account, the emails for one of the folders and its subfolders did
not get copied. The structure is correct and all other folders copied
correctly but those few are not showing any emails.

The problem seems to be with the path. My old computer uses e:\...
while my new one uses i:\When I start TB on the new one, it says
it can't find e:\ I checked the path setting for that account and
it is set to default, like all of the others. But I tried changing it
by browsing and clicking to the new location but it still fails. If I
restart and view the location in the settings it is correct, but the
errors still occur for those folders and no emails are found.

The email count for the folders is correct, showing there are X number
of emails in each. They are just not visible.

I tried another backup of just that one account and made sure all
sub-folders were selected and the include sub-folders box was checked.
But after restoring, the same thing happened.

If I use the maintenance center and try to repair those folders, it
says it can't be done because the message base doesn't exist.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next to get
these missing emails to display?

PVN Try correcting the path in your shortcut.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't know what the shortcut is.
Would you explain that in more detail please?

Does that support something equivalent to TB!'s %cookie macro? I
followed the link and read around a bit but couldn't find anything
about adding taglines to messages.

J Thanks, I appreciate the help. But I've been thinking about it and I

NZc snip
I have never been happy with the official support of TB and this looks
like a good opportunity to make the change.

NZc I'm sorry, but I do have to comment on this one.

NZc Unless my time stamps are totally off, you received an answer to your
NZc question in less than 2 hours after you posted it. This mailing list
NZc has never failed to answer a question of mine since I started used TB!
NZc over 10 years ago.

I think you may have misunderstood me or maybe I don't understand this
list. Is this list considered official support for TB? When I said
official support, I was referring to contacting TB directly, not
posting here. For the last major problem I had with TB I sent an email
to them via their website. They did respond but they couldn't fix the
problem. The last response I received from them said something like,

If that doesn't fix it, we can't help you. This ticket is now
closed.

That is simply not an acceptable answer for a program that is paid
for. There are other reasons that I am unhappy with TB but it doesn't
serve any purpose to list them here.

NZc Thunderbird has it's pluses, but TB! is still the best stand-alone
NZc e-mail client I've ever used.

I suppose it depends upon what you mean by the best. Anyone
following the progress of TB can see a clear pattern of new releases
coming out, which have to be paid for, before problems in the previous
releases have been fixed. I don't hold it against anyone for charging
for their work but they should support it too, which the programmers
do a poor job of. At least that is the way I see based on personal
experience.

In fact, we just had the same question on the German beginner list

went smoothly.

The only issue was that the bat didn't flap when new mail had arrived,
but it turned out to be a setting in Windows.
