Well, I didn't get a manual with my receiver and I've never had it apart. I
was just assuming that it used standard newvistors. Assuming is always a
dangerous thing to do.

If you start with a square wave odd order is all you can get but if you
start with a pulse with a 25% duty cycle you can get even order. It's best
to optimize the pulse width for the harmonic you want.

The GR system did the same thing. There's wasn't sound proofed and really
made a whine. I had a NASA surplus one running in my office for about a
week when someone in the department needed a stable 1ms time reference. It
didn't take me long to build one with 7490s.

Ordinary car batteries are not tolerant of deep discharge. In a car they
get charged almost constantly and even after a cold morning start they
immediately get charged again. They are not designed for deep discharge and
if used in such a service will not last long.

Many times I have received shipments from well known electronics companies

get an FET to oscillate in a colpits configuration. You won't be able to
drive a 50 ohm load from an FET. A buffer of some kind will definitely be
needed.
