Yes, I've deleted the failing packages, game servers, debomatic, etc, or in one case masked it so systemd should not try to run it. For the past couple days, chrome on Ubuntu 16.04 takes a REALLY long time (maybe 2 minutes) to start. Once chrome is started, I am not able to sync and any secure password features are broken. I found out this is due to gnome-keyring not being unlocked at login. There's also no way to unlock the "login" portion of the keyring from the running daemon by default. I have to kill the gnome-keyring process and start without "--login" as a parameter. Then the "login" section shows up which I'm able to unlock. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1821491] Re: DNS lookup fails for local hosts
> $ dig phspi05.phs @192.168.2.1 ... > ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 21263 hmm, so, i'm confused now, in the description you said dig works when querying your router directly? I guess that's not the case? It certainly seems like this is not a issue with systemd - your problem appears to be with your router dns configuration. I'll mark this bug as invalid, but let me know if you disagree. > So is it perhaps that my naive expectation that without a domain the host is > assumed to be local is not consistently followed by different > programs/devices? Appending of the "search domains" is done only through the getaddrinfo() (and related) glibc functions. This is the call that uses the /etc/resolv.conf file for configuration to perform its lookup. You can see "man resolv.conf" for specific details on the process, but in most cases it will lookup the hostname you ask for first, and then if that fails it will try looking up the hostname using each 'search' domain you specify. Since modern systems using systemd almost always configure resolv.conf to send all traffic to the local stub resolver (i.e. 127.0.0.53), this in effect means systemd-resolved is responsible for actually talking to all upstream name servers. Note that any program that *does not* use getaddrinfo() completely bypasses this and is free to perform lookups however it wants; dig does just that, by querying *exactly* what you are searching for, to *exactly* the nameserver you specify. You can tell dig to use any search domains specified in /etc/resolv.conf, with the +search parameter; by default it does not use any search domains, and queries only what you ask it for. > Also I now realise that my laptop doesn't know what domain it is part of: > $ domainname > (none) Unless you don't have 'domain' or 'search' defined in /etc/resolv.conf, this doesn't matter for dns resolution. ** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1821491 Title: DNS lookup fails for local hosts Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Mint 19 (Ubuntu Bionic) Laptop so Using NetworkManager, and connecting wirelessly to LAN Upgraded from Mint 18.3 so using resolvconf... [Touch-packages] [Bug 1691908] Re: fstab binds appear as mounts (x-gvfs-hide is being ignored)
This bug is still relevant for Bionic. Any info about possible backport? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to glib2.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1691908 Title: fstab binds appear as mounts (x-gvfs-hide is being ignored) Status in GLib: Expired Status in glib2.0 package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: glib2 version 2.52.2+1+gb8bd46bc8-1 (possibly the version before it as well, I haven't tested) causes fstab binds to appear as mounts in Nautilus (and in Deepin Dock - Deepin is based on Gnome). Downgrading to glib2 and glib2-docs 2.52.0-1 resolves this behaviour. I first noted this bug behaviour here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/+bug/452049 Details of my particular system and issue with what I tried to resolve it can be found here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1712030#p1712030 1. Nautilus to list internal physical drives (my SSD and 1TB HDD) only. 4. Nautilus listed my system disk (as expected) but also listed all of my fstab binds as removable drives (Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos and Documents although this was not listed as "Documents" but instead listed as the HDD label "Farsight"). The apport information in that report was gathered by apt's dpkgpm.cc code and I think we should extend that to gather additional information from the environment at the time that the package installation failed. For example the dist-upgrader sets the following: os.environ["PATH"] = "%s:%s" % (os.getcwd()+"/imported", os.environ["PATH"]) Gathering path from the environment would have made diagnosing bug 1813464 a lot easier. I tested modifying dpkgpm.cc with the following: if(const char* env_p = std::getenv("PATH")) fprintf(report, "EnvPATH: %s\n", env_p); I then installed the crash-in-postinst package from the daisy-plucker- seeds PPA and received a crash report with the EnvPATH key and value. Its worth noting that when apport gathers environment information only a white listed set of keys is gathered to prevent disclosing potentially sensitive information. So we should look at what environment variables the dist-upgrader sets and gather those at a minimum. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1824998] Re: Zanata is messing up the translations
