[tw] Re: Rename Tiddler links embedded in other tiddler texts

2018-03-03 Thread dg
I struggle with some of these concepts <https://youtu.be/SmHl7hKlVj4?t=30s> :-)
...so let me see if I get it.

The strategy is to pick a modest Tiddler title that stays permanent, and
then create a Caption that serves as a "display title"...such that when you
refer to [[short title]] in a Tiddler, the display is the "caption" and not
the "short title".

The "caption" can change as the content of the Tiddler changes and hence
you want to update the way you refer to the Tiddler to reflect the new
content.

I tried it and got the [[short title]] and "caption" part to work. I even
updated the "caption" in the source Tiddler and links in other Tiddlers I
created using [[short title]] reflected the change in the caption.

I never got the alias thing to work and don't really understand it...and
didn't really pursue the subtitle thing as I didn't think I needed to use
either of those at the moment.

I can see how this would work. As I think you pointed out, it's not really
as desirable as changing the Tiddler title directly. Because even though
your changing the displayed title, you now have to keep track of the fact
that the actual title and the displayed title are different.

I'll keep working at this and see how it goes. I my limited prior
experience with Wiki's I was using to collect reference data and notes
related to work, I found that building a knowledge repository was
evolutionary and I often wound up re-organizing material and morphing the
content and title of Wiki entries as my understanding of a topic changed
and the grouping of the knowledge contained changed also (e.g., splitting a
topic that had grown to have too many dimensions to adhere to the spirit of
a Tiddler).

I'm not sure how much of a problem this might be. I'll just have to work
with TiddlyWiki some more and see how it goes.

Thank you for you help!

[tw] Rename Tiddler links embedded in other tiddler texts

2018-03-02 Thread dg
I'm a newbie and only an occassional dabbler at TiddlyWiki, so please bear
with me.

I see that if I rename a Tiddler that TW conveniently offers to rename
entries in the Lists or Tags fields of other Tiddlers for me.

But if I've used the Tiddler name in the text of another Tiddler -- which I
do a lot -- those embedded links do not get updated.

There's probably some easy way around this, but please keep in mind I'm not
even sure how a TW plugin works or how to use them.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [tw] [TW5] Roadmap for TiddlyDesktop

2017-12-20 Thread dg
Jeremy,

Just a quick thank you -- sorry for being off topic -- to let you know that
this newbie is using TiddlyDesktop v0.9 and happily cutting my teeth on
Toddy Wiki with it. Thank you for all your great work on these tools!

A grateful, happy newbie,

[tw] Re: Home Sweet Home ... are TiddlyWikiDev & TiddlyWikiDocs worth keeping?

2017-09-10 Thread dg
I'm one of the "newbie's" referred to in this discussion. I know only a
smattering of HTML, even less CSS, and virtually nothing about
client/server or node.js, etc. I don't even know JavaScript (JS),
although I may learn since it's so pervasive. I have done simple
programming before in FORTRAN and VBA. I currently use Windows, but have
used Unix before.

I wished for a newbie group on TW. But I wonder if is whether there's
sufficient traffic to make it worthwhile. In fact, my main concern about
learning TW is that it seems a niche tool and I'm not sure of it's long
term prognosis.

My primary interest in TW is a personal notebook/knowledge-base. Commerial
Wiki's like http://www.wikidot.com/ <http://www.wikidot.com/>would be
perfect for me except data security at work prevents me from putting a lot
of my professional notes in the cloud. Password protected TW file local to
my encrypted hard drive is a viable solution.

To explain my wish for a newbie group, and concern that it might not work
for TW, please see the following:

   - I learned VIM years ago and, at that time, the very active
"vim-beginners" group was a great way to learn practical tips that
eventually changed my experience of VIM from a nightmare to a dream to use.
The more advanced VIM groups were way over my head and talked about things
I wasn't interested in (developing plugins, etc.)
   - The "vim-beginners" group was a much better way to learn VIM than
reading the manual. At that time, the manual was about the only way to
learn VIM. Recently, there's been a slew of books and web sites providing
lots of information about learning VIM. If I was learning today, the
"vim-beginners" group would not be the best way to learn.
   - Like the advanced VIM groups, this TW forum mostly talks about things
over my head and of no real interest to me. It's not a good way to learn TW.
   - Web searches on TW questions return a lot of dated material from TW
Classic, etc. It's not only hard to figure out what applies to TW5, it's
disconcerting to see all the really great tutorials and beginner material
on TW is 5-10 years old. Makes me wonder about the future of TW.

I hope my input is helpful to your decsion.

Thx!
