[Touch-packages] [Bug 1398564] Re: The play video interface displays blank screen on resume

2014-12-03 Thread Jim Hodapp
That's interesting, I couldn't reproduce this yesterday but thanks to
your comment I realized it might be because I was testing with the
device connected to USB (and thus charging). The wakelocks behave
differently in this situation. I'll try to reproduce again.

Title:
   please integrate mediascanner2 and media-hub with trust-store

Status in “media-hub” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “mediascanner2” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Bug #1303962 added apparmor mediation to media-hub that achieves the
following when an apps uses the 'audio' policy group:
   * an app are allowed to play content from its install directory
   * an app is able to play content from its local cache directory
   * an app is able to play content from its local data directory
   * an app is able to access the camera click

Trust store integration is not yet implemented and the media-hub has a
hardcoded exception in src/core/media/player_skeleton.cpp to allow the
music app to play files from ~/Music and ~/Videos.

  AppStore apps:
   1. should be able to access their own content (installed or local)
   2. should not be able to access, play or otherwise enumerate other apps'
media (ie, app 'foo' should not be able to play the facebook app's sound file
   3. AppStore apps should be able to enumerate the global music (~/Music) and
video (~/Video) library via the mediascanner helper with permission from the
user
   4. AppStore apps should be able to play the global music (~/Music) and video
(~/Video) library via the media-hub with permission from the user
   5. AppStore apps should be able to have access to media files with
permission from the user. This is already handled by the content-hub paradigm
(though someone would need to add a media content provider for the content-hub
to have this work)

'1' and '2' are implemented in the media-hub via bug #1303962
(mediascanner2 still needs apparmor integration). This bug is for '3'
and '4' and this can be done via the trust-store. To have the best
user experience and prevent multiple prompting, mediascanner and
media-hub should use the same trust store database. I'm not sure that
mediascanner2 offers a DBus API for enumerating global media files yet
or not (music-app seems to be accessing files in ~/.cache/media-art/
  and ~/.cache/mediascanner directly).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1191934] Re: orientation wrong in playback for recorded videos

2014-10-16 Thread Jim Hodapp
Added thumbnailer since it also needs to rotate the still image that it
gets from the hardware video decoder using GStreamer. Basically it needs
to look for the image-orientation tag in the GstTagList that gets
broadcasted by the Gst pipeline. Then look for values of rotate-0,
rotate-90, rotate-180, rotate-270 for the queue in what to do.
This info comes from the MPEG4 container file itself, parsed by qtdemux
and added to a GstTagList. Take a look at qtvideo-node
shadervideomaterial.cpp file for how to do the matrix operations
manually. Or you might take a look at using the videoflip plugin from
GStreamer to do this as it listens for the exact same GstTagList values
that I mentioned above.

Bug description:

  Take a picture with camera-app
swipe to the right to display it
it looks squashed and like it's being displayed at the wrong aspect ration
open the gallery-app and view the photo and it looks equally bad
share the photo to messaging-app, and the preview of the photo is black
copy the photo to your desktop and open there and the photo looks fine

these are all new regressions, not sure what layer it's in bug
guessing a low layer as gallery, camera and messaging-app have not
  changed in this regard

Status in “camera-app” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
The fact that the shutter sound when taking a camera picture is in the
abstraction layer, forces that sound to be played every time a shot is
taken with the QML Camera component.

This means app developers cannot disable or override the shutter sound
in their apps. One use case for this I encountered was while writing a
QR code application that continuously takes shots and analyzes the
image to scan a QR code. The fact that the shutter sound is played
continuously prevents me from being able to use the QML camera
  component.

rsalveti dpm: the sound file itself is available in the android system
partition, and used by the app, let me find the code
  rsalveti
qtubuntu-camera-0.3.3+13.10.20130919.2/src/aalimagecapturecontrol.cpp

m_audioPlayer-setMedia(QUrl::fromLocalFile(/system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg));

So after a conversation with rsalveti and jhodapp it seems that the
shutter sound is only required by the camera app, but for some reason
rather than put it in the camera app itself, it was added to the
abstraction layer. Their suggestion was to file a bug to remove the
sound from the abstraction layer and put it in the app, so that app
developers can use the upstream QML component and be able to decide
whether to play a sound and which one.

Bug description:
On the mako / Nexus 4, the camera has an LED to use for camera flash.
Our camera app supports the flash, and fires it while taking a picture
with flash enabled. However, the resulting image ends up severely
underexposed, to the point where almost the entire image is black.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Run the camera app.
  2. Take a picture with flash off.
  3. Turn the flash setting on and take a picture of the same scene again.
  4. Go to the gallery app to view the results.

