RE: Why Use apache
This is a confusing part of Tomcat. You definitely do not need Apache to use Tomcat. It works great by itself (and is easier to use that way). You would add Apache into the mix for several reasons: * You want to do something other than Java - Perl, PHP, etc. * You are already running apache and you want to use Java * Apache is faster at serving static content (tuned for performance) and your site has a heavy amount of traffic for static content * You don't want to run Tomcat as root to be on port 80. You are concerned about security * You have a heavy load and want to have more than 1 Tomcat server i.e. load balancing multiple TC's behind Apache Mike. -- Mike Braden [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Skinner, Dallas M [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2001 10:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Why Use apache Excuse me if this question is obvious. RE: mod_jk on hp-ux - need help
Your best bet for success would be to re-build Apache. This will re-create the apxs script with the proper settings for your system and avoid problems like this if you update or use other apache modules. You can download the source for apache from the site and use this for a generic install (assumes apache source is in /usr/local/src): # cd /usr/local/src # gzip -dc apache_1.3.19.tar.gz|tar xvf - # cd apache_1.3.19 # ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache \ --enable-module=most \ --enable-shared=max # make # make install You should use gcc, the compiler included with HP-UX is just for building new kernels and doesn't include full support. If you are still having problems, post them. I can also send you a binary of mod_jk for HP-UX if you like. Use strict just tells perl to check the script's syntax and enforce strict rules. Not sure why you are getting that error. I used Perl 5.6.0 with my apache/mod_jk build OK. RE: mod_jk on Solaris 8
OK. Try this: # file `which cc` /usr/ucb/cc:executable /usr/bin/sh script Solaris 8 ships with a batch file called cc in /usr/ucb For a compiler, download the gcc package from http://www.sunfreeware.com as for make, you should check your path. Make is in /usr/cc/bin # which make /usr/ccs/bin/make If make is not located there, then you should check to see if the system was setup with the Entire Distribution or developers distribution options. If it was installed with only the base distribution (packages), then the libraries and utilities for compiling software will not be installed. Also note, you'll have much better luck building mod_jk if you build apache from source. There is a build script in the TC3.3m2 package for mod_jk that can be used with any TC3 version. RE: How can i create a login application
You may want to look at the O'Reilly JavaServer Pages Book, its a new book with current info in it (since things in the Java server world are changing quickly). There are some good examples of access control and form based login such as the one Mike Bryant is using with sample code. It goes over the same technique as well as one that uses a servlet as the control/check mechanism for logins. The technique that Mike is using works well, just remember to include the check in every restricted page. Mike, have you tried to do the check in something like a page header (like a title bar or something) that would have to be included in all pages? Also, since you are including a .jsp page, are you using it within other .jsp pages and .html pages? How do you keep from duplicating .jsp page directives or other script definitions? RE: Compatibility with different flavors of UNIX
mod_jk in TC3.2 has most of the build stuff for Linux, Win, and sort of Solaris. The scripts are not written for easy support of multiple platforms. You may want to look at TC3.3m2 or get the mod_jk from the TC3.3 nightly builds. Much has been added for better support of mod_jk in TC3.3, including new build files and instructions for HP-UX. mod_jk is not dependent on the version of TC that you are running, so you can build the mod_jk that comes with TC3.3m2 and use it on TC3.2. mod_jk is improving and will continue to do so. It would help to know the version of TC you have and the platform you are running it on - version, etc. The apache version would help also. You may want to look at the TC3.3m2 release. There is an updated mod_jk-howto in it. If you are running Linux, you can get the pre-built version of mod_jk in the same location as the TC3.3m1 or m2 binaries. The version of mod_jk is not dependant on the version of TC3. Also, sounds like your apache wasn't built with DSO support. The latest how-to offers suggestions with that. You need to make the oracle jdbc drivers avaiable in either the classpath or in the lib dir of the webapp you are using ( webapps/myapp/WEB-INF/lib ). I have been successful using the thin driver. RE: Use of mod_jserv.so
