Makes sense. I'm gonna lean towards a minimalistic use as well, and that's
not even because of privacy issues.
Mostly because it's only a tool, there's more to life overall.
I'm replying to myself because someone downvoted my comment, yay !
WTF? It was only a rough conclusion of what was said before, no real new info
besides comparing Tor and VPN side by side... If with great power comes great
responsibility, with or without freedom, idiocy remains.
Anyway,
This driver actually is free:

It consists of 3 files, all under the GPL, with no binary blobs or anything.

I did not try all kinds of videos. Youtube does not work, *flv. I'll test the
different formats during the next days und let you know. Thanks for now.

Thank you very much especially Magic Banana and also lembas :))). Finally
I got it work (yupiii) :)
The latest kernel which is working with my card was and could be installed
by:
apt-get install linux-image-3.11.0-20-generic linux-headers-3.11.0-20-generic
linux-tools-3.11.0-20-generic
So we can end the wild goose chase around build-essential here... It would be
much faster if we knew from beginning what you're trying to do. :)
Packages depend on other packages. In order to find out what packages package
A depends on you can use the commandapt-cache depends A
Now, note
Any videos or some particular video? How are you trying to watch them/it?
Hello,
I have a newbie question. How can I configure my printer? I have a Brother
DCP-145. I downloaded the two drivers already. How can I install them. I am
used to Xubuntu for a while and tried it that way, but it doesn't work. How
can I manage to do that.
Many thanks.

Hello,
on my monitor the resolution seems to be pretty small. Is it possible to
enlarge it. My eyes will appreciate that. ;)
Mayn thanks.

I do not think you need to download any driver by hand. Are they even free
software?
There is a utility in the System settings to add printers... but I ended up
using an older one (that used to be shipped with Trisquel 6):
system-config-printer-gnome that you can, for instance, install
First of all: when someone giving you directions writes a line that starts
with $ , it means what comes after should be entered in a terminal as a
regular user. The dollar sign followed by a space is called a prompt. The
terminal shows it when ready to execute a command. Do not type that
Many thanks, that worked. I should have find out by myself. ;)

the terminal tells me I have unmet dependencies, so I need something like
build-essential to get the command to work
No, you don't. We have already told you.
the terminal tells me I have unmet dependencies, so I need something like
build-essential to get the command to work, the unly thing is that I cannot
unpack build-essential as a result.
hm sudo apt-get upgrade/update worked fine I recall. But as soon as it would
be sudo apt-get install
Thank you. But when I try to install a printer in the system settings, the
button to add a printer is inactive. When I did that in Ubuntu, the installed
driver didn't work. So I installed the one from Brother, which worked
properly. I do have the drivers for my printer on a flash-card. Under
A few days ago I tried your $ nautilus suggestion and got all of my home
folder contents in the terminal not in what I think you mean by graphical.
I couldn't do anything with them in the terminal.
Today I tried $ nautilus again, in several combinations, and had no luck at
all:
just an observation: I always thought Steve Jobs had the Prairie Dog look.
Glad to hear that, this might be useful to other people in the same nasty
situation.
That GRUB_DEFAULT= line you tried to change is the menu entry which should be
booted by default, as can be found out from
https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/
I haven't had any security updates in 2 weeks. Is there some problem with the
new infrastructure?
ati video card? Trisquel 7? I guess you have also a screen resolution
something like 1024*768 .. Yes?
Ati cards require non free firmware for video acceleration. I guess your
problem is caused by the video player you are using (like totem or vlc) set
to use the wrong outpout driver (I think
Yes, I've tried it, but the printerdriver seems to be proprietary. Ich think,
you meant should not use... ;) That doesn'sound good. Which printer is
recommendable? I like inkjets. I scanner would be fine, but not necessary.
Hello,
my next problem seems to be the monitor. I can't see videos. I here the tone
but no video. Does anybody have an idea or would the answer be that the
driver is proprietary?
Regards, Aramorel
what video card?
lspci | grep VGA
I'll check it out. Many thanks. :)
I said above : I need something like build-essential.
Build essential or something else, something that can get meet the
dependancies, the only software that I know of that can meet the dependancies
and that is the best I have heard so far is build-essential, that is why I am
talking about
