how about using vrms and the trisquelize script to remove all the non-free
components from that system? I know we can't isntall trisquel packages into
it, because of the different architecture, but maybe removing the non-free
components would be enough? Ubuntu is the basis for Trisquel after

I would also add Performous, if you like karaoke.

Does anyone here play Performous?
If so, would you guys like to share/trade songs with the time file already

I don't even get to play SuperTuxKart. My laptop can't handle it without the

From the looks of it, I think blocking port 53 should be enough. BUT not
sure.
Does that apply only to Magic Banana's method, or yours too?
Also, does that solve the "problem" of using Torbirdy, and when you click a

Don't be :)
I am just hoping someone will actually help me too.
I am glad your issue is now solved :)

Could it mean a problem with Trisquel repo??
"Tor" installed from the repos is merely the service itself. You would have
to configure a browser of your own to use with it.
"Tor Browser Bundle" is a stand-alone package downloaded from TorProject.org
which you run without installing anything. I don't know how to make it

Hey,
I have a popcorn hour a-100. It's a media player that can, apparently,

are shared in that network.
I have connected the laptop to the player (directly, cable from laptop to

I can agree with the principle, but i think it's silly to have more lines in

I will probably go with the do what the fuck you want license :P
Thanks to everyone who replied!
Well, I am not sure what happened, I tried lembas' suggestion, bash -c

eventually got it to work.

Maybe this can help.
Remove the "splash" word in that line if you see it fit.
Don't forget to sudo update-grub / sudo update-grub2 (I am not sure which one
is the right one, so I do both, lol).
Also in my case I think I had to run
sudo update-initramfs -u -K all

Not really. It runs the script when I double click the file, but if I drag
the file to the lower panel, creating a "shrotcut", clicking it will just

I can't believe I will really have to put my scripts into a specific folder

Thanks for the help.
Indeed, I am using the standard Trisquel DE, gnome 3 fallback mode.
I just right clicked the script file, permissions, allow this to be run as

If i double click it or try to use it from a launcher, it opens in gedit.
Did it.
I wish you the best and hope you keep going with the project!
I have considered in the past going to OpenBSD (since it was considered a

some speculation about a backdoor) lead me away.

That's a fucked up situation... While in terms of "watching video" we already
have html5 replacing flash, when it comes to websites built with flash it is
a different story.
I can't really help you, but hope someone will be able to.
Wish you the best.
I have read the manual but don't understand how that will work with a live

Thanks!
Thank you both lembas and onpon4.
Thanks! Any idea if curl can do the same? I really could use it, and have
tried in the past but never got it to work.
How to do that with a live streaming? Like an m3u8 or something like that?
Only way I know is down-voting. But it feels like the same tool is used for
too many different things already...
Thanks! That allowed me to access the 3.4 kernel.
However I am running it right now and still can't get access to native

Maybe I have to remove/install something else, since this system was

That change is supposed to give hardware acceleration without proprietary

I see.
HOWEVER... should I do what was suggested in the comment above? Will my
graphics work better (at least in 2D), than if I just use the standard,
default Trisquel installation configs?
Because even if it is just 2D, it's still good to have my hardware working at

Hello.
Thanks for the reply.
Actually, if I am not mistaken, GRUB always appears when I boot, I have a

I tried using the shift key on boot, but it gave me nothing

How do you configure Linux-Libre with Grsec? I mean, which settings do you

So I am curious as to which settings you use.

So true...
Sorry, but I added the key, edited sources.list, but the only linux-libre

maybe the problem is that I am trying to downgrade a package??
How can I solve this?
Hi,
I have installed Trisquel 7, but I am getting some issues:
1. I can't use the Text Mode Install. Unless I connect to the internet, it
won't allow me to go beyond the "choosing mirror" option. I have tried to go
back and forth, but it seems like unless I get internet connection, I can't
Hi.
Thanks, that actually worked! synaptic wasn't showing 3.4 but apt actually
did it.
Now the problem I am facing is that even after I installed both kernel and
headers, and updated grub, it still isn't showing :(
Grub only shows the old kernel... I even checked here
No one here uses full disk encryption? How does it work for you?
Hum yes, I think I remember something like that back in Ubuntu 10.04
Now that you mention it I remember yes. But still, I don't like it this
way...
In "User accounts" my account is marked as "Administrator". AND something
funny happened, I actually unlocked the options (using my password)
What happens if instead of "sudo" you try to use "su"? Do you get
root/administrator permissions with your password anyway?
Yeah, I eventually found it. I know it is probably a "feature" for visually
impaired people, but the voice is still very irritating. Lol.
Anyway, I could really use some help with the other questions, I am a total
loss :(
If I really have to connect to the internet during install
No, I mean the "Text Mode Install", or "Expert install". Don't remember how
is it spelled. I am not confusing with the netinstall ;)
Btw, thanks a lot for all the replies, very useful information!
The explanation on sudo vs su was right on! I will later decide how I will
handle things.
Ok, so to answer myself, regarding point 2 (not being able to input password
without linux giving me output messages) here is the solution I found:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="console=tty12"
Now all is black until it asks for the
Thanks for posting the question and the answer. One question of mine: does it

choosing a separate partition for swap, home and system) ?? Or can it be in
the same partition and it will just encrypt the directory (dunno
Thanks!!
I am one of the unfortunate souls who have a Radeon GPU, and this is really a
life saver. I saw your reply to my post on the other thread but couldn't get
back to you before I saw this. I will certainly use it!
Keep up the good work!
The PAE thing is unimportant in amd64 right?
Sorry, missed your earlier post. Why, thank you, yes I am ;-)
And yes, exactly that! I think giving a RYF badge to a computer merely
because it supports libreboot, is... short sighted. What will the FSF do when
a computer comes out with more free components? Award a "Super RYF" ?
That is not
After installing Trisquel 7, and installing the 3.4 kernel, how can I remove
the older kernel? I don't want to just make it disappear from the list of
options that GRUB gives me, I want to really "uninstall" it from the system.
Thanks for the reply!
Here is the outpup you asked:

