Re: [Trisquel-users] make a free software version of google earth?
Wait, why doesn't Marble use Landsat images? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Landsat They aren't as high resolution as the commercial ones, but much better than the ones used currently.
Re: [Trisquel-users] make a free software version of google earth?
Yeah, I use Marble, but the satellite images are very low resolution. They are from NASA, and there isn't really anything else because of the copyright problem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant 6.0 released
Just out of curiosity, would these devices work in Japan? My fiancee and I are looking at moving there next year, and I don't know if our existing phones would work there. It would be nice to have a mobile device running 100% free software to use once we get there.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
i have removed the mate-desktop package since it does not work. i tried to add the ppa but it says error, please check the ppa name*. i am currently installing the xfce4 but the xfce4-sessions is not installing properly, dpkg erro code 1 unmet depecdencies to 4.10 i am currently doing a apt-get dist-upgrade, then going to try apt-get -f install after the dist upgrade
Re: [Trisquel-users] make a free software version of google earth?
The main challenge to replacing Google Earth is not the software, but the mapping data and satellite images. OpenStreetMap have done a good job of crowdsourcing map data for a libre Google Maps replacement, and their site becomes more useful all the time. Activists in some countries have convinced their governments to release the mapping data they hold, on behalf of the public, under a license compatible with OSM. For example, all the data in OSM for Aotearoa (NZ) where I live is official government supplied mapping data. So mapping data is a relatively solved problem, but to create a libre replacement for Google Earth, we would need to find suppliers of satellite imagery who could be convinced to license it under a free culture license. It's not impossible, but it's a challenge. Are there are publicly-owned satellites that can create Earth images? Perhaps we could find a hip venture capitalist like Elon Musk whose company has satellites and would be willing to supply imagery for a Libre Earth?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I think openmailbox is on the verge of death
The OMB user forum still seems to be down. One thing I don't understand is why they are still paying money for SSL certs instead of using Let's Encrypt certs. I've emailed them and mentioned it on the forum a few times over the last couple of years, but every year it is listed as one of the costs they are fundraising for. Also, how do they end up paying 120 Euro for one domain name?!? I pay the equivalent of about 12 Euro a year for Disintermedia.net.nz. Are they not running their own DNS server for their subdomains?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Riseup does not works in Icedove
I had an issue with riseup and claws mail in the past due to the poorly written, I guess obsolescent guide on claws they keep on their website.. but I never had any trouble at all with riseup and thunderbird/icedove. A few clicks and it should be all auto-set. Make sure you follow this guide. If you do, and still have issues, you should definitely throw them a mail. https://riseup.net/en/email/clients/thunderbird If there's anything you don't understand, ask and an answer will be provided to you, if possible, of course. cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] How would I go about launching Icecat from firetools through a tar?
Sure, mate. Firejaillino can sanboxino everything, and I mean **any** thing :) Basically what you need to do each time a sandboxed application isn't working is edit it's profile file to whitelist the impeding entry. In this case /etc/firejail/thunderbird # Firejail profile for Mozilla Thunderbird # Users have thunderbird set to open a browser by clicking a link in an email # We are not allowed to blacklist browser-specific directories noblacklist ~/.gnupg mkdir ~/.gnupg whitelist ~/.gnupg noblacklist ~/.thunderbird mkdir ~/.thunderbird whitelist ~/.thunderbird noblacklist ~/.cache/thunderbird mkdir ~/.cache/thunderbird whitelist ~/.cache/thunderbird include /etc/firejail/firefox.profile What you see here is the **default** whitelisting of .gnupg (in order for the mail encryption to work) and the application's folder and cache folder (.thunderbird and /.cache/thunderbird). Now, with this default profile the thunderbird application should work flawlwessly. I assume you are not using thunderbird but icedove. If that is indeed the case you'll need to whitelist its folders. I use claws mails but if I remember the old icedove times, the folders are .icedove and /.cache/icedove.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Richard Stallman 2017 talk in Argentina
For me, that incident had a mix of causes: - Question being not handled correctly by RMS. - People pointing it out too late. - Organizers not asking which language the audience understands. And... My, that video is still on-line??? That's a shame for three people: - The uploader, because RMS asked him not to record/upload it. - RMS, although we can't really blame him, everyone has days of overwork. Besides, he seems to be one of the few free/libre software speakers that travels around giving speeches nowadays, this is probably why he is now suggesting people to become free/libre software speakers --- for me, I would go further and also suggest that such speakers try to pass our ideas correctly. - Free/libre software activists, because thanks to this video, people who don't know a free/libre software activist with which they can clarify things will probably assume bad things about RMS. Some people do know a free/libre software activist they can talk to --- or are in some group with such goal ---, and in these cases we can still explain things. -- - [[https://libreplanet.org/wiki/User:Adfeno]] - Palestrante e consultor sobre /software/ livre (não confundir com gratis). - "WhatsApp"? Re: [Trisquel-users] How do you use QuiteRSS with Tor?
