Rate decent. Activity moderate during the evening hours I was on. Did
work KH6, PJ2T and ZF. Not so much into 6/7/0 land.

QRN was an issue.

Jumped in around 0300z but heard no EU.

Tried again pre SR 0900z but that was a slow go.

Finished with 110 Qs in 3 hrs with 76 unique GS's. in 5 dx entities.

Next time, need to get in there at the start.

Steve,
Here in Virginia although I made a few European contacts around 0300 the
band didn't really open until their sunrise grayline around 0400 and was
best for me around 0500. I only managed around 30 Europeans this year
compared to 70 in Spring 2020 Stew. I share your observation about the
level of activity but not the condition of the band. Lots of static and
QSB made it much harder to get the 30 Europeans than the 70 in 2020!

I heard very few east coasters working Europe early last evening. OTOH,
we seemed to have great propagation between SoCal and all along the
upper east coast; I was hearing and working whatever I could hear as
much as 15 minutes BEFORE sunset from the desert, including FK09, FN64
and FN20! At that time (0145 - ~03Z), I heard only a few other
westerners; it was as though most the other W6s were waiting until after
dark before getting on. Static crashes? What static?? The band seemed
abnormally quiet, to me. Unfortunately, I had to go away after 0430Z.

But my impression was that activity was WAY down; there were kHz between
CQers, so no adjacent CQing QRM that I heard, and NO activity above 1840
(at least, not until after 0430Z, when I left), and almost none below 1810.

I missed the most active SP evening hours, but somewhere around 2 am I
remembered the SP so came into the shack. Nice quiet cndx. Good sigs
from VE7- W6, W7 land and a handful of Carrib dx + KH6. No euros or SA

2 hrs of sleep and operated til around 7:30am Ohio time.

Noticed as SR approached the QRN really began to pick up, so I pulled

Topband: Stew Perry surprise EU opening

2023-12-31 Thread ve...@shaw.ca
Since mid September I have been dealing with a powerline noise issue here at
VE6WZ.
The good news is that together with the power company we have identified the
problem pole, and they even made a video of visible arcing.
The bad news is that it has still not been repaired even though there is a work
order for the job.

The noise source is about 2 km south of me, and makes South, SW and SE rx very
difficult.
Therefore, I decided not to participate in the SP contest since I would have
been an alligator to most of USA.

However, last night before starting a movie with the xyl, I scanned the band
and decided to give out a few QSOs using low power.
Ron N4XD had no trouble hearing my 60w check-in.

I was just going to QSY to the TV but decided to check my RBN skimmer. I was
surprised to see I was decoding YL3FT.
I was sure it was a false spot, but sure enough Yuris was CQ test with a solid
signal. I turned on the Acom and waited (what seemed like forever) for the amp
to warm up, and YL3FT was in the log with just one call.
Then I noticed Andy DL8LAS at DR5X was hitting my skimmer, so I QSY'd and he
came back after 2 calls. We exchanged reports, and personal HNY greetings.

I heard no other EU with a quick band scan, so I left the radio to watch a
movie.
I checked the radio before bed around 500z but heard no other EU. I do wonder
how many EU I might have been able to work if I was CQ for a while?

This morning I got to the radio about 40min before 1500z and logged JA3YBK and
JA5DQH. No VK or ZL heard for the short time I was QRV.

In total only 7 QSOs during my short 1 hour or so of search and ponce while
checking condx.

Topband: Stew Perry/Lowband Jack from VK6VZ

2023-10-23 Thread Steve Ireland
G’day

Been leaving 160m mostly here to Kev VK6LW and Phil VK6GX, while I operate on
“VHF”, as Phil calls 10m.

However, I try not too miss a Stew Perry and the fall LBJ is normally an
excellent one here in terms of propagation.

I got out of bed and CQed and listened to noise for a couple of hours from
1530Z (hoping to catch European sunset prop), then dozed for a couple of hours
and came back on an hour before VK6 sunrise and CQed and listened to noise
until the sun came up.

I am ashamed to admit that was so discouraged and sleepy that I watched a crime
drama on TV in the evening instead of catching the North American sunrise. 