Yes, the string is upstream. Yes, upstream was importing errors from Red Hat translators. I think is related with the Copy Trans feaure of Zanata. I reported this issue upstream a few minutes after reporting in Launchpad and here is his reply: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/issues/160 I also contacted one of the developers of Zanata: Sachin Pathare. https://github.com/orgs/zanata/people Summary: "NetworkManager upstream does not use Zanata. We had a project at zanata.org [1], but that had severe issues, so we are back to po-files and git." "Red Hat uses Zanata internally, but afterwards they get manualy import the plain "po" file in git. Whatever Red Hat translators do, what matters is only what we import. The only upstream location for translations is git (and that's also the place to contribute translations)." ** Bug watch added: gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/issues #160 https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/issues/160 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1824998 Title: Zanata is messing up the translations Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Hi Today is actually impossible to keep NM translations in good shape since Zanata (a tool used in Fedora and Red Hat) is messing up the translations. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1825194] [NEW] resolvconf is racy, which leads to broken resolv.conf in parallel calls
Public bug reported: It has been found that simultaneous calls to resolvconf can lead to inconsistent content in resolv.conf. For instance, no nameservers while NetworkManager has one in its record (see LP: #1824395): $ cat /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN $ cat /run/resolvconf/interface/NetworkManager nameserver 192.168.1.6 nameserver 192.168.1.2 This can happen easily when calling "netplan apply", which can re-start both networkd and NM. resolvconf is called at that point by the "systemd-networkd-resolvconf-update.service" service, and also directly by NetworkManager, which leads to the situation described above. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1821491] Re: DNS lookup fails for local hosts
Thankyou for all the attention to this and the explanations Dan, but now I am also confused... I tend to think that if my desktop is able to successfully lookup the host on the router (as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/resolvconf/+bug/1817903) then I should expect that my laptop on the same lan, should also be able to do so, hence to me it is still a bug... So to clarify for me, if nothing else: If the router dns only has the hostname defined, i.e. phspi05 192.168.2.35 Lookups by the desktop (no NetworkManager, fixed IP) with resolv.conf containing: nameserver 192.168.2.1 nameserver 127.0.0.53 dig phspi05 = success dig phspi05.phs = fail Lookups by the laptop (with NetworkManager, dhcp assigned IP) with resolv.conf containing: nameserver 127.0.0.53 search phs dig phspi05 = fail dig phspi05.phs = fail dig phspi05 @192.168.2.1 = success dig phspi05.phs @192.168.2.1 = fail If I manually edit resolv.conf on the laptop so that it looks like nameserver 192.168.2.1 nameserver 127.0.0.53 search phs dig phspi05 = success So it seems to me that lookups by systemd-resolved are failing to lookup the hostname on the local DNS (even if this is by design) Whatever way I look at it, I have an inconsistency between computers on the same network. If the router has the hostname AND domainname defined: phspi05 192.168.2.35 phspi05.phs 192.168.2.35 then on the desktop dig phspi05 = success dig phspi05.phs = success on laptop dig phspi05 = fails dig phspi05.phs = success I guess I have a workaround to manually edit resolv.conf, and as I don't reboot that often it is not a big issue, but it doesn't feel right somehow. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1821491 Title: DNS lookup fails for local hosts Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Mint 19 (Ubuntu Bionic) Laptop so Using NetworkManager, and connecting wirelessly to LAN Upgraded from Mint 18.3 so using resolvconf... [Touch-packages] [Bug 1813464] Re: dist-upgrader tarball contains and uses an ancient version of invoke-rc.d
For the record I did a search of all the packages in the Ubuntu archive (for Bionic, Cosmic, and Disco) which used the new invoke-rc.d argument of "--skip-systemd-native" and only found sasl2-bin. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1020756] Re: GtkTreeView keyboard binding are not intituive
