[Texascavers] Spring Creek Cave open January 6

2017-11-13 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
Texas cavers:

DFW Grotto has had a project of thoroughly exploring and mapping Spring Creek
Cave, north of Boerne, the past few years. We are getting close to finishing.

Our next trip will be on Saturday, January 6. This is an invitation to join us.
We will meet at the gate to Cave With a Name (CWAN) promptly at 9:00 a.m. that
Saturday morning. A wetsuit is MANDATORY. One could be rented from a dive shop.

The cave has deep water through about half of the suggested tourist route, but
swim fins are not necessary. You can pull yourself along on the walls. A map
will be provided showing the suggested route to the Shower Stall waterfall, a
scenic destination.
Good photographs and videos can be had if your gear is packed in a totally
waterproof container.

Camping at CWAN on Saturday night is encouraged. We will have a roaring
campfire and Texas caver-style camaraderie.

Questions? Ask.

[Texascavers] Write-in candidate for TSA treasurer

2017-10-21 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
--- Begin Message ---
Hello fellow Texas cavers,

Our DFW Grotto chairperson, Jules Rincon, somehow didn’t get on the TSA
election ballot. She’s running for treasurer. Please consider writing her name
in as your vote for her.

Jules is super gung-ho. She has done a superb job of breathing fresh air into
our grotto. She got limitless energy and good ideas. As treasurer she’s sure to
keep the accounts accurate and transparent. I’d like to see her run for TSA
chair some day.

Have a good one,

Bill Steele
Irving, Texas

Yes, the narrows was crowed with people at its opening. I went farther and
farther until there was just a trickle of people. I decided to go until there
wasn't anyone else. Eventually it got real narrow and one young couple came the
other way. I asked them if anyone was ahead. They said no, no one else is up
there. I went a couple more bends and turned around. For training's sake for
caving, I blasted out as fast as I could.

Re: [Texascavers] mountain-climbing related

2017-05-21 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
In the article at this link:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-39989992

It says this:

"Mountaineers said the Hillary Step may have fallen victim to Nepal's
devastating 2015 earthquake."

Forty years ago, in 1977, there were three expeditions to Huautla caves (they
were given the name Sistema Huautla in 1980). Between the second and third
expeditions in 1977 there was a major earthquake in the area. There was still
building rubble on the streets in towns. We watched closely for anything
changed in the cave we were working, La Grieta. We only saw fresh rockfall on
the floor in one place, a dome 500 m deep in the cave that had a breakdown
ceiling.

Last month cavers were in that part of Sistema Huautla for the first time since
1977. There are plans for the dome with the unstable ceiling to be climbed next
year.

Cavingly,

[Texascavers] If you know Bob Liebman

2017-05-08 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
I'm going to send him a letter tomorrow.

Bill Steele

Bob Liebman Update

If you are a relatively new caver and don't remember Bob & Bob there's no need
to read further.

As I'm sure you know, Bob Liebman is one of the Bobs in Bob & Bob. His cave
gear sales operation was a fixture at many caving events from around 1973 until
the early 2000s.

Bob is currently being treated for cancer and is in a rehab center near
Lewisburg, West Virginia. I was in the area this weekend stopped in to visit
him. He is really really weak, but he's alert and (as always) very
talkative. He seemed to be in fairly good spirits, but lamented that Bob & Bob
is now just a memory.

Several times during my visit he mentioned that he has received letters from
cavers thanking him for the personal service and advice he gave them as they
were getting started rather than just selling them stuff
and then ignoring them.

If Bob Liebman was instrumental in getting you properly equipped for caving
please take a minute and write him a short note thanking him for the advise he
gave you along with whatever you purchased. I think he will appreciate hearing
from his over 40 years of customers.

Bob doesn't do e-mail so please write to him at the following address:

Bob Liebman
PO Box 441
Lewisburg, WV 24901

Please pass this message on to any other cave-related e-mail lists.

Bob Hoke

Bill Stone has problems with feral hogs and I think he said he's got a live

Re: [Texascavers] Movie by the Pond, at Pete Strickland's

2016-11-10 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
I saw the original play Hair in Chicago in 1969. Met TAG caving (he named TAG)
legend Richard Schreiber there. He was stationed in Minot, ND with the Air
Force.

