Tomcat 5.5.10: APR-SSL doesn't work in chrooted UML

2005-08-09 Thread Markus Schönhaber
Hello!

I'm trying to run Tomcat 5.5.10 [1] on user mode linux which is started in a
chrooted environment but Tomcat hangs when initializing the SSL-Connector -
i. e. the message
org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11AprProtocol init
does never show up in the log. When I try to connect to the SSL-port the TCP
handshake is made but no data at all is transmitted.

Everything runs fine if:
- The UML-kernel is *not* started in a chroot environment. (!)
- APR is used but SSL is turned off (ex. the Connector has set the "SSLEngine"
config attribute to "off").
- APR isn't used at all.

I don't have the slightest idea why it should matter whether UML is started in
a chroot environment or not. To tell the truth, I don't have the slightest
idea whether it's a bug in Tomcat, APR, Tomcat's native binding to APR,
openssl, UML or if it's myself overlooking something absolutely obvious.

Any proposals what I could do to track this one down?

Regards
  mks

[1] In fact, it is a nightly build I made on August 6. - but the official
5.5.10 binary behaves identically.

System spec:
- Gentoo Linux on both host and guest.
- Host kernel: vanilla 2.6.12.4 with blaisorblade's skas-2.6.12-v8.2 patch.
- Guest kernel: vanilla 2.6.12.4 with blaisorblade's uml-2.6.12-bs9 patch.
- APR 1.1.1.
- OpenSSL 0.9.7e.

bugreports for commons-daemon

2005-08-09 Thread Longson, Robert
Hi,

I'm writing to the tomcat-dev list as I understand that commons-daemon
originated here. I've provided a number of bugreports, each with an associated
patch to commons-daemon over the last three months (and also one for tomcat)
but none of them have been applied.

Am I doing something wrong with bugzilla or is it just that there isn't a
committer who understands commons daemon actively looking at the commons-dev
list? If there are any tomcat developers willing to spend some time on
commons-daemon I would appreciate it very much.

Best regards

Robert Longson

Summary: jk 1.2.14 - Worker actions do not persist
   Product: Tomcat 4
   Version: 4.1.27
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: Windows Server 2003
Status: NEW
  Severity: critical
  Priority: P2
 Component: Unknown
AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was told by the jk connector component developer to open a new bug here. He
closed the one in his queue as works-for-him (see bug # 35901). So here goes...
=
Jk version in use is a 1.2.14 binary.

Scenario: open jkstatus in broswer click worker #1, check "Stopped" and "Update
Worker". Stat now shows stopped.

Open second browser. Navigate to the same jkstatus page. Worker
#1 stat is OK.

Both browsers are IE5 one located on my workstation, one the browser for a
server, so broswer cash should not be involved.

The same symptoms are seen in a single browser instance if you click worker #1
again, but not on a simple page refresh.

RE: bugreports for commons-daemon

2005-08-09 Thread Yoav Shapira
Howdy,
Commons-Daemon is fairly stagnant, as you've noticed. Mladen looks at it
every now and then, as do I, but it's a function of how busy we are with
other things ;) You can always build your own custom version if you need
something urgently... The patches will be evaluated when someone gets
around to them, which will hopefully be soon but can never be guaranteed.

It looks like the AJP protocol cannot stream request bodies of unknown length.
There are two cases where this might happen: for a chunked request body, or if
there are request input filters in use such as mod_deflate.

The correct thing to do here in mod_jk is:

 if (r->proto_input_filters != r->input_filters
 || apr_table_get(r->headers_in, "Transfer-Encoding")) {
/* refuse to handle the body */
 }

Does this mean mod_jk will simply not accept mod_deflate'd or chunked uploads?
If so, that would buy us nothing...

Re: patch: mod_jk load balance algorithm that accounts for current worker load

Please do so... There is also some overlap with Apache's
proxy load balancer as well, which I would want to fold
back in. For example, in Apache I added the bytraffic
method, which was then folded into mod_jk by Mladen.
So once "busyness" is added to mod_jk, I'll look on
adding it to the Apache tree.

The AJP protocol handles request bodies of unknown length perfectly well. It
doesn't handle rogue modules like mod_deflate lying to it.

So does this really mean that mod_deflate should simply not give a
content-length when it does not know it? That would seem (quite) reasonable
(and correct).

Ralph, I'am not sure if your question was addressed to me, but this bug should
definitly be fixed in the downloadable windows version, because of the missing
environment varaible. But this can be only done by the tomcat developers.
jakarta-tomcat-5.5.10.exe has this bug, but startup.bat in jakarta-tomcat-
5.5.10.tar.gz sets the variable, so its just an issue with the .exe

I am using apache with JBoss 3.2.5 (Tomcat 5.0.30).
After logging in I get a HTTP Status 400 - Invalid direct reference to form

It appears that the requestURI is null when it comes to
org.jboss.web.tomcat.tc4.authenticator.FormAuthenticator

Could you update the FormAuthenticator to look up the j_uri from the request
parameter when the saveRequestURI is null?
I'll appreciate the feedback.

Actually, "-ea" does not work even with the patch provided by Remy so I'm
reopening this issue. On a related note "-server" doesn't work either. Is this
one and the same issue or do I need to file a separate bug report?

This is INVALID simply for the reason that it's a commons-daemon problem, not
a Tomcat problem.

That having been said, it's even INVALID as a commons-daemon problem since
it's simply saying that your JVM version isn't supported. I'm just too lazy
to lookup the duplicate for a cite :).

On a related note, filing a bug for "-server" will politely get a response to
RTFM, and will be marked as INVALID.

William,

I am discussing the WinXP service configuration manager. I can't insert -server
into the startup script file as I would under Linux (because there no longer is
one under Windows).

I also ran a Google search for "server vm" across the online documentation and
found nothing useful there so please if this *is* documented somewhere I would
appreciate you pointing out where.

Nevermind, I just realized I need to change the "Java Virtual Machine" value
under the Java tab. All this time I was looking for an option of "client" or
"server" and it never occured to me I'd have to specify the full DLL path :)

Thanks anyway!
