please update trisquel repos to firefox 18
I think I've seen the x230, if it's what I think it is, congrats. Probably
one of the best laptops you can get. Nice to hear it is working so well with
Trisquel too.

Thanks a lot for reporting your laptop to h-node. Contributions are highly

By the way, have you tried the newest linux-libre with your laptop? I think
there is this one guy here in the forums who has his own repository for the

There is no firefox in the Trisquel's repos because firefox suggest's some
non-free add-ons to the user. There might be some other small freedom issues
too if I recall but I'm not sure. Anyway, we have abrowser (which is
basically firefox with the freedom issues solved). It would be nice if

So perhaps you need to compile the module?
I've never had to compile any packages I got from Add/Remove Applications or
Synaptic before. Never got those package-name-src packages, and I guess
you're saying this could be like one of those? Where do I go to compile it?
What command do I run?
oh, well
I've noticed lately that I am unable to browse some sites (my bank for
instance) correctly with abrowser (v16), although it used to work fine, and
it works perfectly fine with Midori or GNU IceCat (v17). I'll try to empty
my cache and see if things change, but if it doesn't, then it would
If you want GNOME Shell, install gnome-session, then pick GNOME for the
desktop session when you log in (instead of GNOME Classic). I'm using GNOME
Shell on Trisquel 5.5 right now. I gather it's a bit more complicated with
Trisquel 6, but I haven't read the details:
With regards to the BIOS patching, I should firstly add that it is a
potentially risky process and it might leave your laptop in a non-working
state. This might just be a routine warning, as I don't know how often the
process fails.
Having said that, I did in fact patch my BIOS (IIRC:

Then make a temporary directory somewhere where you have write privileges,
e.g. ~/temp and copy the source tree there. Including the subfolders and
their contents. (This way you don't have to compile as root.)

As the old saying goes, there's more than one way to skin a cat.
Personally, I like my cat and have no wish to skin it, but that's beside the
point. Having only temporary success with only one of the above methods, I
tried something I learned in another OS (shhh!). Here's what I did:

Thank you for that suggestion!
I was curious what GNOME Shell might look like.
Installing on a second machine running Trisquel 5.5 gave me the GNOME desktop
after installing gnome-shell and gnome-session.
On the Trisquel 6 machine:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
Sounds relatively straightforward :) Thanks, I will try this soon (tonight at
earliest) and report back with how it turns out!
That would be:
$ mkdir ~/temp; cd ~/temp
$ apt-get download virtualbox-dkms
$ dpkg --extract virtualbox-dkms[...] .
However, there is no configure file there. I believe the virtualbox-dkms
files are used when GENERATING a initramfs image or something like this.
I didn't get through that
I've bought the USB wireless adapter from Think Penguin. I'm in New York so
it should be here soon. I will see about updating an entry to h-node.org. I
have a handy URL address I could link here, too, about my system...instead of
typing it all out. I'll just need to find it.
Thank you for
Actually, It's FCC regulations that forced IBM to Whitelist their Wireless

I have a possible solution, but it involves using non-free utility once and
then you can remove it once the job is done. (well, I only know of non-free

While this was initially the explanation given they have since flip flopped.
The flip flop occurred because the FCC explicitly said there was no such
requirement. Everything suggests a financial motive.
I also want to point out that while IBM/Lenovo may have been the first

The FCC is a sucker for big business and proprietary software. This link is
an interesting read BTW (from someone who knows FCC regulation):
I'd probably complain to the bank. Chance are they don't have any control
over it... but it can't hurt. The software is likely written by a company

It probably would and is a better solution from a free software perspective
than installing Firefox. I think for most people I'd suggest just sticking
with abrowser and modifying the string. There is even a plug-in to do this
too.
His repository works great. There are a few minor issues if you need to run
virtualbox although other than that it usually works well to fix the lack of
support for at least some newer hardware.

Those solutions did not work for me, and doing a web search is leading me to
areas that are too complicated for me to tackle. It seems my case is
sufficiently atypical that the only way to (possibly) fix it would be to

Looks like this one is somehow automagically compiled by dkms.
Perhaps if one removes the virtualbox-dkms package and installs the dkms
package and then re-installs the virtualbox-dkms package the auto compile
would get triggered?
And then the modprobe to add the module.