I love this movie. Treat Williams as Berger (very Austin-like), John Savage as
Claude, and Beverly D'Angelo as Sheila. I thought it's better than the play.
And the music is SO good. "You ask me why, why I'm a hairy guy."

Let me clarify what constitutes authorship on a scientific article.

It does not necessarily mean that a person wrote one of the paragraphs.
In fact, in the future we may have artificial intelligence to thank for
writing much of the routine text in our articles and technical manuals.

It DOES mean that an author is a person that is responsible for one or
 more of the following:

Coming up with the original idea (i.e., the hypothesis) for the
experiment Collecting data Analyzing data Presenting data (in graphical,
written or other forms such as videos, etc.) Supervising the people that
collect, analyze and present the data Drawing important conclusions from
the data and testing new hypotheses that result from this all-important
step Writing the text of the final document

You want and NEED all of these people to be listed as authors-as they
are the ones that are legitimately responsible for the final published
work. If there are any questions about what is presented in the work,
 everyone knows who is responsible.

We call this transparency, which unfortunately is lacking in other

[Texascavers] UTG program last night

2016-08-04 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
Last night, from the comfort of my home in Irving, Texas, I watched and enjoyed
the program live from Austin. I used the app Periscope. It was easy.

The program was a slide show and lively narrative by Fernando Hernandez about
this year's PESH (Proyecto Espeleologico Sistema Huautla) expedition. This was
Fernando's first trip to Huautla. His perspective as a Mexican citizen,
excellent caver, fluent in English, and culturally sensitive, made for a very
interesting talk.

My understanding is that the video of Fernando's talk will be available at
Periscope for a short amount of time.

One thing that Fernando did not mention is that he was the winner of the PESH
2016 Expedition "Rookie of the Year" award. He hustled underground and was a
pleasure to be around.

Cavingly,

Bill Steele

Rick Rigg went to Huautla once when I wasn't there, I think in 1981. He was
originally from PA but moved to Idaho. He's probably 7 or so years older than
me and hasn't done much in many years. I've never been caving with him

The NSS needs to raise money now to refinance the mortgage on its new office
building in Huntsville, Alabama. Please go on and be committed to caving if you
are a caver, and if you are not an NSS member, now's the time to join.

And if you are a NSS member, then join Team 404. I am a member of Team 404. If
404 cavers allow $25 a month to be directly withdrawn from their bank account,
the mortgage payment is met. All above that pays down the mortgage all the
sooner.

Tomorrow night I am giving the program at the DFW Grotto meeting. Before I do,
I'm going to read the above about being an NSS member and talk about the
benefits of membership. I may even paraphrase JFK and say, "Ask not what the
NSS can do for you, ask what you can do for the NSS." You can admit that caving
is a main interest of yours, become a member of the NSS, and join Team 404.
I'll ask for a show of hands of who is not an NSS member. And I'll frown at
those who are not.

Cavingly,

Bill Steele NSS 8072 (joined at age 16)

 Hello Cavers!

I'm excited to give y'all a quick update, and ask for help from my caving
 community again.

After finishing up some insurance drama, and getting confident underground
again after my accident 2 years ago, I've move to Louisiana and will be
starting a new job in just a couple of weeks!

As a confidence building exercise (plus it's something I really want to do)
i'll be traveling to costa Rica this Saturday, and returning next Friday.
This will be my first time traveling solo internationally, and there's a
little anxiety from the parental units and boyfriend.

I am relishing the opportunity to travel alone and spread my wings a little
bit, after everything that's going on in my life for over two years, but I
do want to make everyone in my life feel a little more comfortable with this
decision. My question is, are there any members of our caving community
living in Costa Rica at the moment? I know there are quite a few Texas
Cavers in Mexico. Again, everything has been thoroughly planned, but it
would be nice to know there is someone local to reach out to, in event of an
 emergency.

 Thanks everyone!

[Texascavers] Scottsboro Mtn. closed

2015-06-21 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
This is from Bill Steele, cwilliamste...@gmail.com

Texas cavers,

I have camped at the caver camp on Scottsboro Mountain above Scottsboro,
Alabama like many of you. It's also known as Tater Knob.

