MagicYou are so right...arrgghhh, one of these days, I will get that
Linux habit out of my head and only say GNU/Linuxor better yet just GNU.
Questions:
Do you still have gnome-panel in your system via apt-get or synaptic?
What happens when you type gnome-panel into your terminal (without quotes
of course)?
I know Crunchbang Linux is not a Libre Distro., based on Debian Stable with
openbox and alot of custom scripts, however, I include this forum link where
the developer (corenominal) announces the end of the distro., as food for
thought for all small distros. Crunchbang was around for over 10
Excellent discovery TomLuke...I never noticed the Chinese mirrors before!
That should be all he needs.
Ni hao Rocket,
I would not recommend it, but in theory it should be possible. Most Libre
systems use scripts to remove the non-free software and documentation, would
be alot of work to do this program by program.
Ruben, perhaps Trisquel could offer a mirror in Hong Kong or Taiwan?
Just a thought but if you right click on the panel (where it should be) and
click properties, then background, is it checked for none use system
theme or solid color, if solid color, make sure the transparency setting
is not too low or it will be invisible or transparent.
Amilo said: I am coming from a Mac and do like OS X for it's usability. Then
I once tried Ubuntu with Unity but I quickly figured out that it isn't as
free as thought.
You may want to consider modifying the gnome setup so you only have one panel
at the top (task bar etc...)and add
+1 for Lyx/LaTex, you could do it with LibreOffice and use a combination of
writer and draw, however, Lyx is designed for projects like yours, even
writing books and screenplays etc...
Scribus is a worthy project as well but can require a bit more tinkering.
Agreed with an off topic section, but this post is by no means troll-hole
quality.

Currently use Brother HL2270DW, don't use their drivers, just use the
following under CUPS: Generic ~PCL Laser
Works great!
HP printers tend to be the easiest to setup most of them are automagic,
however, I think Brother is a little more fair with their ink/toner, HP is
becoming very DRM
LMAO at the picture you included!!! +1 for the picture alone!
Interesting article from ars, apparently 10% of the companies are paying
AdBlock Plus to whitelist their ads.
agreed about Adblock Edge, it is much better for total blocking, but also
very happy with Spyblock on IceCat and Abrowser.

Microsoft is just doing what they always do (Google and Apple as well), take
from Free/OpenSource and then patent it and close it off. I doubt it has
much to do with wanting Google out of Android.
They might mean the program is not in the repositories for Debian or Ubuntu.
You can download and compile or run the prepackages version, but there are no
.deb versions etc... Only trying mind read, but thats my guess.
I think Fedora has it in their yum package manager or as a .rpm, so
ESR is great for programs that want stability over latest and greatest,
similar to LTS with Ubuntu, or stable with Debian, LTS with Trisquel etc...
Schools, businesses etc..., are better served with ESR, also think ESR is a
better choice for Trisquel so Ruben does not have to spend so much
+1 for you...Perhaps in 20 years people will only say GNU and wonder what
Linux is/was...LOL. This would be especially true if GNU/Hurd is ever
universally adopted.
For Debian? If you search their repository you get:
You have searched for packages that names contain icecat in suite(s) stable,
all sections, and all architectures.
Sorry, your search gave no results
and the same for testing. Isn't the command, apt-get install..., unless you
meant
thank you Super!
Jaded, don't forget JWM (Joes window Manager) or just Openbox with tint2. I
have some good configs for both if interested.
PS: If you ever want to see an abusive forum, hang out in the main Debian
forum...geesh, they are brutal to newbies, and anyone not running pure
Debian. LOL
+1 for a color code system for comments and a spam button for trolls.
Also, agree this is one of the most pleasant forums, Crunchbang has a nice
forum as well, however, they are quite in favor of flash and other things
so
:)
I would like to see Trisquel keep both, for different purposes. Personally,
I like IceCat for daily browsing and most internet use, however, I prefer a
separate browser for private online matters (shopping etc...), and Abrowser
fits that need perfectly. Midori is too unstable still,
Came across a very good video on YouTube explaining Claws-Mail and how to
setup it up properly. He is using the Windows version, however, it is the
same process for Linux.

There is a webm version if you have unplug, not sure how to post
Never used it, but this looks interesting, it is GPL for the source code.

