The agraharam has a charm of its own and very often we long for it when we get tired of our busy lives in the cities. We had to leave our agraharams to earn money to support our families. Most of us would have sold their houses when they left for the cities. When we retire from services, naturally we look forward to going back to the agraharams again. Unfortunately most of the houses in the agraharams are occupied by members of other communities. Living in the present environment in villages is impossible as our culture seldom match theirs. I would like to put forward a suggestion in this regards. All those who intend to live together in an agraharam could jointly think of constructing a new agraharam in a place of our choice. In all respects, it would look like an agraharam but it would have modern facilities as we find in townships. We can have common facilities like a small temple and a samooha madom. We can have a guest house where we can accommodate guests of the members on special occasions. I believe that we can experience a feeling of togetherness again in such an environment. The principle of “one for all and all for each” must be maintained in the agraharam. An ideal place in my mind for such an agraharam is the birth place of our spiritual Guru Adi Sankara or any area near Kalady. The summer months here are not so bad as Palakkad. Dear All It has been noticed that the poor needy deserving students of the community is helped by fellow affluent members. It is an excellent service, which deserves high appreciation. Many willing to render helping hand out of sympathy, and do not demand any publicity. A few due to organizational requirements they are committed to inform donors members. Please advise all our community members to send a Request for assistance in advance through these column. so that the influential, informative members may able to guide the needy in getting admission, getting scholarships/loans, meeting the needy's educational expenses in various ways. It is also suggested that a commitment to be obtained from the students to continue to do well in their studies and help the needy when they can afford. Some take it granted that it is the fellow members problem to help them and this tendency may lead to misuse of funds Recently one Brahmin student with 90% marks managed to get into a reputed Engg Institute in Chennai , through some Influential Brahmin's recommendation. She paid only the required fees and no donation. The management used to charge Rs 6 lakhs for the course as donation. She was admitted much before the actual official counselling date. The parents used this influence out of anxiety of existing Quota situation. So please inform the students to do well in their studies (remind them about the poor Quota system) and try to get good grade and seek assistance in advance from members for admission or meeting expenses etc. So that the associations can channelise the available funds in much useful way. Some MNC executives (within India Abroad) with an intention to serve the needy, have kept a huge fund to support the needy students Please teach them Fishing give fishing nets early rather than feeding them. He is known to make copious notes about how every hour of his day passes. He jots down details in a tiny diary. Even if you speak to him on the phone for a few minutes, your name and details of the conversation go into that tiny diary, revealed a friend who has known the CEC for 20 years. So, the moment he decided to recommend Navin Chawla's [Images] removal from the post of election commissioner, Gopalaswami retreated into a one-of-its-kind library. It is more like a room where all these diaries, which he has kept labeled in serial order over a period of time, are strewn all over the place, the friend said. Gopalaswami turned to these diaries for factual accuracy. People close to the CEC that his keen eye for detail and habit of keeping meticulous notes led him to believe that Chawla was leaking information during his toilet breaks. That he drafted a 12-point recommendation running into more than 90 pages is a fact everyone knows. What many don't know is that he went over it again and again and again. He revised the draft nine times before forwarding it to President Pratibha Patil [Images], the friend said. What might appear extraordinary or eccentric to the casual observer is but second nature for Gopalaswami, who is fondly referred to as Gopu by some colleagues. An Indian Administrative Service officer from the 1966 batch, his first posting was in Surat [Images]. Gopalaswami, a former student of St Stephen's College, had stood second in the mandatory Gujarati test for officers from outside Gujarat. He worked to ensure the best possible civic infrastructure for the industrial town. He became so popular that local political leaders said he could easily win an election if he ever chose to contest. During his stint in Gujarat, senior leaders like Chimanbhai Patel and Hitendra Desai are known to have diverted their adversaries to Gopalaswami, knowing there was no better person at snubbing unwanted elements. When a local leader approached him with a bribe of Rs 5,000 early in his tenure, Gopalaswami first intimated the chief minister and then called the police. This kind of adherence to values has made him the person that he is today, people close to Gopalaswami say. If you go to his residence, he won't even offer you a