With Glass/Epoxy protoboards being so expensive, I have bought several lots of

will find plenty.  Also - I tend to do point-to-point wiring by soldering 30ga
kynar wire wrap wire to the pads. Silver plated - solders well...  I have an

Re: [time-nuts] Frequency generator and counter on same external reference

Good heavens, no.  By doing so, they both have the same reference and the
measuremets actually means something. I have a stack of HP stuff (3586, 3386
and assorted counters) all T'd off my Tbolt without issue.  The only caveat is
that you don't put too much stuff across the T-bolt output so as to load it
down to the point where some device can't get clocking. Before you hit that
point, you may need a high quality (low jitter) distribution amp in the timing

[time-nuts] DS-1 from 10MHz

2010-07-05 Thread Tom Clifton
I'm running more than a few days late on mail, but my inclination would be to
order a custom programmed SI5355 from Silicon Labs for $5 - no minimum quantity
and 2 week turnaround.  Admittedly the part is a qfn (SMT Quad Flat-pack
No-leads) but it is easy, can run off an external user provided reference
clock, and has reasonable jitter ('typically 50ps - not as good as an SI570 but
a whole lot better than an AD9851 DDS), and for a T1 clock should be perfectly
suitable.

From the Silabs page:

The Si5355 is a highly flexible clock generator capable of synthesizing four
completely non-integer related frequencies up to 200 MHz. The device has four
banks of outputs with each bank supporting two CMOS outputs at the same
frequency. Using Silicon Laboratories' patented MultiSynth fractional divider
technology, all outputs are guaranteed to have 0 ppm frequency synthesis error
regardless of configuration, enabling the replacement of multiple clock ICs and
crystal oscillators with a single device. Through a flexible web configuration
utility
called ClockBuilder™ (www.silabs.com/ClockBuilder), factory-customized
pincontrolled
Si5355 devices are available in two weeks without minimum order
quantity restrictions. The Si5355 supports up to three independent,
pin-selectable
device configurations, enabling one device to replace three separate clock ICs.

[time-nuts] The WWVB Atomic Clock Kit #7

2010-02-01 Thread Tom Clifton
I noted this while looking for a DDS VFO, and thought it interesting and
affordable if you are interested in a 60khz WWVB receiver kit  for $30 plus
postage.  As a standard disclaimer, I have no affiliation with the gents
producing  the kit.  The URL is:  http://www.qsl.net/k5bcq/Kits/Kits.html

And verbage from the site is as follows:

This not your father's WWVB clock. Many CW output features and even Westminster
chimes have been added. In fact we have 22 selectable parameters for those
who like pushing buttons. Since it is very difficult to maintain a 60Khz RF
link to WWVB during the day the Atomic Clock indicates when it was last synced
to WWVB. This will allow you to experiment with various VLF antennas to see
which is best. Antenna orientation is also important and you can experiment
there. I've been using some larger ferrite rods (off eBay) with great success.
Also tried some Litz wire antennas. Great fun.
The best way to describe all of it's features is to walk through the setup
process.
Power:

The Atomic Clock draws 0.22 mA running current, and 1.08 mA beeping current. To
reduce power consumption the microcontroller hunts for the correct WWVB signal
during the first 10 minutes of every hour. Two AA batteries should last a long
time.
Construction:

A diagram is located on the schematic page. Components on the back are shown in
mirror image.
Mount a 2pin header on the CMMR-6P-60 for antenna attachment and
experimentation. Remember this is “H” field, locate the ferrite rod away from
metal and at right angles to Ft Collins CO, WWVB for best reception….mostly in
the late evening and very early morning hours.
Use:

Step forward through the Modes by pushing the Mode button. Backup by holding in
the Mode button until you hear the first half second tick. You can repeat this.
If you hold the Mode button in for two half second ticks you go back to the
“clock”. All data is immediately stored in flash memory at the time you change
it. Clean display (no prefix) means you are “set” to WWVB, otherwise U,S,E,L is
displayed for Unsynced (no sync detected), Second sync detected (it requires
two good sync pulses before updating the time data with WWVB), Error (noise),
or Loss of any signal. The microcontroller wll attempt to detect WWVB and sync
up during the first 10 minutes of the hour (drawing ~1mA) it will then revert
to 0.22mA for the remaining 50 minutes whether synced or not to conserve the
battery. You can use #22 (below) to determine antenna effectiveness.
Modes/Parameters: Initial default is Clock shown as “HH – MM – SS” with; Offset

The price for the WWVB Atomic Clock Kit #7 (without the CMMR-6P-60) is $20 plus
$2 postage in the USA and $5 postage for DX. The CMMR-6P-60 is available for
$10 with no additional postage if ordered with the kit. We did that since
several local people already have this WWVB receiver and the other worldwide
time standards require different receivers and microcode (which is TBD).