Think it is the first SP ever for me when I have been on and not made a single
contact. Guess that is sunspots for yer. Back to ‘ten’ for me.

Hope someone somewhere did a lot better!

That was a really attenuated contest.

VE3MGY was weak all night. Except VE3MGY is *never *weak here unless the
sun hasn't gone down. Best proof of a weird, attenuated night. I only
worked 5 VE's, none of them loud, and normally work 20+, even in summer at
least in high teens. Not this year

Never managed to copy a European, much less work one. I did a couple of
times hear a station calling me that had "5K" in the call sign. So far in
Tree's listing PA5KT and EI5KF are the only call signs with a "5K" in
them. Probably was Gerald. Path to him would have least amount of sunlight,
farthest west.

Worked ONE USA west coast, K7RAT, also my longest QSO. Struggle to work
anything west of Mississippi.

About half my QSO's needed repeats. Sorry about that.

QSB was deep and fast, seemingly on everything past 500 miles or so. QRN
was awful and coming from every direction.

Definitely weird. Wonder if this will be the way of summer Topband until
the sunspots go down again.

Re: Topband: Stew Perry Topband Challenge

2023-06-19 Thread Don Kirk
It started off OK here near Indianapolis but as darkness moved West from
here the QRN went way up from the Thunderstorms centered above KS, OK, and
AR. As an example my noise floor when beaming West using my 300 degree
pointed pennant RX antenna was peaking 24 dB above my normal noise floor
most of the time due to the Thunderstorms. My 40 degree pointed pennant
really knocked down the QRN from the Thunderstorms out West which helped me
hear the East coast stations. Big Thunderstorms were also located above FL
and my noise floor listening South using my 160 degree pointed pennant was
also much higher than normal.

I stayed up until European SR and went to bed at 0445 UTC, and then jumped
back on for a few minutes at 0926 UTC to put 3 more stations in the log
before calling it quits. I heard nothing out of Europe.

I personally thought it was brutal but my QSO numbers maybe indicat it was
not as bad as I felt it was. Big thanks to K7RAT and K7QA for the only
high QSO points besides QRP stations that I was able to obtain using my
little 100 watt station.

Re: Topband: Stew Perry Topband Challenge

2023-06-19 Thread Tree
This summer stew was interesting from Oregon. The band was surprisingly
quiet - especially in the morning.

Sunset was at 0405 UTC. I could hear a handful of stations to the East
just before sunset, but none of them could hear me. W9RE was the first
station other than "locals" at 0402. I didn't realize he was running low
power. Typically the QSOs started with me calling a few times and I would
get a question mark, then eventually they would piece my call together.
KZ5D had a good signal, but got away before I could work him.

However, this was pretty late on the East Coast and many stations were
going QRT. I heard perhaps a dozen stations that could not hear me before
they went QRT and I never heard them again.

Around 0530 UTC, I sensed that EVERYONE out East had gone to bed, The band
was empty and there really were very few USA West Coast stations active.
This felt like a good time to get a few hours sleep. I got back on the
band at 0841 and worked a handful of East Coast stations near their sunrise
(K3UL, KM1R, AA1K, K9WX, WT9Q, N3BB) and that was it. But for summertime,
it was much better than nothing.

After 1004 UTC, I only worked stations on the West Coast - or DX to the
West. JA3YBK showed up with a good signal working the AA contest. They
called me and we had some difficulty getting the exchanges worked out as
they were looking for my age and I was looking for their grid square. They
thought I was 85 years old for a minute or two. They were a beacon on the
band until my sunrise. JA9FHB called in with a grid square which was very
nice.

Then VK3QB started calling CQ DX around 1110 UTC. KL7KY and I were
answering him, but he couldn't hear either one of us. Eventually,
conditions improved and I was able to get his attention. Took some work to
get him to send a grid square however. After almost a half hour of nothing
in the log - VK3HJ shows up with a pretty good signal for my second VK
QSO. They are worth 26 and 27 points. I watched HJ and QB work each other
on my bandscope. They both had good signals and for a while, VK3QB had a
steady signal up to my sunrise.