This is from TagNet:

1) Scottsboro Mountain closed for camping indefinitely
 By: Andy Zellner (Marietta, Georgia)
 andyzell...@gmail.com

I know many cavers have camped or stayed on Scottsboro Mountain (Melody
Mountain to locals) before. It seems that our access there has finally come to
an end. Not because of the actions of anyone in particular, it was just time.

A few days ago, a friend drove by the gate and noticed that the caver combo
lock had gone missing along with most of the other locks. I sent an email to
the Sheppard family, and learned that Mrs. Sheppard passed away a few weeks
ago. She had five daughters who are now in their 50s-60s and all have different
ideas of what to do with the
valuable property.

So at least for now, they have closed access to everyone. I do not forsee them
opening it back up again, though cavers at least had always been good stewards
there. They put up with our shenanigans for over 25 years, really. :)

So please pass the word, I'm afraid the end of an era has come in TAG. And
don't do anything dumb like taking the gate off the hinges and driving up there
anyway - we need to move on.

Thanks!

--Andy Zellner

 Hello all -

 Sad news from Alberta.

Mike Boon, most recently resident in Calgary, passed away over the weekend.
Mike Boon is truly a legend in caving circles, commencing his caving in the
UK in the late 1950s and was the first adopter of the aqualung for sump
diving there. Tales of Boon will fill volumes. He pioneered techniques for
exploring dangerous river caves in Central America. He was the author of a
nice self-published volume entitled Down to a Sunless Sea. There are likely
copies around in caver's libraries and occasional used book stores. He made
many contributions to Canadian caving, mostly in Rockies explorations. He
caused quite a stir in the 1970s with a winter solo exploration to distant
reaches of Castleguard Cave. Truly, one of the great personalities in caving
 history.

There are plans at present for a memorial sometime in the spring.

For those of you who have not already heard through other channels . . .

The Board of Directors of the Southeastern Cave Conservancy is extremely
pleased to announce our latest acquisition, the Stephens Gap Callahan Cave
 Preserve!

On December 12, 2014, SCCi purchased 77.8 acres of karst hillside property
that contains the entire extent of Stephens Gap Cave as well as four other
known caves, including Pipeside Pit. The preserve is located in Jackson
County, Alabama, about six miles west of the city of Scottsboro.

The total cost for acquisition and long-term stewardship of the property is
 approximately $150,000.

Stephens Gap Cave is a crown jewel among the thousands of known caves in the
TAG region. The cave has seven entrances and nearly one half-mile of known
passage. Its spectacular entrance area, including a 143-foot deep open-air pit
entrance and a separate large walk-down slope entrance, is perhaps the most
photogenic cave entrance in the entire United States. Stephens Gap Cave has
been featured in National Geographic magazine and has even been the site of
many weddings! The main pit contains two waterfalls that cascade down the pit
and an elevated area known as the Pedestal. Under the right conditions, shafts
of sunlight extend over 100 feet below the surface and illuminate the
waterfalls and the Pedestal, making for a stunning scene that presents
 remarkable photographic opportunities.

Stephens Gap Cave is widely enjoyed by cavers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts
because the cave (including the Pedestal) is accessible both by cavers
who use vertical rope techniques as well as by visitors who walk down the
 large, naturally lit slope entrance.

It is through the support of our loyal donors and members that the SCCi was
able to purchase this cave to be preserved and protected as well as kept
 accessible for all to enjoy.

But we still need your help to pay for the SCCi's latest, and likely most
popular, acquisition. You can contribute in many ways!

Buy A Piece of Stephens Gap Cave in our online eStore
 [https://app.etapestry.com/cart/SoutheasternCaveConservancyIn/default/index.php].
Many named features, including the pedestal, entrances, and waterfalls, as
well as one-foot slices of both main entrances, are already available, with
more to be added soon! Once purchased, your name will be added to the official
SCCi cave map. Many donors have already staked their claim, so if you have a
certain piece in mind don't delay!

Re: [Texascavers] Mammoth Cave Weekend Update for Roots in the Park, Nov. 7 and 8, 2014

2014-11-11 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
Very well done report, Preston. I'm envious, especially for the four hour
Salts Cave Trip led by Ranger Rick Olson. I've been all over that cave and
find it fascinating. I'm sure that the skinny wooden pole, set in place
thousands of years ago by Woodlands Indians, is still leaning where they left
it to climb up to an upper level.