Approaching off topic, but possibly of interest as Loran and WWVL is on the

I have several dead King KR-85 ADF untis that I want to  repair and press into
service as 505khz beacon monitors.  Designed primarily for receiving 200khz to
500khz non directional beacons, they came out of 1970's vintage private planes
and to date I have not been able to come up with a service manual with
schematics (short of paying $70 for a manual  at Esso Air). Is there any chance
that anybody out there may be able to assist with at least a partial copy of a
manual

These things are interesting - run on 12 volts, typicaly have an IF strip in
the 150kc range and have a digitally generated vfo that has a TTL divider
chain and a PLL for generating a sine wave.  BFO included!  And the front
end  on these things have pretty good input filters divided into three bands -
200khz-400khz, 400khz-800khz and 800khz-1600khz (Yup - covers the AM radio
band) to reduce intermod fro out of band stuff.  Conversion to 137 or 185khz
would be awkward, but theoreticaly should be possible, likewise conversion to
ham 160m, or down to 60khz or 100khz for other fun stuff.  They have a balanced
loop input as well as an unbalanced sense antenna - lots of  potential!

[time-nuts] 5070B once more.... (actually capacitors)

The word we got from our Dell National Accounts rep was that there was a run of

figure QC issues in a country still painting toys with lead based paint...

Any way, I recently purchased a pile of low ESR caps from Mouser to fix five
machines from the junk pile at work to build more linux utility boxes.
(perhaps $40) Turned out being a lot harder than I had anticipated as the
internal ground planes on the Dell Motherboards made the old caps dogs to
remove, and the new ones very hard to solder back in without cold joints.

After the first one, I returned the others to the pile and picked up other
machines with good motherboards and bad hard drives or power supplies to get
the rest of the machines I needed.

Guess I failed rework-101...

Re: [time-nuts] Thunderbolt temperature spikes

2008-07-14 Thread Tom Clifton
My own gut feeling is that it is a glitch making its way through one of the
power supplies. Its decay looks like it could be capacitive... Pr thermal.
or (fill in the blank)

I'm using the brick power supply povided and it is possible that they generate
transients, or poorly react to normal line garbage. I'm off for a week of
forced vacation (hernia repair - picked up too many boat anchors at
hamfests...) but plan to proceede with building linear supplies with battery
backup. Once I'm isolated from the mains the glitches will prove themselves by
their presence or absence.

If anybody out there has a red box Thunderbolt that runs off a single dc
supply - could you graph the temperature and see if you have similar spikes?
Also, I note that there is a Thunderrbolt E out there with a different
connector layout (has a BNC connector for the antenna input instead of an F
connector) and touts improved holdover times. On the off chance that anybody
has one of those, do they also suffer these glitches?

[time-nuts] Thunderbolt Loop Damping

2008-07-07 Thread Tom Clifton
The manual doesn't give much direction on tweaking the disciplining parameters.
Also, not having anything better to compare results to, I'm pretty
handicapped. Has anybody done any tweaking and perhaps can offer any
suggestions?

Over the weekend I was able to get a GPS antenna on the roof coupled to the
receiver in the basement by using an abandoned run of RG6 (Thanks Direct-TV! -
The ATT U-Verse doesn't fade during storms...) Logging of the 10mhz shows it
stays pretty much under 0.05ppb. The Excel graphs are easy to generate, but
not easy to use if that makes sense. Limited to 32k datapoints per graph and
very difficult to zoom in on.

Also, Is anybody else as confused as I am by negative ppb numbers??? is
0.00ppb the 10x-11 baseline so that -0.01ppb is really 0.009ppb?

[time-nuts] WinOncore

In any event, I have found plenty of documentation on

functional. Can someone help me out?

All I want to do is to be able to easily read the

getting good RS-232 isn't going to be an issue.

