[tw] Re: How do or can i make my TW portable on a USB stick?

2009-08-03 Thread Anthony Muscio
Bit of a brain dump;

I recommend following the above advice but I do set my USB Drive letter on
every PC I use.

Also I open my tiddlywiki using a portable firefox (see portableapps.com),
so I take all my saved passwords, cookies and addons including the fantastic
tiddlysnip with me.

Under my tiddlywiki folder is;
WikiBackups (for the use of lessbackupsplugin)
http://ido-xp.tiddlyspot.com/#TrashPlugin
Trash (Where I occasionally export my trashed tiddlers) using

saveAs label:custom save as... ask
And Images/PDF and other folders for files I link to inside tiddlywiki using

If you have not found an easy way to do it with TiddlyWiki, you have missed
something.

Another advantage of using directories under the main Wiki directory,
if you need to copy/send/move the Wiki, you can just take the whole
directory and all of its contents. without worrying about losing any
 links.

I have my TW on my USB stick and if i map a path to an image for my

When i go to work with the same USB stick and plug it in my drive
 mapping is messed up.
This is because at home my USB is mapped as M:\  and at work it is
 mapped as E:\

So the path string below works fine is there a way to make it
'inversal' and ignore (or somehow not consider) the drive letter?

 file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/David/My%20Documents/MasterFolder
 [truncated for simplicity]

I had a similar problem using a USB hard drive to carry work between
home and office, using MS SyncToy as the syncing software. SyncToy
relies on having the same drive letter otherwise it doesn't work.

The solution there was for me to reassign the USB drive letter on one
of the computers so that it was the same on both computers (avoiding
the network drive letters as this can upset sensitive Systems folk).
Go into Computer Management (for me that is on StartAll
ProgramsAdministrative Tools) with the USB plugged in and reassign
the allocated drive letter in Disk Management.

It works for USB drives and I presume it will also work for
TiddlyWiki.

David

[tw] Re: How do or can i make my TW portable on a USB stick?

2009-08-02 Thread AlanBCohen

I use relative addressing to get to other files and simply do not
specify a drive letter in my links whenever possible. For example, I
use OneLevelUp/Wiki as my home directory and my main TW file is
'index.html'. I generally create subdirectories to hold any other
files that I need to link to. So, for example, a picture of my dog
(dog.jpg) would be in directory OneLevelUp/Wiki/Pictures/ . So my
link would be [[Doggy picture|Pictures/dog.jpg]] .
If I needed to refer to a file (GeorgeOfTheJungle.txt) in a directory
at the same level as Wiki ( OneLevelUp/Wiki and OneLevelUp/
Personal ), the link would be like [[Georgie|./Personal/
GeorgeOfTheJungle.txt]] .

This also has the advantage of the links working on any host computer
that supports hierarchical directory structures, like Windows, Mac,
and Linux (I use Linux at home, my wife has both Mac and Windows; the
drive works in any of them). Just keep in mind that unlike Windows,
most other operating systems are case sensitive.

I hope that helps,
Alan
