This interviewer was good.
Bomb-interviews don't work well with Stallman. You have to let him speak. If
necessary, do some editing afterwards -- but do let him speak. A live
interview with Stallman doesn't work either. I would go as far as eliminate
the role of the interviewer totally.
I mostly use graphical programs, and when I do use a command-line program,
it's usually only because there's not a graphical equivalent. The one
exception is Nano, my preferred command-line text editor; I prefer to use
Nano for entering commit messages.

Is the BIOS time OK? There is a battery on the mother board: it can die.
Do you use "Network Time" in "Date & Time" (in the "System Settings")?
The basic GNU text-processing commands (I work with large logs): less, head,
tail, cat, tr, wc, cut, paste, comm, join, sort, uniq, grep.
And GNU AWK simply is wonderful when the work cannot be simply done by piping
some of the commands above.

I've been intending to try ratpoison this weekend. One concern I had was
regarding the browser. Of course I could use lynx, but a browser is one of
the most important GUI programs I use. I might as well not even run X
Windows!
So now that you mention Conkeror, I am excited to try it all
I do not use the command line, rather, I use Ratpoison. It is a tiling window
manager that does as little with X as is possible. It has specific
key-bindings designed not to conflict with Emacs. This basically feels like
running the X Window System from the command line rather than the
To be fair, Xubuntu is also not very good in terms of consuming RAM by
default. The live CD has lots of GNOME dependencies and applications, meaning
it is just a bit bloated. If you want to see Xfce really shine (if memory is
an issue as your post seems to suggest), try the Debian Xfce Live

It's hard for me what it is people see in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 that is so much
matter then Xubuntu 16.04. It also use 100MB more ram in clean install. But I
understand that MATE is in general a better alternative. It's a good

That is a good idea. But it begs the question, why not just use Xfce and have
the Trisquel icon theme?

I would say it is not a "joke", just poorly designed in some respects. Thunar
from Xfce is pretty much the

Yes, I would recommend the ar5bhb92/ar9280.
Here's the results I got when I experimented with different Atheros wifi

You only need to keep the latest kernel and, for safety, a previous that
works well for sure (because you have used it for weeks, with all your
hardware). Other versions can be removed from the package manager.

Yes, of course. Use a CD-R instead. It's reusable and works around most USB
caveats. I don't remember a CD/DVD ever failing if the ISO is checked against
hash sums. Unfortunately, these days a built-in optical drive is a rarity. An
external drive is bulkier than a USB key.