I had worked Phil, VK6GX in the Spring Stew and was keeping an ear out for
him and he finally called me at 1202 UTC foor my last QSO. Turns out, I
was his only QSO. A nice 30 point adder to the score. Finally pulled the
plug around 1225 UTC and went back to bed.

This actually was a pretty good result for me in the Summer Stew. I am
pleased to see how many times K7RAT shows up in the listing as the best
DX. It really felt like I was in my own world as there were very few other
stations from the West Coast - especially in the morning. I installed my
new phasing box for the HiZ array (a single box instead of the two that I
had before) and it seemed to work very well. Was using diversity the whole
time with the HiZ in one each and a Beverage in the other (either pointing
N/S or East or West). The K4D continues to be very easy on the ears.

Great to hear all of the activity. Hope to see everyone in October.

I'm sure George knows this, but for others reading the mail, on all of

peak on the daylight side of the terminator. On 160M, it's 30-40

One of the most common dumb things that expeditions to is move to higher

Topband: Stew Perry coming in 11 days

2022-12-06 Thread Tree
Due to the timing of New Year's Eve, the Stew Perry will move up to the
weekend before the holidays this year. That would be on December 17/18th.

We understand that this is a bad time for some people - and perhaps a
better time for some others. Most of the time, the contest ends up being
on the weekend between XMAS and New Year's, but this is the one exception.

As you all know, this contest features a robust menu of plaques. Without
much prodding at all, we already have nearly a full set of plaques
sponsored. You can find the list here:

Stew Perry TBDC Plaques (kkn.net)

If you were waiting for an announcement before sponsoring your plaque of
choice - consider this that announcement. Please send me an email with the
info on the plaque you want to sponsor. Payment is best via PayPal to this
email address (t...@kkn.net). The current price is $65.

The Boring Amateur Radio Club would like to thank Patrick, W7TMT, who is
helping with shipping last year's plaques. These should be arriving in the
next couple of weeks.

Topband: Stew Perry Contest on East Coast of VK

2022-10-25 Thread vk3io

Hello Top Band Contesters.

Conditions here on East Coast of VK were terrible.

Mega lightning throughout the east coast. Very unseasonable weather for
this time of year.

Many of the possible Topband contesters (of which there are not many in
VK) were probably recovering from storm damage and or flooding and were
either unavailable or had everything disconnected.

For me, it was not so bad at or before my sunrise.

I got on at 1715utc and head nothing, except R3OM, who did not hear me.

I went back to sleep.

Woke up a bit late, just before my sun rise at 1915utc, but only heard
DR5X, who had a reasonable signal, but who did not hear me, probably
because he was using a beverage rx antenna not in my direction. DU7ET
was calling CQ DX almost on the same frequency, so that made it
difficult. I don't think Bob was in the contest, but we exchanged
reports and I logged him anyway.

I called LY7M, who had a good signal at 1920utc and we had an easy
contest exchange.

So I then called CQ Contest on 1824.5 and got a reply from DR5X at
1930utc who at this time was a stronger signal and then G3OQT, who was
not so strong but we made a qso at 1933utc.

I think the path to Europe was only open for a short time, as after
1940utc I did not hear anyone. Typical for this time of October.

During our sunrise time I did not hear any other VK on cw on the band.

During our evening, the QRN on the east coast was terrible and I had
only one contest exchange with vk6vz.

The VK6's were managing some qso's with USA, but for me it was impossible.

So only 5 qso's for me in total, so I disconnected everything and that
was it for me, until next time.

Cheers, from Ron. vk3io.

YES! I often find that I can work the better expeditions QRP after the
initial rush has died down, even on Topband.

Where this breaks down is when expeditions QSY from lower bands at the

There had been useful receivers at Key West, FL and in the Dominican Republic

The "Low Band Jack" version of the Stew Perry contest will be held this

This is one of four Stew Perry events held throughout the year and provide
a stress-free evening of fun on the band filled with CW signals.

The exchange is your four-digit grid square, and you get (and give) more
the number of points you get for the QSO increase by its distance.

at 0800Z and he had a nice little SR run of UK stations starting with you:
G3YRO, G4DJX, MM1R, G3T, GM4ZUK, G4FAL, GM4JYB, GI4EBS. There is a picture
of the 8-Circle on our NA7TB QRZ page. This is the antenna Milt Jensen,
N5IA (SK) constructed over 5 years ago before his tower accident. We will
be looking for you next month in the CQ 160 contest.

