[Trisquel-users] Bright control on Trisquel

2017-04-29 Thread eloi . igor
Today I installed Trisquel LXDE on a old laptop. There is apparently no
bright controller. Nor does the keys assembled with functions (raise and
shrink sound, control bright, switch wireless) seems to work. It has to be
possible to make em work. How should I start? Never used LXDE before,
thought.

Please note that I've no intention of attacking the project. I backed it-
everything from a demonstrable commitment to liberty and environmental
conscience to the disproportionately impressive concept of internal USB
ports- and am thus far satisfied with Luke's updates on progress, even if
that does mean delays. Nor do I wish to condemn ThinkPenguins' involvement-
this was definitely worth the investment, and I am grateful for your
willingness to support a great concept.

What I was requesting was some guidance as to how I would find the actual
designs published. I'm not greatly vested in what has and what has not-
hardware liberty is not a significant issue for me, except as pertaining to
firmware- but I've yet to actually see anything. I'm simply asking if
somebody could advise me on where I would look, so that I (and perhaps
others) can understand exactly what is being discussed.

2017-04-29 Thread mkl80
I had talked about this problem in the forum more than once. But please
permit me to repeat:

The wireless thing is big factor for people to go away from Trisquel.
We are told always the solution: buy in think penguim a wireless card, but if
the prices are too high for our wallets, is there not any other solution? yes
there are, liberate and condensate the knowledge on how to get around that
big problem by other means:
1. A site or document with update wireless cards that do function on
Trisquel;
2. that site or document could contain the brands of computers and laptops
that function with no problem with Trisquel;
3.That site or document could contain also information on how to get around
the wireless problem by other means (code, installing a specific program in
order to avoid, get around or isolate that specific problem, or else).

If we continue to ignore this problem it is a big exit door for newbies and
people who being in Trisquel want to switch to a more modern laptop.

have said that before on at least two ocasions.
I am now switching for Debian for that reason, but still using trisquel on
the old computer.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquell/Disk Encryption Problem

2017-04-29 Thread boarts4
Unfortunately when I put my USB drive into the computer it doesn't give me
any option to do anything with it. Everything just remains the same in GRUB
as I described above.

I'm pretty certain that I didn't trick myself or mistype my password. I was
very careful and took my time while typing into the computer and I wrote it
down carefully as well making sure that there would be no confusion with the
font when I wrote it down.

The only thing I can think of is that there is a slight tweak in the keyboard
setup but I doubt that even. I tested the keyboard out when selecting the
layout and I selected the default English layout. I probably should've
tested the password out when I tested the layout but I didn't. I'm almost
certain I tried all the numbers and letters on the main part of the keyboard
at least but I did not use shift to test out all of the main keys I
mentioned. Everything seemed fine during the test and my keyboard is set up
pretty standard (comparable to most if not all keyboards I have come across).

Not sure about that...
..but the trivial answer would be that either you ACTUALLY mistype your
password, OR you tricked yourself when writing down the password, and the one
you noted down isn't exactly the one you created..

Can you try to reinstall everything with a simpler password, just to make
sure it works?
If it does, you can then do a third install with your actual strong password,
making sure you actually use the right one..

Also, when reinstalling pay attention that the keyboard layout you provide
during the installation actually matches the physical layout of your
keyboard!

Sorry, I don't have any other clue in mind..

[Trisquel-users] The Replicant project calls for the Android SDK to be included in Trisuqel. Can you help?

2017-04-29 Thread fil . bergamo

Hello everyone,

here's the announcement:
http://blog.replicant.us/2017/04/there-wont-be-a-replicant-6-0-sdk-because-there-is-already-something-better/

Basically, the Replicant project won't be maintaining a libre version of the
Android SDK anymore.
The reason is that it will be included in the next Debian release by default,
so it makes no sense to waste time and resources to the same job.

The hope is for Trisquel to follow up on that, and to include all the free
fundamental parts of the SDK in the upcoming Trisuqel 8.

Please, read the announcement and join the effort, if you can!
Replicant people will be available for helping, if required.

Happy hacking,

Fil

It also says, "No key available with this passphrase," before the part where
it says, "mdadm: CREATE group disk not found." There is also a list of
commands before and after those two lines I just mentioned but they don't
mean anything to me.

[Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquell/Disk Encryption Problem

2017-04-29 Thread boarts4
When I tried to install Trisquel from a USB drive I had no problems until I
tried to start the system. During installation I chose to encrypt my hard
drive and I set a password making sure they matched and I wrote it down
before I actually typed it. I used 20 characters of a mixture of upper and
lowercase case, numbers, and symbols. But when I start Trisquel from GRUB
using the Trisquel GNU/Linux option it asks for my passphrase after running
through about half a screen to a full screen of commands I'm not familiar
with and I have entered it exactly as it is probably a dozen times but every
time I'm told:

cryptsetup: cryptsetup failed, bad password or options?