glass of water. He may even eat in front of you without offering you anything, a close friend said. This attitude is more because of a give-nothing- take-nothing principle than anything else, insiders say. And friends say he could swallow what he dished out. A teetotaler with simple and clean eating habits, he is never known to have eaten a single meal outside his home. He had to attend so many dinner meetings. In the two decades or so that I have known him, I have never seen him eat outside, a friend said, adding, He will entertain you in the drawing room and may talk to you for two hours, but there won't be a single offer for any refreshments or even water. Gopalaswami follows his set of rules at the workplace too. He used to leave office at 9 pm. His brief to his office was that he wouldn't sign any papers between 8.30 pm and 9 pm. 'If a guy comes running to your car as you are leaving and wants something signed in a hurry, that is where corruption begins' was his motto, an observer said. Sources in the bureaucracy say that not just Gopalaswami, but two more officers from the 1966 IAS batch are cast in the same mould. They are a terror for other officers due to their upright nature: Gopalaswami, then Union Home Secretary P Shankar and Chief Vigilance Officer and Cabinet Secretary B K Chaturvedi. They were called the teen murtis, the source added. The first two are often clubbed together and dubbed as Gopu and Shanku -- that is also how they address each other. They have forged a very close relationship over the years and are still very close, he said. Apart from such professionalism, another thing that Gopalaswami wears on his sleeve is his faith. Though he sports the Iyengar sweecharnam (tilak), he leans more on the spiritual side than the religious side. He is a very secular person, said the friend about the staunch god-fearing Vaishnavaite. I happen to see quite a few death of near and dear ones and not so close ones. I witnessed something seriously going wrong with our community particularly the day a person funeral takes place. In my parents case my mother passed away in 2002 in Mumbai and my father in 2006 in Chennai. I could see the difference to some extent in the sense for my mother funeral many friends and relatives came to help and console me. But when my father passed away too many people came home but few turned out to the samshan ghat. I literally heard people saying your father is alive so you should not go with the body…may be true or may not be true. In the last few days I happened to go to two funerals and in both the funerals I found there were many persons who had come to witness the last rites but when the Sastrigals assistant told someone to lift the head of the dead body to tie some rope etc not a single sole went to help him….I without any hesitancy went near the body and did whatever the person told me to do…I am not for a moment pronouncing to myself to be great but I get a feeling something is going wrong somewhere…what is the point saying the person who died was good, noble , great person etc when we cannot touch the body when the family or your known people require that help…it was a rude shock that for the final rites at Besant Nagar and in Anna Nagar we had only 4 persons to carry the dead….one of the body was so heavy due to the body kept for few days in Mortuary due to family compulsion few of us had a herculean task to lift the body for the final rites…one of the person even commented that he had no experience…I felt terribly shocked that this in happening in our Iyer community to a large extent…. I really do not know whether my last two experiences is one of its kinds. I wish it is one of its kinds. Otherwise all I can say we may be a CEO of an organisation, we may be holding a top position, we may know the mantras and tantras..When the family and the community need help we need to do something about it…. I wish to state that others can narrate their experience. What bothers me in the midst of the funeral one of the gentlemen told me that He is a CEO of a well known organisation but when we needed someone to lift the body he was nowhere to be seen. On one hand we insist that all of us have to do their rites for their parents, forefathers etc but when we need real help today where are we going and what are we doing? We must remember that we too will die one day. Why are we taking life for granted…we can contribute to temples, we can have bhajans, and we can have many social gatherings…here is one issue we need to seriously look into…. I have no intention to hurt anyone…but this has been my experience when I compare myself with other communities. In the same Besant Nagar crematorium I saw other community people coming to do the last rites for their near and dear one in fact they had such a large gathering that I was really shocked…and I had no choice but to feel sorry for being an Iyer…at least that particular moment…. To further add on to this on 13th day ceremonies in both the cases I saw a large gathering. One can say people from outside came etc…but somehow that was not the case…most of them were from nearby place …..Rest you can write on….. Can some Brahmana Sangas/Samoohams/Tamil Nadu Brahmins/Mutts/VHP's take up this matter to some known IAS Officers/Secretaries or decision makers, so that poor Hindu students can also study further, avoiding drop-out throwing them out in the street to do some odd jobs.