Expected results: The picture with flash should appear brighter (or,
at least, appear how most with-flash pictures look).

Actual results: The picture with flash is almost completely black,
with only a few dim details in the brightest parts of the image.

Title:
Please provide Ubuntu camera service that integrates with trust-store

Status in “qtubuntu-camera” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Currently Ubuntu Touch is using the android camera-service and that is
  the plan for 13.10.

Going forward in 14.04, the android camera-service will no longer be
used and camera access is going to move to the Ubuntu side. There was
discussion of either using HAL directly (direct access to devices) or
using a camera-service type thing in Ubuntu.

Using devices directly causes at least a few problems:
   * can't prevent more than one user from accessing the device at a time
   * enumerating camera devices for apparmor policy is extra maintenance for
porters
   * can't provide a contextual runtime prompt for access (like we (will) do
with online accounts, location, microphone). This is particularly important for
application confinement.

Instead of direct hardware access, an out of process helper (in
relation to the app) can be used to address all of these problems,
similar to what pulseaudio does for audio. This service can ensure
only one user can access the device at a time and since the service
accesses the the device files on the app's behalf, we don't need to
enumerate devices in /dev in policy. Furthermore, when an app accesses
the service (ideally over DBus), the service can contact trust-store,
the trust-store will prompt the user (Foo wants to access the camera.
Is this ok? Yes|No), then optionally cache the result and return the
result to the service. In this manner the user is given a contextual
prompt at the time of access by the app. By using caching this
decision can be remembered the next time. If caching is used, there
should be a method to change the decision in system settings.

If direct hardware access is needed for performance reasons, it is
possible to use fd delegation in AppArmor and have the service open
the device and pass the fd to the app without having to enumerate the
/dev devices. Please talk to jjohansen if pursuing this option.

Lastly, bug #1230391 discusses providing a visual cue during
background recording for audio. We will need to do the same for video
recording. Feel free to add a task to bug #1230391 if there is work to
integrate this new service with that visual cuing.

This should be implemented in time for shippable devices to address
  the application confinement concern.

So it seems it is the core GStreamer library upgrade that broke it then.
We'll need to look at the diff between the last version we had and this
one to try to narrow down what broke things.

@Pat: to do this, we need to finish the qtmultimedia port to gstreamer

not all of it. It's submitted upstream already, but Digia is not
prioritizing any engineering time to finish this up, so it will be up to

trying to downgrade gstreamer first.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1365497] Re: Inform user when a video format is not supported

2014-09-17 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Renato: yeah media-hub will have completely undefined behavior for
unsupported formats right now as there is nothing in place to gracefully
handle them and report an error. I'm not quite sure what you were
expecting?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1365497] Re: Inform user when a video format is not supported

2014-09-17 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Renato: Thanks for the links, that'll be useful for a proper
implementation. However, as I noted above, there is nothing underneath
in the backend that will properly raise the error signal. In the
meantime, I think we could do a simple implementation in qtubuntu-media
based on the file extension that raises an error or not depending on if
we support that container (and assumed common codec type(s)) in the
container. After I finish up the video freeze/framerate bug and fix the
video recording orientation bugs, I can assess working out a time table
for a proper solution for this bug.

2014-09-17 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Bill: yes I agree and there is a proper solution to this, I was just
trying to give you and Renato an idea of what could be a stop-gap
measure until I get the higher priority bugs out of the way. So my
question is, do you need/want a temporary solution or can you wait until
I tackle the other two large bugs knowing that it could be a couple of
weeks before I get to the proper solution?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 228487] Re: can only have one audio output program working at a time

2014-09-10 Thread Jim Lawrence
I have purged, replaced all the PulseAudio componenets and rebooted and
restarted, but nothing seems to work...Skype has refused to produce any
sound. This problem must have been created by a recently installed or
updated application as a similar computer, in the office, currently, has
no such issues. I have taken the precaution of blocking all updates
until this problem can be resolved, as I believe it was caused through a
standard system update. (The OS is Ubuntu 14.04, 32bit).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1366586] Re: Music app stops playing when an app plays a sound

2014-09-10 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Sam Bull: yes, but that would be a bug with the given app that should
be fixed. As far as a text message goes, it should no longer pause
playback when it comes in...it should instead cause the playback volume
to decrease during the alert, then increase back to full volume (called
the duckin effect in pulse audio terminology).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1365497] Re: Inform user when a video format is not supported

2014-09-10 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Bill: No formal way of doing it yet. I need to add some code to my
GStreamer decoder plugin to return this list (it already gets it from
the Android layer, just needs to export it) to media-hub where media-hub
would present it to a client. I would say for now, put in a static list
of mpeg4 and h264 for video codec types. It should support all of the
major container types, so no need to check for that. Would you mind
filing a bug against media-hub and qtubuntu-media to add this support?