Hi Hank - just checked the Log - yes it was NA7TB !
I'm amazed how I manage to do with my modest setup, compared to what a lot
of you guys in the US have for Top Band.
And I don't think anyone here in Britain has a 4-Square for 160m.

PS - I keep replying direct to emails from people on here, but for some
reason your servers are rejecting my emails (it says my email i.p. address

I wonder if the AZ was NA7TB with an 8 circle TX - beverages and legal limit

Conditions were OK but not good to Europe over the weekend. The big signals
that are normally over S9 were only around S7.

Unfortunately I had to work until 3am on Saturday night/Sunday morning . . .
and as I had to be up at 8am I could only afford to come on 160 for about an

However, I did manage to work 38 NA contest stations in that time, so was

Re: Topband: Stew Perry 160 meter test this weekend

2021-12-15 Thread Richard Karlquist
My Alpha 9500 is out being repaired, so I will be operating low power in
the SP this weekend. Which of course means additional points for both
ends of the QSO. Might be worth trying to pull my signal out of the
noise if you hear me. I did pretty well in the ARRL 160 working the
east coast with low power. There was a fairly large variation of the
ability of east coast stations to hear me. Some stations just hear a
lot better than others in similar locations. I don't know how much is
the station and how much is the op. However, the band doesn't really
open up here (west coast) until around 0200Z. Before that, we get the
dreaded 1 way propagation with the east coast. Don't go QRT too early.

Good luck. CU in the contest.

Topband: Stew Perry 160 meter test this weekend

2021-12-15 Thread Tree
All -

The annual Stew Perry 160 meter Distance Challenge is coming up this
weekend. It starts at 1500Z on Dec 18th and runs for 24 hours. The
exchange is your grid square and the points you get are proportional to the
distance of the contact. Full rules and other information available at
www.kkn.net/stew.

As usual - many of you have stepped forward to sponsor a plaque for this
unique event.

We have plaques for the Top Scores from many geographical areas:

High Power Single-Op World, Europe, Africa, SE Asia
CQ Zones 3, 22, 24, 25, 26-28
USA 5th call area
Within 15 degrees of the equator

There are also plaques for those using temporary antennas, a very lousy
antenna or various sizes of small lots.

Some of the stranger plaques include an award to the highest score only
using search and pounce, highest # of QSOs with no busts, use of a vintage
station, daytime only operation and one for the highest score from a
first-time entrant.

If you feel a plaque should be added to the list, there is still time to
make your intentions known. Send me a direct email and we will work out
the details. The plaques for the previous event will be shipping in the
next week or two. We apologize for the delay.

Hope to work many of you this weekend in one of the most enjoyable evenings
you will have on the Topband.

Of the 3 Caribbean at least 1 was still copieable 1 hour after my sunrise.

An hour later it went better, but mostly east coast.

Best distance to USA was 15 points, best to the east was 8 points.

Yes, I'm quite sure Stan was joking!

On a serious note though, I was very pleased to work Stan last night. I was
just about to turn off the radio, as the widespread thunderstorms continued
to smash my receiver, when I saw Stan's CQ. Tuning to that frequency, I
quickly determined the callsign, and I called. It was nice to make the QSO
with Stan. I also heard the JA and HL stations calling, but they were
difficult copy here.

ZF9CW is always a standout signal from the Caribbean. The other one was the
late Herb KV4FZ. These two always seem to hear DX from this direction well.

Electric utilities used to use (ca 1980s) something called power-on nozzles
or similar spelling to extinguish fires at energized substations. These
nozzles were kept inside the stations hung on the chain link fence in
specifically identified boxes for FD use. The nozzles broke up the water
stream into individual droplets so there was never a continuous stream
connecting the FD members and the possibly energized equipment.

I presume Stan was only joking.

Topband: Stew Perry Contest

2020-12-28 Thread Stan Stockton
The Stew Perry Contest should be the standard for log processing. Also,
unlike every other contest I have never seen anyone complain about the
scoring not being fair.