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users. ** Changed in: gnucash (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to gtk+3.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1020756 Title: GtkTreeView keyboard binding are not intituive Status in GTK+: Expired Status in gnucash package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Most GUIs, like MacOS X, Microsoft Windows and Qt handle the keyboard bindings for its treeviews in the same way: user can easily expand, collapse and move into tree nodes using only the arrow keys. In Gtk+, however, is quite different. User needs to press "plus" and "minus" key to collapse and expand nodes, leaving Right and Left arrows with essentially null functionality. Well yeah, that keys allow to move horizontally into row cells. Seeing many of the applications written using Gtk+, there are not many cases where user find useful moving horizontally across the row with the keyboard, most GtkTreeView that I see are simple and used only to show information. So I guess the current GtkTreeView behaviour is crazy, not useful in most cases, goes against intuition and against good User Experience. I'm really not familiar with Gtk+ programming but, as user, I find this "bug" extremely annoying in my day to day. So, I make some changes in Gtk+ to enhance (from my point of view) the behavior of GtkTreeView with the keyboard. The attached patch to the 3.4 branch modifies the default GtkTreeView behaviour with the keyboard, expanding nodes with the right arrow and collapsing it with left arrow, selecting parent and child nodes when appropriate: - When user press Left on a collapsed node, Gtk+ select the parent node. - When user press right on an expanded node, Gtk+ select the first child node. Users that want to navigate into cells horizontally (as I can see, a non frecuent use case) will need to press Ctrl+. Users can still move to the parent node with the Backspace key, without collapsing anything. I don't know exactly if this behavior change break some expected behavior to application programmer, I hope not. A last question, Why Gtk+ programmers implemented the current GtkTreeView behavior knowing the big difference with other tested GUIs? Best Regards! [Touch-packages] [Bug 1770792] Re: Clean up sync blacklist
You've dropped ccsm from the blacklist, but the sole binary package built from ccsm in Debian comes from compiz source in Ubuntu; I think this needs to be retained. You've traded icedove for thunderbird, but why should thunderbird be blacklisted? It's currently maintained in Ubuntu and not merged from Debian but I don't see any reason in principle that it couldn't be. Why are you dropping the blacklist of fbxkb, which was identified in the blacklist file as "obsolete GNOME panel applet"? I am satisfied that the rest of the changes here are correct, however I would want the rationales to be better documented in the commit history. I would ask you to please: - rebase on the current sync-blacklist branch (there is a conflict) - divide the commits up according to rationale (e.g., dropped because package removed from unstable; vs dropped because package is now in Ubuntu again; vs. reshuffling of file contents) - resubmit Or, you can punt this to me to do and I'll apply these changes when I have a chance. ** Changed in: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to ubuntu-meta in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1770792 Title: Clean up sync blacklist Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I am attaching a bzr branch here. But still, please make this rationale apparent in the commit history. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to ubuntu-meta in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1770792 Title: Clean up sync blacklist Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I am attaching a bzr branch here. Because the sync blacklist is a "junk" bzr repository, Launchpad isn't letting me make a merge proposal for it. I think it makes the blacklist easier to read and use if we get rid of all the old entries. I went through and verified that these removals were removed from Debian. There are a few exceptions (gdm3 and openssl1.0) which didn't need to be blacklisted anymore. I mostly ignored the Mozilla extensions. The Mozilla situation is interesting this year, but I'll save that discussion for later. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1821491] Re: DNS lookup fails for local hosts