Indicator messages should use something contextual such as No current

obvious what this indicator is used for, especially to the first time
user.

  2. Copy it to /home/phablet/Videos with MTP (nautilus or gvfs-copy)

  4. Locate the video in the gallery
  5. Tap the video thumbnail to play it in the media player

  ACTUAL RESULT
The video plays but is black or green and with audio only, or doesn't play at

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1355095] Re: mediaplayer hangs on fast-forward

2014-09-03 Thread Jim Hodapp
@bill: No I've not seen it do this before. Could be specific to the
video file used but either way, it's definitely a bug somewhere in the
stack.

@Jean-Baptiste: The player hangs and never resumes playing even after
waiting for say a minute or more (I know that's ridiculous, but I'm
curious)?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1337239] Re: Digitiser still works when phone locked

2014-08-25 Thread Jim Hodapp
This is an interesting bug because the system state request seen in
powerd has to do with keeping the device from going into a deep sleep,
but it shouldn't affect the input state of the device because it's not a
display wakelock. This might possibly be an issue at a lower layer even
under powerd. I'll subscribe rsalveti so he can give his thoughts on
this.

One question I have. If you pause the music and then lock the screen
manually, does this bug still happen?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1347721] Re: Saucy - Trusty upgrade failed: procps fails to configure

2014-08-11 Thread Jim Fenton
For those of us who have been affected by the bug, it would be good to
have guidance on whether we need to do a clean install of 14.04 or if
there's some other action that should be taken. As some others have
reported, my system seems to be working properly, but would like to know
if there's some inconsistency I'm not seeing.

I'm just performing 14.04.1 pre-release testing and decided to try a Saucy -
Trusty upgrade even though Saucy recently reached EOL. I'd expected to be told
no upgrade was available (or was impossible) early in the process if it were
not possible at this point in time but the upgrade appeared to be in progress
until the attached warning appeared (I'd guess about half-way into the upgrade
process based on lapsed time) .

No idea what will happen on reboot so I wanted to file this prior to
  reboot. I'll follow up later.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1347721] Re: Saucy - Trusty upgrade failed: procps fails to configure

2014-08-11 Thread Jim Fenton
@Brian - I updated from 13.10. All I did to recover was wait for the
aborted upgrade to complete or recover, and rebooted my system, and it
claims to be running 14.04 now. The only thing that seemed potentially
funny was a message, error: diskfilter writes are not supported when I
booted it. Someone (I think in one of the duplicate bugs) mentioned that
rebooting was successful on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors.

@Adam - would love to test it but I no longer have a Saucy system to
test it on unless I need to restore from backup, which I'm hoping isn't
necessary.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1340345] Re: please use exclusive pipe access for /dev/socket/micshm

2014-07-31 Thread Jim Hodapp
This should no longer apply since the file permissions on the pipe are
restrictive enough. An app would have to be in the android_media group
or run as a user by the same name to be able to open the pipe. Currently
the only two things that can do that right now are qtubuntu-camera and
camera_service on the Android side. Is this exclusive enough to satisfy
your requirements?

Bug description:
13:28 jdstrand jhodapp: ok, so, unless there are implementation flaws
(which are just bugs that we can fix later on), a malicious app with access to
/android/micshm can't do anything to DoS the service or to record in the
background, correct?
13:29 jhodapp jdstrand: correct, because there technically would be a
reader on the Android side always open, but it won't be doing any reads unless
triggered by kicking off the recording process
13:34 jdstrand jhodapp: could a malicious app could in theory interfere
with an app that is already recording?
13:35 jhodapp jdstrand: in theory yes...I need to see if I could have the
active reader/writer pair open the named pipe exclusively
13:36 jhodapp jdstrand: so that only one writer is allowed
13:49 jdstrand jhodapp: I think that would be a reasonable security
improvement. I won't block adding the rule to policy though. pulseaudio itself
isn't particularly great on this point aiui, and it too will need to be hardened
13:49 jhodapp jdstrand: indeed...exclusive pipe access would actually be
an improvement over how AudioFlinger does it...I'm pretty sure it's using an
unprotected pipe

No video selected to play. Connect your phone to your computer to

The lens term shouldn't be used, it's obsolete; in the Unity8 world
we only have scopes. At the very least it should be updated to say
scope instead, but perhaps there is a better way (Video Dash
page?), as majority of phone users will have no clue what scope is.
  Please check with design.
