I can run the Triskel 7.0 Live CD with the qemu-system-i386 command which is much the same thing. Sounds like you might not have defined enough virtual machine memory. 2G is recommended for modern desktops, so that'll definitely be plenty if you can spare it.

If I had need of finding open WiFi I'd use my Android mobile and set it to notify me when there's one available. The OpenWLANMap app on F-droid.org logs WiFi APs and their location as you go and has a 'find nearest open hotspot button.' Might be better for your purposes, but I haven't used

Reverse-engineering is possible, but don't hold your breath. If you can't reverse-engineer it yourself, your best bet is to get a new wireless card or USB wireless adapter that works with libre software today. Think Penguin[1] is a good store to buy those from. [1]

There's a minor error on the Tehnoetic product page. It says Both the driver and the firmware of this adapter are free under the GNU GPL v2 license. The firmware isn't under the GPL, it's under the Clear BSD license.