It was in the cave in 1971 with cave archaeologist Patti Jo Watson when I
learned what the word coprolite means. We were on our way to the back of the
cave to look for them and on the way I finally asked what they are to chuckles.
We turned over rocks where some minerals had been scraped from the wall and
found some.

The focus of the weekend was the Lee Family and their contribution to Mammoth
Cave. It was a pleasure talking with Mr. Dan Lee, 87 and members of his
family. Coy Hansen, 93, was also in attendance. Coy is a brother of the very
famous Pete Hansen. Friday evening one of the area's historians and
genealogical experts, Norman Warnell, presented a program on the Lee Family.
Not only was Dan Lee born in what became Mammoth Cave National Park, but he
was a guide in the cave for many years. Mr. Lee was then a ranger at
Shenandoah National Park. Next Mr. Lee was superintendant of Custer
Battlefield National Monument and he ended his career in the park service as
superintendant of Vicksburg National Military Park. Mr. Lee and his wife,
Alice, then moved back to Cave City and volunteered eight years in the
 offices of MCNP.

Park Ranger David Kem gave a program Saturday evening on the Lee Family.
David, who has been at MCNP for 5 years, is the author of a new book The
 Kentucky Cave Wars.

Another new book is out, The Legacy of Archibald Miller, by Eileen Gonzales.
Mr. Miller was the first manager of the cave. In 1808, Fleming Gatewood
brought Archibald to Mammoth Cave to manage the mining and processing
operations of the petre-dirt for the manufacture of gunpowder. Shari and I
hope to participate in the restoration of the Archibald Miller Family Burial
Plot at Holton Cemetery on the northwest corner of Flint Ridge in the park.

A brief summary of other weekend events include: A four hour Salts Cave
Trip led by Ranger Rick Olson. A three mile round trip hike to Holton
Cemetery led by Ranger Johnny Meridith. And a three stop tour led by Ranger
John Davis to the entrance of Long Cave. Next was a stop at the site of the
Homelike Inn, birthplace of Dan Lee. This is close to the present day cave
elevator. And last, Mammoth Cave Baptist Church Cemetery on Flint Ridge.

Next year, 2015, will be the 75th anniversary of Mammoth Cave National Park.
It will also be the 200th anniversary of operation as a commercial cave.

A longer Roots in the Park recap may be available soon. This annual event
occurs the second weekend of November and is hosted by the Park Service, Greg
Davis and Karen Phillips. There were around 50 in attendance. The next annual
Mammoth Cave event is the Christmas Singing in the Cave the first Sunday of
 December.

All of Activities Newsletters 11-30, except 29, are still available on paper

This brings the number of pages of older AMCS magazines and bulletins free

Bill this is a monumental achievement. Recently I mentioned Gruta de
Balancanche, Yucatan. I searched the 3250 maps on the website and I do not
see the Balancanche map I was looking for. It was by David McKenzie, pretty
sure, and not only was it an excellent map, but one of the first ever, if
not the first, to use blue to show water. This map was on the wall at 1307
1/2 Kirkwood for years. Somewhere in my basement I have another copy.

Searchable PDF files of AMCS Activities Newsletters numbers 21-30, for
1995-2007, have been added to the Association for Mexican Cave Studies web
 site. See http://www.mexicancaves.org/nl/cat.html.

All of Activities Newsletters 11-30, except 29, are still available on
paper for only $3 each, plus shipping; see
 http://www.mexicancaves.org/finance/order.html for ordering information.

This brings the number of pages of older AMCS magazines and bulletins free
on the web to 5500. Links to the original Newsletter volumes 1-5,
1965-1977, are at http://www.mexicancaves.org/nl/oldNL.html, and links to
 AMCS bulletins are at http://www.mexicancaves.org/bul/bulcat.html.

The web site also contains searchable PDFs of 1573 pages of other
organizations' publications on Mexican cave biology. See
 http://www.mexicancaves.org/other/otherpubs.html .

So the total number of pages of PDF files at mexicancaves.org is over 7000.
