This looks very similar to bug #1878553.
ubuntu-drivers-common reports that iwlwifi is "manually installed"
because "modinfo iwlwifi" returns !0. This causes software-properties-
gtk to display this confusing, mostly greyed out piece of UI.
The iwlwifi module is part of the kernel
As suggested in the description, this is really the same issue as bug
#1434579. Since that old bug report was tracking resolved problems in
other components, instead of making this one a duplicate I'll split off
the ubuntu-drivers-common task here.
** Package changed: software-properties (Ubuntu
Manual mode is selected (and consequently other options are greyed out)
because the UbuntuDrivers module reports manual_install=True for the
device. Diving into the ubuntu-drivers-common code, it invokes "modinfo

I can reliably observe the problem in a groovy VM.
However, contrary to what Séb is observing, "sudo ubuntu-drivers install"
raises an error:

Thanks for testing and the feedback Daniel. You're right, cosmic is not
visibly affected by the bug, nevertheless the fix was backported there
too to satisfy the SRU process (see comment #45). So what should really
be tested is that this doesn't introduce regressions.

Was your /tmp filesystem full at the time of the problem maybe?
Marking invalid for chromium-browser, as it's unlikely it's a problem in
chromium itself (besides the actual crash that you were trying to
report, but without an actual core dump we can't do anything about that
one, unfortunately).