It then asks me again until a third time of unsuccessful login at which point
it says the same thing but then, "done." It then says a whole screen full of
things that I'm not familiar with until it says, " mdadm: CREATE group disk
not found." It will repeat this skipping a line each time as what appears to
be forever until I shut down my computer using the power button.

If I then use Ctrl+alt+del it restarts my computer into GRUB. I tried the
other two options in GRUB (Advanced options for Trisquel GNU/Linux and System
setup) but when it asks for my username and password and I enter it, nothing
happens it just takes me back to the GRUB screen.

Can someone give me hope of unlocking my computer again? I don't understand
what is going on. Is it possible that the problem lies in my non free
hardware?

This link you've provided is not for a WiFi card but an HECI controller (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_Embedded_Controller_Interface), which has
nothing to do with your WiFi card.

So we need to ignore that particular h-node link, since that isn't a WiFi
card, and start over from scratch by asking: What is the make and model of
your WiFi card? The output of lscpci should say.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Privacy US law now allows collecting data without consent

2017-04-29 Thread greatgnu

Either bridges or VPN before Tor.
You connect to the VPN and after that you open the TorBB. That will hide Tor
usage from the ISP. The ISP will know you use a VPN and will only see
encrypted traffic the whole time. I highly recommend everyone to use a decent
VPN all the time, it's the bare minimum nowadays if you want to maintain
**some** privacy.
Again, at least when using TorBB for important stuff - don't allow
javascript. The Firefox browser is huge and it's attack vector really doesn't
need further increase via javascript..

As far as blocking the ISP this works for all your devices:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-mini-vpn-router-tpe-r1100

It won't stop websites from tracking you or anything like that... it's mainly
to hinder an ISP from spying on you where you don't need a super private
setup. If you've got the possibility of government agents spying on you and
your in a scenario where you need more protection Tor and Tor bridges are
probably the best thing to utilize. Tor bridge will probably keep your ISP
from detecting that you are using Tor. It's not perfect- but it's better than
non-bridge mode. If it doesn't matter if your ISP knows you use Tor then your
best bet is to not use bridge mode.

Without understanding the background and routine abuse by police of media in

2017-04-29 Thread chris
Yea- I'm aware. Nobody has had harsher penalties applied as of yet so if they
did it would be quite a case considering the very meaning contradicts the
accusation and labelling. Free stater implies participation in the Free State
Project which is a migration of those who believe in freedom and liberty to
New Hampshire to partake in peaceful change. The very foundations of which
are nobody should utilize violence against peaceful people. Neither the state
nor oneself where there has been no violence. That is called the
non-aggression principle and it's the bedrock principle of those
participating in the Free State Project. This is almost pacifist philosophy
if not for the belief in the right to use violence in self defence. ie
someone aims a gun at you and threatens to kill you you'd be perfectly within
your right to return fire killing the other person. The state comparatively
is dependant on violence to exist. If you don't do what it says you will be
incarcerated even if you've not committed any act of violence yourself. Even
the mere presence of a police officer's statements could be reasonably
constructed as an act of violence as failure to obey an illegal order is a
crime.

Well, I'm not sure I'd say EOMA68 isn't libre. It's available for others to
utilize as well in their own device designs. Though that said we can start
talking about certain aspects of what is being manufactured. There is the
Libre Tea Computer Card. That is going to get RYF'd once there is a finished
run and the cards can be submitted to the FSF for certification- which is a
condition of RYF certification. The laptop housing and the desktop housing
can also be RYF'd. Certain internal issues at the FSF and how it operates
have made the crowd funding campaign a bit challenging and tct is taking
advantage of that to claim it's not libre. I can't help that the FSF did not
have any means of certifying it RYF prior to the finished product being
manufactured. We attempted to get them to do that- but it's just not how
they've setup RYF. Instead they made a statement of support and looked at and
hand some of the hardware. The prototypes were unfortunately damaged and not
properly reviewed. However those most apt to and capable of reviewing the
hardware for RYF are those involved in LibreCMC's development and working on
the designs (Luke).

2017-04-29 Thread chris
The hardware hasn't been manufactured yet so of course the final designs
aren't released, but that isn't what makes something libre hardware anyway
within the context of free software. The hardware which has been designed is
not dependant on any proprietary pieces. That's the key thing that makes it
libre hardware. Anyway. The designs for the hardware have been released (to
the extent that it's prototypes have been manufactured, even if never
shipped, as they are prototypes). Parabola GNU/Linux has been demo'd on the
prototypes and there is code for everything here far above and beyond any
other laptop on the market. The idea it's not librea hardware is just
propaganda by someone whose not got freedom in mind, but a personal vendetta
against me. tct is attacking EOMA68 because of that vendetta because I've
funded and supported it via ThinkPenguin.