However, and maybe I am being slow on this one, but... Why did the older

I knew of that. It would be awesome if Trisquel did the same thing, but I
don't think the project can handle it right now (the immense amount of work
it requires is prohibitive).
However, maybe trying to ask Ruben to get apt-transport-tor in the
repositories would be a nice idea. Think it's
Thanks for the explanation. I thought it could be something like that but
wasn't sure.
I couldn't agree more.
So newer kernels mean better NVidia support, but worse AMD support right?
VPN's are not safe. No one will go to prison for you. Tor is the way to go.
Decentralized and with no central point of failure.
Is kernel 3.2 still supported?
So, we have some options until 2016... after that we are gonna need the patch
in a workable condition... damn...
Is the PPA managed by the Document Foundation themselves?
Usually I only use software from the repos OR when it's very specific
software downloaded from the original developer website (the Tor Browser
being an example of it, which is really cool seeing as now they have a auto

Have you noticed improvements in terms of speed (booting and general usage)
and compatibility with MS Office?
I am still trying to decide if I will use the PPA or not.
I read a recent blog post from Apache saying they would like to have

Good news. BUt still waiting for:
1. a low priced computer to come out with free software support
2. a laptop that has more than just Libreboot, I want a fully free machine

Did this ever get solved? I would like to do the same thing.
Just tried Trisquel 7 live DVD.
Couldn't get the resolution to the usual 1366x738 that I always used (both in
Debian and previous Trisquel instalations). Only gave me 4:3 options (I think
it was 1024x something...).
I noticed the video driver was identified as:

from memory, PlayOnLinux is free software (same as WINE) and it even supports
only the installation of the game if you have the original CD (it won't work
with cracks or something like that).
Now, just like WINE is basically a tool to run windows software in linux,
PlayOnLinux does the same
All that being said, I think there is a project called PlayOnLinux that is
kinda like "wine for games". Check it out, I remember in my earlier days of
Linux world, that I wanted to play some games and discovered that project, it
seemed to have improved support for commercial games.
Dunno if
Where do you prefer to get LibreOffice? From Trisquel repos (older version,
presumably more stable but less features) or from their own website, which
has a deb package that can install itself like a charm (newer, maybe with
some undiscovered bugs but more features).
Or since I am asking,
Admittedly I don't do a lot with Office suites. Usually just need to open
some documents that people send me. Which is sometimes a problem, when I have
an important document that I need to use correctly (stuff like CVs, legal
documents that need to be returned, etc) I need the best
Also, I like my all my programs to be fast. LibreOffice seems to improve
booting times with each new release. Was very pleased with the improvement
from 3 to 4 and was wondering how it would be now in 5.
Hi all.
So I am going to give Trisquel another try.
I have some questions before I proceed:
1. I have Debian 7.8 installed with full disk encryption. Is there a way to
format the entire partition and install Trisquel without losing the
encryption already in place? It took almost 24 hours to
Thanks for your reply tomlukeywood!
I have seen the work you have been doing for freedom, keep up the good work!
Thanks for your detailed reply!
1. That's what I thought too. Sigh... I will have to lose some time then.
2. So, if I just use the Belenos repository I will get security updates, but
no newer versions. For that I need the backports. But where do these
backports come from? Ubuntu or Debian?
Thanks for the clarifications.
I will maybe try and compile freenetbootin once I get my Trisquel install
done :)
In your experience (and other people's too) the Trisquel Belenos repository
(without backports) is basicay equal to Debian 8, or does it have newer
versions (for stuff like
Does that still requires proprietary software?
I see in the second link that AllWinner boards are capable of VP8 decoding,
does that mean with only proprietary drivers/firmware or any other software
too?
Thanks.
Thanks for the info!
One question: when they do release the source code, what do we get? I mean,
is it in AllWinner's hands to give us the code that will allow 3D
acceleration for example? Or is it only a matter of drivers and not firmware
for example?
Thanks again.
I'm sorry, but what do you mean that The concerns/issues with AllWinner have
been resolved. ?
As far as I know, the AllWinner company is still violating the GPL... A
couple weeks/months ago they pretended to release new source code but it had
(again) binary blobs inside.
If I am wrong,
I think that restriction is acceptable. You can run the software for any
purpose but it is not OK to run it in a stolen computer, correct? So that
would be OK for the 4 freedoms I think.
Disable LibreJS and try again.
You could give him a break and tell him to install unetbootin from the repos,
its a lot easier for a newbie :-P
I know you did a good job with freenetbootin but c'mon... unetbootin is not
that bad :-P
Usually if something is in Debian's main repo it will be in Ubuntu's and
Mint's and Trisquel's repos as well.
If i am wrong please correct me :)
Well, you are lucky your wifi card is working (many people had to buy a USB
dongle).
And if you were to play games with 3D and such, you would find that ATI are
useless in the free world.
Now I agree with what you said about the FSF. They seem to do SOME good, but
I don't see them doing
Nothing, I was just mentioning that yes, SVG pics can be dangerous maybe the
