I have the same problem with Sony WF-1000XM3 and Ubuntu 16.04. I
realized that when the headphones connect automatically, they don't
appear when running ``pacmd list-sinks``. If I disconnect and reconnect
them manually, they do and a2dp is used.
I wrote a couple of scripts to automatize this and