I have not worked the contest every year and I had forgotten how the logs
are processed. I just submitted my log and then looked at the preliminary
results.

Apparently, perhaps once a day or so the logs are checked against all the
other logs that have been submitted and the results are shown as of that
moment in time. In this particular contest you receive bonus points for
working low power and QRP stations and so the scores change based on the
logs that have been received since the last update. The station at the top
of the list, NP2J, score is already a thousand points higher than what he
claimed on 3830.

Compare this process to every other contest where you submit your log and
perhaps even forgot you worked the contest at all before the results are
published many months later.

Regarding the Stew, I have never had a low noise situation here before this
weekend. A couple of days before the contest it rained hard and high wind
blew in some really cold air. It was about 70 degrees and 30 MPH wind.
The noise went down a lot - like it was only about S5 as compared to the
normal S8-9. I was able to work over 200 Europeans, a couple of JAs, VK,
ZL, etc.

I can see myself with my thumb over the end of a water hose before the CQ
160 Contest trying to spray water on power line insulators!

This morning I got on for a few minutes to try to work DS1JFY who thought
he had worked me via long path at my start (sunset) of the SP Contest (not
a chance of that from this location on the island). He wanted a schedule.
I got on about 10 minutes before sunrise and worked VK3HJ, JA0MVW, HL5IVL,
DS1JFY and JA5DQH. I had stopped about sunrise and was reading my email
with the headphones still on and heard someone send "Stan". A couple of
question marks and Aki identified himself. He had the best signal of all
of them.

Happy New Year to everyone and may you too have noise reducing rain in the
new year.

But still the process has begun !

The first one in my magazine was W1UE.

Many signals were very weak + QSB, QSB ..

Topband: Stew Perry from VK3

2020-12-27 Thread vk3io
As Luke VK3HJ has stated, the QRN was bad here in VK3 and probably all
over VK, including at VK6LW, I expect.

But I pushed through the QRN pain barrier and even called CQ test a few
times, but no replies, not even from locals or ZL's.

So I ended up only calling any strong signals heard and accepted that
even though they may be strong, they might not be listening for my
direction, which was probably the case with JA4UYB.

Northern Europe did come good, but not until right at my sun rise time
(1856utc) and surprisingly continued good until about 30 minutes after.
Maybe that was because of my "Low Dipole" , being only 100 fth and
things might have been better or worse if I had a good vertical.

Nothing even heard from southern or western Europe, which includes the UK.

Only the Ukraine, USSR  and Lithuania. How odd.

Both RD4F and UD4F were strong and about the same strength and that
caused me some confusion in the QRN. Did I get UD4F call correct, yes or
no? So I wasted some time to clear that up.

ZF9CW was good and strong at 1130utc, like in the CQ WW DX Contest, when
he obviously pointed his antenna my way. He must have a great
directional antenna system and heard me first call.

There were only a few strong signals from North America and that was
only after 1220utc (no sun set peak here anytime this year, as far as I
have noticed), which is getting late here, being 11.30pm local and with
all the banging and crashing, up to 9+30dB, with the S meter never going
less than 9, that no doubt would continue all night, I gave up and went
to bed.

Maybe there was a peak in signal strength to USA later, after 1230utc,
like what seems to be the trend of recent times, but it was not worth
taking a chance on.

Last year was much better and this year would have been good, if we had
lower or no QRN.

Never-the-less, I look forward to the next contest, like the CQ WW 160m
CW at the end of January and then SSB at the end of February, when our
QRN levels usually are less.

Cheers, from Ron.

2020-12-27 Thread Henk Remijn PA5KT via Topband

Conditions were marginal.

I only worked the regulars which I work all year round also during solar
maximum.

NA only east coast, to Texas and Carribean, but nothing above that line.

To the east I heard some JA but not strong enough to make a QSO. HL5IVL
had a big pile up but I did not try.

13 points to Asia was best Dx to the east, 16 points best distance to
the west.

Hopefully the CQ 160 will be better.

