Hello vinzv,
This is a very good idea. I've been thinking along the same lines myself but
I just wasn't able to put it into words. Also my lack of experience in the
area of marketing put me off suggesting the idea.
If there is anything I can do I would be more than happy to help in any way
Maybe we could get the FAQ to the top menu as it's quite hidden at the
moment? Or have it linked below the What is Trisquel box in the center
besides the screenshot?
thanks, this process with exporting the list of packages intriques me as it
creates a guide to the state of the system without an actual clone.
however when using that guide to restore, it will presumably fail to restore
packages for which it doesn't have a repo - ie anything compiled
but a user application is not really a system file, and the makers of the
installer that put the app somewhere other than /opt have already messed
with the correct way of doing things...
there's no point in having a spec, and me spending time trying to understand

I think everybody can help! At least by stating opinions or throwing in
ideas. :)
On making something official it's a bit too early I think. I have a
non-formal go from aklis on #trisquel-dev which - at least for me - is
enough at the moment. As soon as we have some things to be published
and we are heading towards a society where just posting anonymously online
anywhere could mean jail time in the future.
I really hope there are wars before that. I hope somehow the south rises
again. I would very much like to see this global system destroyed: where
everyone now lives under
There have been bugs filed and many people are experiencing this problem. Due
to the fact that this is the default browser for the system and it is the
most friendly to most mainstream sites I don't know why this is taking so
long for there to be an official response.

Superduper's own descripition epxlains its to backup your system to bootable
recovery media. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't know how cloning one
machine and restoring it to another machine with different hardware doesn't
cause problems.
I'm having trouble perceiving any benefits so far, but I will keep learning
and thinking about it.
I think that much of it does not make much sense nowadays. The current FHS
evolved from the file hierarchy of the UNIX systems from the 70s. Some
distinctions only exist to have some kind of

It is my understanding that many debian packages which rely on such
mechanisms have their own debian packages for their dependencies, even when
those dependencies are in other repositories. I suppose however that if
software packaged in Trisquel downloads dependencies from external repos
Why not just send it without a return address? You could even mail it from a

yeah..many laptops have that. Mine has it. A little rectangular button near

I'm sure he checked that out though.. :)
Do you have a physical switch? :)
Superduper sounds like it is to backup your own system, similar to
clonezilla, not to install on a bunch of other systems. I still don't
believe I'm understanding what you are trying to do. Are you just wanting to
backup your disk? Or install a similar setup on other computers? If

I vote for moving the faq to the top. I need another look; it may be

The browser is one of the most important components of an OS these days (if
not the most important one). There are also no real Libre alternatives
available for Trisquel. I am writing this from QupZilla right now but you

So without a browser,
It's a shame CPUs never get any faster like they used to, this problem would

thanks, that archive is good to know about.
I understand about usr/bin now, when the spec says commands,
translated/updated to any time in the last 20 years, that means applications,
not just terminal commands.
this is a VERY different system structure paradigm from what I am used to,
I use superduper for both tasks. backing up a system configuration and
installing it on another machine. But not for regular backups of my own
documents, I use time machine, like deja dup, for that, which is a much
easier task. (or simply drag and drop them onto another drive for a one off
The complaint tab doesn't pop up on the Trisquel site for me, and I use LibreJS.
That's exactly what I thought of. Kudos for that.
Most of us use Package manager to install Programs
in trisquel all the repositorys is free software
But wait
There is programming language package manager like pip, go, rubygems and much
more.
Most of them contain free software, but some are non-free.
Most JavaScript libraries are free/libre (jQuery, Bootstrap, AngularJS, ...).
There are some notable exceptions, like Highcharts (CC BY-NC-SA). They just
don't follow the LibreJS spec to save file size (most JavaScript distributed
today is minified).
Couldn't you make an ISO out of your current installed disk, put that on a USB
(not burn it to the USB, just store it on the USB) and then boot with a live
distribution from one USB port, stick the USB storing the ISO in the other
port, and then dd the ISO from the other USB to the disk. Just a

I use LibreJS, and the complaint tab appears on about 90% of the sites I visit.
Is all that JavaScript really non-free? Or was LibreJS just not able to find
licensing information? I don't run JavaScript that LibreJS tells me is
non-free, but I have my doubts...
Tell me- do you support slavery?
The Bible does.
It is supposed to indicate the presence of non-free JavaScript- it doesn't pop
up on the Trisquel site (at least for me) and doesn't show up on old HTML-only
sites, or my blog, which runs Wordpress.
It isn't normal, and shouldn't be showing up on the Trisquel site.
In fact, the LibreJS settings clearly state that the complaint tab is only
supposed to appear if non-free JS is detected. Besides, it would be pretty much
pointless and misleading for it to appear of every site regardless.
that seems like a good start, and similar to what clonezilla does - If i
understand correctly. How would you make the initial iso of the installed
system?
fundamentally, we sort of agree, but are coming from very different angles.
bad GUIs are certainly worse than no GUIs.
It isn't just remembering dd, it is in general each terminal task requires me
to remember a few different commands, I have to remember them precisely, not
just roughly,
that writer is distinguishing between 2 different things laboriously and
using the word stupid for both of them. The word ignorant is more correct and

I am ignorant of it, not stupid about it.
Thanks very much for the swift reply. I've tried that to no avail. Indeed,
synclient with no arguments returns me a list of settings in which this is
already set to 0. Unsetting it and resetting it then rebooting doesn't help
either. Any other ideas?
this seems like a good place to mention an idea I had for learnability in

Many programming languages come with their own package managers to ease
installation of new software as well as libraries. You can install those
packages globally (system-wide) or locally (in a folder). Examples of those
packages managers: npm (CSS/JavaScript), Bower (Web), pip (Python),

All of use the package manager to install programs.

There is only one repository. It is composed of entirely free software.
There is programming language package manager
What?

Yes, we know. What do you want us to say about it?
Thankfully, the amount of non-free software in those is very low, and the
vast majority of people doesn't install any using them.
We have a related bug filed here

We need free version of them to improve the quality of works from the
user to the programmers by invoking free version.
I'd help a bit as well if I can (can I?:)
Now, I think Quidam should make it official.

Can anyone offer any pointers?

I misunderstood the spec or is it just not adhered to at all?
It just not adhered to. I would not say at all though.
I have just discovered a new version of that standard was released 47 days

If you are just wanting to back up/copy of your computer, on the same hdd,
which defeats the purpose imo. Use clonezilla with another partition?
the destination of the clone / backup is immaterial if it is an iso that can
be easily copied.
I would prefer to clone or create a distro

I'm a total noob to Trisquel specifically, a relative noob to GNU/linux since

I think you are pretending to be more noob then you really are. Do all these
computers you want to install trisquel on have the same exact hardware?
Otherwise cloning is not your answer...
thanks that is really helpful, should be prominently linked to in every

i suspect from a quick scan that it is not well adhered too though, which
probably explains some of my confusion. I think less than half of
applications I have installed have ended up in /opt for example.

You can export the list of packages installed on your system with the

I agree, noscipt whitelisting is much more efficient.
If you start to mess with the system files, you will enter great troubles.
