Ok, thanks for all the replies. I think I've got it, though for newbies
it is not always as simple as just going to the various sites and
reading the stuff. Setting things up "headless" etc means very little to
the uninitiated. Anyway, when time permits I'll give it a go.

Another approach is to use
https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home
The entire setup is done via your web browser

The WD hard drive is a stand alone unit running a Linux distro and LMS.
You connect the player wirelessly to it. Check out 'the thread

You install LMS on the iMac ofcourse.
And no transcoding when running LMS on the Touch so no APE support

Thanks for the
I suggest that as an alternative to trying to use a hard drive attached
to the SBT, that a few alternatives be explored: Raspberry Pi with
attached hard drive and running LMS (several ways of doing this,
including piCorePlayer), and more recently I used the instructions

Going back to the original question, I too would like to plug an
external HD with over 1TB of music into the usb port of the Touch.
My situation is that I am moving from running all my music from a a
large HDD on my PC running LMS to what? That's the question. The PC is
going and all that

Hi Gew,

Can I get around the Squeezebox Radio's lack of USB port some way, and
connect an external hard drive. It's not for music, but elaboration with
Linux stuff, building etc. I find the built-in flash to be very
size-limited.
I have a WD 1TB HDD connected to my Touch. The WD has a wall wart for
power. It works every time (so far). It has about 300GB of songs,
almost all of which are stored @ 320 kbps.

Can your USB HDD be self powered? Relying on the Touch for bus power to

You can't connect a Hard Drive directly to a Touch. Only a USB device
as in Thumb Drive, USB Stick, or USB Drive. It has to have a USB
interface.
When it comes to USB Drives, if using a
