Re: [TOS] RIT is setting up an OSPO!

2021-09-25 Thread Shobha Tyagi
Hi! Dear Heidi and Chris,

It is absolutely a fantastic initiative. I have carefully read all the
shared articles and material.
They are extremely informative and inspirational. I also dreamt of opening
such a program at my university in India.
I have a FOSS developer group here. They recently participated in the
GitLab hackathon and Learned how to contribute.
We also organized openSUSE.Asia virtual summit 2021 this year in the
online mode.
I need guidance and support to make my students participate in research and
contribute to OS humanitarian/projects.
Students have lots of potentials, in order to leverage their potentials we
can start collaborating with you.
Like, I can make my students aware of your ongoing projects, they can study
and contribute if possible.
After getting an idea they may start their own projects. They may
participate in your OPSO conferences etc.

Looking forward to your views and suggestions.

Thanks and Regards,
Shobha Tyagi

Dear Clif,

That is the big reason people could not think of contributing to open
source the project. GNOME community[1] is the most active and great
community we can work with.

Re: [TOS] TOS learning activities that you have or wish you had

2018-09-15 Thread Shobha Tyagi
Hi! Clif,

I keep teaching the students about the benefits of using and contributing
to open source. But I exactly don't know
how to make them real contributors and see them enjoying contributing.
If we have set of rules or steps that our students can follow.
which I can give them as an assignment and award them marks if successfully
achieved their goals.
It would greatly benefit our students who really wish to contribute.

Thanks,
Shobha

Re: [TOS] What makes a "good" open source project for Academic involvement?

2018-03-05 Thread Shobha Tyagi
I found programs like gsoc and outreachy helpful for students to identify
the projects of their interest and interact with the respective project
mentors. There is no academic involvement but as I am open source
enthusiast I promote these programs to my students.
We can do one thing for making open source part of academics. We can give
students extra credits for successfully completing the internship in open
source project. Or open source internship mandatory in any one
undergraduates semester.

Thanks,
Shobha

Having an identified contact would be really helpful. Large projects
can have multiple forms of communication with a variety of people taking
lead roles in each. Figuring out where to begin asking questions is
key. Someone who can provide direction when first getting started is
very helpful. I find this especially true when looking at the junction
of two sub-communities. For instance, looking at the accessibility
aspects of a project. There tends to be one community that focuses on
the project and another overlapping community that focuses on the
accessibility aspects.

Just my 2 cents.