Re: Topband: Stew Perry

2020-12-27 Thread Greg - ZL3IX
I agree with Luke. Condx around Australasia were worse than mediocre. I
didn't hear any VK6s and only a couple of JAs in the first session.
JA4UYB was quite good on peaks of deep QSB, but he never heard me. Only
LY7Z from Eu and he kept CQing right through me.

In the second session stations from NA were few and far between, and I
only put a handful into the log. I must say that just about everyone I
called in NA did hear me. Long path to the UK was also mediocre with
only GW5R and G3OLB being heard. The GW never copied my call but I did
manage a Q with Tom.

Topband: Stew Perry Conditions

2020-12-27 Thread Roger Kennedy

Well conditions weren't particularly good . . . but they were OK.

I came on for about an hour from 0100Z, and for another hour at 0500Z.

Managed to work a total of 56 NA stations, including across to Louisiana,
Texas, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

I was generally pretty pleased with how I was getting out, as most stations
came back first call, and I worked every DX station I heard.

Re: Topband: Stew Perry

2020-12-27 Thread Wes
I just dabbled in the test.  I've recently replaced the K3S with a TS-890 and am
still learning the ropes.  After working flawlessly for a couple of weeks I had
a newly developed interface problem with the Elecraft KPA500 tuner, which
naturally popped up during the test.

I thought condx were generally good, with lots of big signals from stations
which didn't hear me.  As I mentioned in the "low dipole" thread, even without
the low-noise RX antenna that is commonly deemed necessary, I almost have parity
between TX and RX, except my RX is often better than TX.  Go figure.  Cases in
point, JE1CKA seemed to have a robot sending CQ test, without ever listening and
JA5DQH was working other JAs as his signal was peaking just past my sunrise,
when the test ended. Neither of them copied me, even though we have worked
several times before.

If you're running a 6L6 tied to the gutter (i.e., QRP) please know

may take some considerable patience on both our parts. Please, please
don't be feel bad or be hesitant about sending your call multiple

it.  There are quite a few of us with multiple tools in the arsenal to
receive your weak signal.  Going through variations of multiple
receive antennas and multiple directions trying to pull you through
takes some time.  If I have to resort to using the APF (with a few
cycles, er Hz, bandwidth) that takes additional time and complicates
things further.   If a QSO can't be made please try later. . .
conditions change.  On a different matter, I'm sure it's frustrating
to be a DX station relative to NA.  I and others DO want to work you
and will do our best.  I try to stop, listen, and call specifically
for DX on the hour and half hour.  After working a DX station I often
find another is waiting next in line to call me so I'll listen for
additional DX stations giving them priority for a  Q. . . NA can wait
a bit.

This is a really enjoyable contest. . . let's get on and have fun in

Topband: Stew Perry Plaques

2020-12-14 Thread Tree
Greetings to Contesters all around the world,

The Boring Amateur Radio Club is pleased to announce yet another epic
edition of The Stew. The winter running of The Big Stew will start at
1500Z on Dec. 26, 2020 and end 23 hours and 59 minutes later. Please
transport yourself via computer to https://www.kkn.net/stew/ where
you will find a treasure trove of information about this CW radio energy
contest that lives on 160M, which is a frequency near you.

The Stew Perry Top Band Distance Challenge is an old fashioned radio
contest where the emphasis is on what your ears hear and where that big
radio knob takes you rather than damaging your clicking finger where
multiple callers zero beat each other to a frenzied numbness. Yes,
utilizing packet and spotting and obtaining aid outside of your own self is
against the rules. Go to the website mentioned above and read the rules,
especially rule #6.

Another feature of The Stew is that it utilizes the fairest scoring
system in all of radio contesting. The score rewards you with more points
if you work somebody very far away as compared to different countries or
prefixes. The Stew is a Distance contest not just a country counting or
state counting contest like so many of the other lesser contests. The
brilliant rules also multiply each contact's value if you work a low power
station or even a QRP station, which do venture out on the band on dark and
stormy contest nights, like Dec. 26, just to see if you can work them.