> So it seems to me that lookups by systemd-resolved > are failing to lookup the hostname on the local DNS > (even if this is by design) yes, this is by design. systemd-resolved never forwards "single label" addresses to upstream nameservers. > If the router has the hostname AND domainname defined: > phspi05 192.168.2.35 > phspi05.phs 192.168.2.35 you don't need the router configured to resolve the "single label" (without .phs) hostname (unless your router doesn't have 'phs' in its resolv.conf search list, and you need to look up the hostname from the router itself). > on laptop > dig phspi05 = fails stop using dig to debug your system. the behavior above is correct (dig *should* fail when querying the local systemd-resolved resolver without using .phs domain suffix). Instead try using a program that uses getaddrinfo(), like nslookup, ping, or even host. e.g.: $ host phspi05 > I guess I have a workaround to manually edit resolv.conf, and as I don't > reboot that often it is not a big issue, but it doesn't feel right somehow. it isn't right, and you don't need to. Just make sure your router delivers your domain as part of its dhcp reply, and you will be fine. Your resolv.conf will contain your local domain in its 'search' and all programs on your system using getaddrinfo() and friends will correctly look up any address with your domain appended. As part of this, system bell events are now captured by metacity, which uses libcanberra to play a sound. For users without speakers, this fails to be useful. The current setup makes restoring the old behavior extremely difficult. The absolute show stopper is that metacity traps audible system bell events. This behavior is, as best we can tell, not configurable. The attached patch keeps metacity from capturing system bell events. It also removes the sound playback capability. As Lucid will be using pulse audio's module-x11-bell to play sounds for system bell events, it is not necessary for this capability to be in metacity. Additionally, this removes the discrepancy between metacity's and compiz's handling of system bell events. There are several other difficulties in enabling the system bell: 1) Even if it is taken out of the blacklist, the pcspkr module may not load properly. Another modprobe may be necessary to get it loaded. See bug #398161. 2) Something in Gnome's startup does the equivalent of `xset b off`, so `xset b on` must be run on every login. (Note that bug #280767 keeps you from setting the bell volume with xset.) 3) A number of settings in gnome-terminal and gconf may keep the shell from sounding system bell events. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1821491] Re: DNS lookup fails for local hosts
Thanks again Dan for taking the time to explain. > stop using dig to debug your system. Sorry thought I was using dig at your request... I was originally using nslookup and ping to find out why I couldn't browse to the server on phspi05 (phspi05 is actually controlling the heating and cooling in my glasshouse) and confusingly to me they give different results, ping often works when nslookup fails (as is currently the case on the desktop) > you don't need the router configured to resolve the "single label" (without > .phs) hostname ... I have managed to telnet into the router: # cat /etc/resolv.conf domain phs nameserver 208.67.222.222 nameserver 212.159.6.10 so clearly the domain is set, but if I remove the single label entry from the router even ping fails from the desktop (but still works on the laptop) and it seems that when providing an address via dhcp (e.g. to the laptop) the router puts both phs09 and phs09.phs in /etc/hosts, so I guess the router needs it... [Touch-packages] [Bug 1825194] Re: resolvconf is racy, which leads to broken resolv.conf in parallel calls
** Tags added: disco ** Tags added: rls-ee-incoming -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to resolvconf in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1825194 Title: resolvconf is racy, which leads to broken resolv.conf in parallel calls Status in resolvconf package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: It has been found that simultaneous calls to resolvconf can lead to inconsistent content in resolv.conf. For instance, no nameservers while NetworkManager has one in its record (see LP: #1824395): $ cat /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN $ cat /run/resolvconf/interface/NetworkManager nameserver 192.168.1.6 nameserver 192.168.1.2 This can happen easily when calling "netplan apply", which can re- start both networkd and NM. resolvconf is called at that point by the "systemd-networkd-resolvconf-update.service" service, and also directly by NetworkManager, which leads to the situation described above. This is not surprising as there is nothing preventing different instances of resolvconf to access the same files. This sort of situation can be reproduced by running in a loop commands like: $ printf "\n" | sudo resolvconf -a NetworkManager & printf "\n" | sudo resolvconf -a networkd $ printf "nameserver 80.58.61.250\n" | sudo resolvconf -a NetworkManager & printf "\n" | sudo resolvconf -a networkd Eventually, this leads to a resolv.conf that is not consistent with the last run command. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1821491] Re: DNS lookup fails for local hosts
> Sorry thought I was using dig at your request... yes, sorry - dig is useful *but* it does only what you ask it specifically to do (i.e. lookup the specific hostname you ask it for, without appending any search domains to it). this is different from everything else on your system, which uses getaddrinfo(), which will append search domains listed in /etc/resolv.conf. > ping often works when nslookup fails i can't say *exactly* why this is, but I suspect it's because you had two nameservers listed in /etc/resolv.conf; your router (which *will* resolve the hostname without any domain suffix) and your local systemd- resolved resolver (which *will not* resolve the hostname without a domain suffix, since it won't pass the "single label" hostname to your router nameserver). i believe (don't remember the specifics of the glibc internals tho) that getaddrinfo() will do round-robin queries of each nameserver you list in /etc/resolv.conf, so it may be random chance that one thing looks up your host right, and the next request doesn't. > so clearly the domain is set that will let you do "single label" lookups *from your router only*. setting the router's search domain(s) will have *no effect at all* on lookups from any other system. just make sure: -your router's dhcp configuration includes your local subnet domain (i.e. provides it to your dhcp clients) -your router's dnsmasq (or whatever public nameserver program) has your local subnet hosts *including local subnet domain* defined -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1821491 Title: DNS lookup fails for local hosts Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Mint 19 (Ubuntu Bionic) Laptop so Using NetworkManager, and connecting wirelessly to LAN Upgraded from Mint 18.3 so using resolvconf... When booting machine from off state, avahi-daemon uses an entire CPU at max load for approx 10 minutes. During this time, internet connectivity via wifi is essentially unusable. The wifi connection is good, but it seems that http transactions are cutoff mid-way so no webpage is able to load. When waking from sleep, the avahi-daemon causes similar symptoms, but with less than 1 full cpu usage, and with somewhat less degraded network performance, but still quite unusable. I have never had issues with avahi prior to the 18.10 upgrade, so I am fairly confident the issue is rooted in that change. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1409872] Re: avahi-0.6.31 doesn't pass Apple conformance test
** Changed in: avahi Status: Unknown => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to avahi in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1409872 Title: avahi-0.6.31 doesn't pass Apple conformance test Status in Avahi: New Status in avahi package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: We are working on to support Apple bonjour conformance test-1.3.0 and test fails with avahi version 0.6.31 for test case - SRV PROBING/ANNOUNCEMENTS. This test fails both on IPV4 and IPV6. And the configured network package - dhcpcd-6.6.4. After parsing all logs(wireshark, apple PC and linux PC syslogs), and looks like avahi does not support a particular scenario in which Apple bonjour conformance test looks for. And also confirmed Apple test is inline with the RFC 6762 document for a special use-case(resolving SRV names on power up). Below is the bug description, setup: Apple MAC with Bonjour conformance test - 1.3.0 (latest OS x) Apple airport (latest version) Linux device(PC) (ubuntu 14.04) Configure all above devices to communicate on link local mode. 1) Start avahi bonjour conformance test on APPLE PC and Power ON linux device with avahi-0.6.31 and with _ssh._tcp.local service file 2) First Linux device sends SRV initial probe message on link and followed by apple test sends same SRV (Linux device) question on link, example:(commands on wire shark) Linux Device sends -> Who has "SSH" SRV QM question? Apple Bonjour Conformance Test -> Who has "SSH" SRV QM question? 3) Then after this there is no message from Linux device on network and Apple test expecting new SRV probe message from device. And so conformance test failed, since device couldn't able to send new SRV probe message with new name for service "SSH" 4) After parsing log files found that, avahi-daemon logged service with new name ("SSH #2") in log file and could not publish/probe SRV message on network. Linux device syslog messages, Loading service file /etc/avahi/services/ssh.service Service name conflict for "SSH" (/etc/avahi/services/ssh.service), retrying with "SSH #2).