There is also Jitsi with LGPL, https://jitsi.org/
Supertramp, you almost recreated Trisquel mini. :)
Really nice wallpaper!
of course...lazy typing. :)
Found this response from Ruben on reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/trisquel/comments/2jxaxs/what_is_the_difference_between_abrowser_and_icecat/
this is great news. Thank you for sharing!
I think they would be better served creating a separate package for MIPS,
similar to Arch (I think). Iceweasel does recommend non-free addons, it uses
the same addons as standard Firefox, even directs you to the same addon page.
Hey MagicBanana,
Thank you for the insightful reply...This may just make your day, I made the
switch back to Trisquel as main OS. :)
Always, enjoy your posts, keep it up!
I think MIPS is the culprit there. I know they are having some difficulty
with Iceweasel and MIPS for gNewSense 4 alpha...For some reason they are not
using IceCat, but rather tweaking Iceweasel for added security and
privacy...Personally, I like having IceCat and Iceweasel...daily browsing
Regarding Ubuntu becoming like Windows and Apple, the corporate mentality, in
particular Shuttleworth's admitted dictatorial attitude, that the direction
of the Distro. will be his decision...Steve Jobs, Bill Gates etc.., rather
then community driven. Also, the spyware/ad-ware hidden in the
Outstanding interview!
Glad Ruben is in charge of IceCat, perhaps this will become the new standard
across the various GNU/Linux distros, completely free or otherwise. Would
like to see Debian adopt this browser as an additional option.
What are your thoughts about Trisquel, perhaps going
Using this thinking, then all of the lesser GNU/Linix distros should abandon
ship and only support the largest 3, 4 or 5 distos?
gNewSense is not deprecated, 4.0 is based on Debian 7, and has backports
etc... When 4.0 is up, then work will start immediately on 5.0 based on Deb.
8.

I think another outlook could be:
If you like Ubuntu but want a Libre version then Trisquel is for you, or if
you want newer but not the latest software.
If you want the bleeding edge, or close to it then Parabola.
But, if you do not trust Ubuntu or Canonical, and prefer stability over
gNewsense team decided to proceed with Ucclia so it would be a natural
transition from 3.0 Parkes, easier migration for the folks using Parkes.
Alot of work was already done on Ucclia and they did not want to just scrap
it.
As soon as 4.0 is official (no longer beta), then work will begin
You could try an old version of gNewsense 3.0 or even v.2. I would imagine
an older version of Trisquel with net install would work as well. Just pick
the bare minimum to run the system.
Crunchbang Linux is an option as well, it is based on Debian Stable, but you
will have to disable the
LOL, so true. This is clearly what I meant. Compared to Debian stable and
the Libre distros, Trisquel is bleeding/cutting edge, while still maintaining
some stability.
I would say it is the best Libre Distro (or at least near the top) for those
that want the most current programs for the
Not totally accurate but point taken.
Trisquel being based on Ubuntu does pull from Ubuntu LTS which is mainly
Debian Testing, not Stable. Therefore, Trisquel's packages are more recent.
This is one reason why many people recommend Trisquel or Ubuntu for those who
want more recent
Osmo works great for me. You can set up one time tasks and recurrant.
openstreetmap is a very good option, you may also like marble or marble-qt
(no kde depends.) both are an apt-get away. Marble includes a virtual globe
and openstreetmap access from your desktop.
If you are using Trisquel mini or LXpanel then simply right click on the
clock then click digital clock settings.
for 24 our format with date in International/Military format, should be:
Clock Format: %R
Tooltip Format: %d%b%Y(%a)
This will give you a 24 hour time format with the date listed
I've had good success with gFTP. Much lighter and more responsive than
filezilla.

+1 for claws-mail with plugins (bogofilter, mail archiver, mailmbox, pgp,
fancy html, RSSyl [feed reader]. Osmo is a good alternative to Lightning,
much better than vcalendar plugin.
Would like to see claws be the default email client, on Trisquel mini
sylpheed is default, but IMHO claws
Finally made the complete jump to Trisquel (7.0-Mini). Longtime Windows
user, then made the switch to Ubuntu, hated Unity and Ubuntu spyware, so
switched to Debian Stable (Wheezy) XFCE-LXDE-net install with Openbox, then
played around with Crunchbang Linux (Debian optimized for Openbox),
If you are using Trisquel because of the FSF philosophy/ideals then it does
not make sense adding non-free software or blobs. Better to use the WiFi
adaptors as suggested. If the philosophy does not matter to you, then why
not just switch to another distro.
Note: this is coming from
Any thoughts on migrating from Xubuntu 13.10 to Trisquel 6.0, or is the
response the same as other non 12.04 derivatives of Ubuntu?
Actually started with Ubuntu 12.04 then around 13.04 migrated to Xubuntu,
using a similar method of adding and deleting packages and DE's etc... Very
pleased