Plaques are sponsored and awarded for various feats of radio
accomplishments. The Boring Amateur Radio Club does not originate the
plaque categories. Those categories come from the radio combatants
themselves. These Stalwarts propose a category and then back that up with
$65 American dollars to sponsor their plaque for somebody to aspire to
win. A list of sponsored plaques lives at the website I've mentioned.
Email me at the address below if your curiosity is piqued and you desire to
sponsor a plaque.

You have about two weeks to get your 160M station in order so you can
play in The Stew. If you think your code is marginal for any reason just
go above 1850 and call CQ at a speed you can copy. Most pouncing Operators
will QRS and work you. The Stew is a friendly contest where the exchange is
simply your callsign and your Maidenhead grid square. Signal reports are
optional but some Operators use them as a preparatory sequence for the
coming 4 digit grid square.

If you have questions motor on over to The Stew website and snoop
around. If you can’t find the answer then you are probably intoxicated and
should try again after a short period of time. If you still can’t find the
answer send the question to the email address below.

The Boring Amateur Radio Club predicts that this year’s Running of the
Grids will be a memorable one due to conditions, karma and Covid
cloistering. We will look for you in The Stew!

  73 and I remain,

  Lew w7ew w...@arrl.net

Topband: Stew Perry at VE6WZ

2020-10-18 Thread VE6WZ_Steve
As Tree said the condx were pretty good this Saturday for the Lowband Jack
version of the Stew contest.

The trans-polar EU path was very steady throughout the evening.

I managed to log 71 EU which I think is a one-night record for me on 160m.
Last week I worked 51 EU one evening, but I think the contest brought out some
new calls. There were a few “never worked before on 160” callsigns.
Unlike Tree I didn't notice the EU path at my morning, but perhaps thats
because I was mostly RX to Asia and OC. I did work Vlad RA4LW Saturday evening.
Worked 12 JA and one HL.
It sure was great to hear Kevin VK6LW call in this morning. He needed some
repeats for my grid and said he had bad QRN.
Thanks to all my friends in EU that gave me a call. It was nice to hear those
familiar calls!

Topband: Stew Perry from K7RAT

2020-10-18 Thread Tree
Wow!! This was a lot of fun.

Always nice to see the band scope filled up with CW signals from 1810 to
1839. I didn't see anyone up above the FT8 signals, but there might have
been some.

The band seemed very quiet - and I could hear really well, although signals
were not really strong. LY7M was good copy 90 minutes before sunset -
which is something I would expect in December. Managed about 12 QSOs with
Europe - mostly Northern. RX3APM was maybe the strongest although SM5EDX
was a consistent signal for at least an hour. The big surprise from Europe
came this morning - where I worked UA4HBW and RA4LW about an hour before
sunrise. This is another thing that you typically don't see until December
and only during low sunspot years. Their signals were coming in from the
North.

Had a good sunrise peak to VK6 and worked two of them. Nothing else from
South of the equator. Nice to add about a dozen JAs.

Topband: Stew Perry Four Season Plaque

2020-06-20 Thread Tree
All -

The Boring ARC just put the finishing touches on a new award that might be
of interest. It will be given to the highest scoring single-op entrant who
operates all four of the Stews (Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter).

While this year is just a test run, you might want to make sure you stay
eligible for the test-run-score listing by making sure you submit an entry
for this event.

Details about this award can be found here:

https://www.kkn.net/stew/stew_mfs.html

See you on the noisy bands later.

Re: Topband: Stew Perry Contest

Hi

I heard you Roger.

But did not distract you from your beloved CQ dx TEST :-))

Almost all of my NA correspondents are old acquaintances.

There are only two new ones - N4BAA, AA2EQ.

There was one QSO with the third zone - K7RL ( It has wonderful TX +
RX).

Also, many from the USA heard me well.

Only a few stations did not answer me.

Five times I tried to call NN7CW.
Lost about 30 minutes .
And now everything is clear..

But overall a great contest !

Yes, great to see conditions being good this weekend for the Contest.
The
big NA signals were peaking S9 +10 to 15dB over here (which what they
always

used to be, but I haven't seen for a while)

I came on for a couple of hours on Saturday night, and managed to work
45 NA

stations, including several Caribbeans.

It's just a shame that you never hear most of these stations on 160 the
rest

of the time !