This has been a fascinating and educational thread! I
have always been aware of noise coming from switching
regulators - just have Argo or Speclab look at your
laptop's sound card with no input signal and there
is plenty to look at until you go to battery power.

I had never considered diode switching noise in linear
supplies, nor birdies from an assortment of logic
devices - though I am a believer in healthy
distribution of bypass capacitors...

Now if Sears only sold Diehard batteries that put out
3.3 volts...

The key is the gas tight connection between the
surfaces. If moisture and/or oxygen can't get in the
conection will remain true. Back in an earlier life
in the telecommunications industry connections went
from soldered to wire wrapped in the 70's. We were
all distrustful of a 'twisted on' connection until it
was explained to us. The proof was in the pudding (so
to say) when after a year or two statistical analysis
revealed that the post-install trouble rates plummeted
with the advent of wire wrap, but after 10 years
started creeping back up as the frame blocks reached
the end of their reliable life as circuits were
reterminated on those little square posts with the
less than perfectly square corners...

I perused the pdf manual and came up more confused

My problem seems to be in the Option 005 high
precision attenuator (as I can best tell). There is
an aluminum box between the circuit board and the
front panel 75 ohm, 135 ohm and 600 ohm outputs. That
mysterious 'box' seems to be open. I'm not sure if
it is just an impedence matching assembly, or if it
includes the option 005.

As the front panel level control is changed, the raw
50 ohm board output measures between +5 and -5 dbm and
every time the display crosses a -3dbm threshold (-3,
-13, -23 etc) you hear a relay click and the raw
output jumps back up 10db.

Hope that clarifies more than confuses...

The UPS man just delivered a care package from my
latest ebay purchase!!! I fired it up and found the
front panel displayed properly, but no output on the
75ohm BNC connector, but the rear panel 21-60mhz aux
works fine as mesured by a 5328a counter.

Pulled the bottom off and note that the 50 ohm output
into the matching box has good signal - problem in the
50/75/150/600 assembly.

Question - as I believe I only really 'care' about a
50 ohm output is there any reason not to use the raw
50 ohm output? At this time, I have no way of
measuring levels (3586 is a future purchase) so I have
no way of knowing how much the output levels are
dependent on the matching assembly and what
protections the matching assembly affords the output
of the generator.

Also - the 5328a has an undisciplined high stability
oscillator, and the 3336a doesn't. At 10mhz they agree
within .8hz +/- .5hz wandering around over the course
of an hour. Not too bad for $125 on eBay for the pair
of them (including shipping). Hope my luck holds...

[time-nuts] Lucent RFTG-M-XO reference question

2007-05-21 Thread Tom Clifton
Before I go and spend $150 on eBay for one - I would
like to know if they can be used as a stand-alone GPS
desciplined oscillator without the 10mhz input from
the rubidium unit.

Also - has anybody found a manual on-line for one of
these guys?

73 - Tom in St. Louis

There was an older posting from Oct 2005 describing
the RFG-M unit:

The board you are describing is used in the Lucent
RFG-M-XO reference frequency generator. It takes in 10
MHz on J2 from a Rubidium oscillator and disciplines
the Efratom SC cut OCXO on the main board from the 10
MHz input.

The output from the OCXO is converted to 15 MHz and
supplied as the reference output on J4.
The RFG-M-RB and RFG-M-XO normally mount together in a
chassis (which I didn 't get) and the modules are
connected to the chassis by a harness with a DB15 on
the chassis end. The pin out for the harness is as
follows:

DB15M TO/Pin# Description
Pin #
1RFG0 - P1-1+24v 1.3A/0.6A
2RFG0 - P1-2Common
3RFG1 - P1-1+24v 0.6A/0.4A
4RFG1 - P1-2Common
10 RFG0 - J3-1 Alarm
11 RFG0 - J3-2 Alarm
12 RFG1 - J3-1 Alarm
13 RFG1 - J3-2 Alarm

A second interface cable ties the RB to the XO as
follows:

RBJ5 XOJ5
Pin #Pin#
15
33

The male DB9 is P1 and pin 1 = +24v @ 400ma, Pin 2 =
Common. This will power
up the board so you can verify operation of the OCXO.
Unfortunately that is
all the information I have on the unit.
Hope this helps.