I'm pretty sure the mod_jserv for apache and the mod_jserv for Tomcat are different. For apache it works as a servlet container, while for Tomcat it is just a communication link. Download the Tomcat 3.3m1 release and use the mod_jk from it. It's located in native/mod_jk/apache1.3 Send any errors you get to the list for assistance in fixing problems. Make sure to make a note of the versions (OS, apache, tomcat, compiler). One thing that will help will be first building apache from source on your system. Apache's apxs is used to build mod_jk. It's values are setup from the build, which is why most binary distributions of apache have problems building mod_jk. You may also have better luck with gcc over a vendor compiler, but the reverse may be true for SGI. Mike. -- Mike Braden [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Bush, Craig R. I was able to get mod_jk built on an hpux 11 l-class using gcc. I wasn't able to get the dl stuff working (dlopen, dlclose, etc.). Configuration for mod_jk is used,mod_jk is loaded and working as I can see from the log file, mod_jk tries to find workers in workers.properties, but each request for virtual directories reserved to Tomcat never comes to the tomcat engine, as there is no communication on port 8009. Any hint would be helpful. Excuse me again and TIA. RE: Missing mod_jserve.so file?
It should be called mod_jserv.so, at least for Solaris and some OS's, the .so can be different. The file should be located in /usr/local/apache/libexec If it is not there, it is because your distribution does not contain it. Assuming you already have gcc, its not that hard to build. You need to download the Tomcat 3.2.1 source from http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.html The users guide has instructions for building it: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/jakarta-tomcat/src/doc/uguide/tomcat_ug.htm l Mike. -- Mike Braden [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Rick at canoffroad.net [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 06, 2001 8:10 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Missing mod_jserve.so file? RE: trouble with mod_jk
David, apxs is a perl script that is part of the apache distribution, which requires perl 5.003 (maybe 5.004) or greater. The biggest problem seems to be that apxs assumes that Apache was built on your system. If you installed apache from a binary distribution, you can run into problems because apxs pulls compiler options from the make file in apache. If this file was not built on your system, you can run into problems. Your best be it to install apache from the source. Its not hard to do at all and is available from http://httpd.apache.org/ Most boxes can use this to build apache: # ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-module=most --enable-shared=max # make # make install The other thing to do is to clean up all of the .o and .so files that are part of mod_jk. If they are there from a build another system, they may not be supported by your box. The easiest way to determine that is to use file: # file mod_jserv.so mod_jserv.so: ELF 32-bit MSB dynamic lib SPARC Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped This shows that this library is the correct type form system ( a SPARC box ). I've seen problems with builds including bins for linux, which show up as x86 code. RE: TOMCAT/Apache jk
Nadia, I'm not sure about Digital Unix, but the first line should be the library file, which is usually a shared object library (Sun=.so, HPUX=.sl) i.e. LoadModule jk_module libexec/mod_jk.so LoadModule jk_module libexec/mod_jk.c AddModulemod_jk.c Also, make sure that mod_jk is built for your system. Did you compile mod_jk or get the binary from somewhere? Check /usr/local/libexec to make sure the object file is there and that it is the correct type. # file /usr/local/libexec/mod_status.so /usr/local/libexec/mod_status.so: ELF 32-bit LSB dynamic lib 80386 Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped Make sure the file type reported back matches other libraries on your system (the architecture is the same). RE: Apache to Tomcat Connector Problem
John, Make sure that you clean out all of the .o files before you build. You can run a make clean to remove the files from the apache-1.3 dir, but I believe it also uses .o files from webapplib dir. You'll have to remove them manually because I don't think there is a clean in that Makefile. The easiest way to tell if the files are OK is to do a file on them: # file mod_webapp.so mod_webapp.so: ELF 32-bit LSB dynamic lib 80386 Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped This was the problem with running it on my sparc box.