No, the correct manual you should have pointed them is https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/TorifyHOWTO

Re: [Trisquel-users] Riseup does not works in Icedove
uups, in the title I put "does not works" when it's "does not work"
[Trisquel-users] Riseup does not works in Icedove
Hi, I'm new to riseup, I've set up my account in Icedove (Thunderbird based) and it worked for a short time, today it couldn't find the SMTP service because it's an "unknown domain" according to it, as I set it up as POP3, then I tried to do as IMAP, but it was worst, it didn't recognized the account! SO after all, I decided to see if it happened the same with the webmail, but it was like if nothing would have ever happened, so I'm really surprised, what's happening? Thanks. P.S.: If you ask "Why don't you ask for support to riseup directly?" I don't not because I don't want to but because I couldn't :( Looks like bad luck chases me... :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] How would I go about launching Icecat from firetools through a tar?
is there a way to do this for thunderbird as well? It doesn't seem to work in firetools and in firejail, it doesn't invoke my preset emails.
[Trisquel-users] Richard Stallman 2017 talk in Argentina
pinmari...@riseup.net wrote: Takuli13, RMS was obviously overtired (from travelling, jetlag, heat) and dissapointed by himself..it shows how much heart he puts into his conferences. personnaly i get more angry than him..! ;-) It's not clear from the video what happened. The video starts at about the time of the kerfuffle and nobody's perspective except rms' is mentioned clearly. I don't get the impression rms was disappointed at himself and I'm not sure there's clear reason for him to be disappointed in himself. Here's my guess at what happened: Richard Stallman (known as rms) speaks fluently in English, Spanish, and French. rms gives talks around the world, typically these talks are recorded and published on https://audio-video.gnu.org/. Before giving a talk, rms sends the talk organizers a list of his needs via email. rms had asked the audience in which language he should give a talk. Most of the audience said English was acceptable, so he spoke in English. Some of the audience complained that they couldn't understand him in English but they waited to raise this complaint until very late in the talk, well after the talk began (perhaps closer to the end of the talk), and well after rms had made points in the talk that one needs to understand in order to understand his conclusions. Therefore even if rms were to switch to another language mid-talk, the justifications for his conclusions would not be clear to those who didn't understand him to this point. When someone raised the issue of language to rms (presumably at some point during the talk), rms asked the audience again and noted that a small subset of the audience could not understand English. rms became angry that such a fundamental matter was being complained about and anyone was trying to renegotiate this so late in the talk. He also asked that this talk not be published (a request the publisher of this not-completely-in-context recording apparently did not honor). rms asked how he should continue and nobody in the audience responded, so there were no practical answers given as to how to continue so everyone there would understand him. rms repeated that at this late point in the talk continuing on in a language some could not understand would constitute "failure". Was the language not agreed to before the talk began? If the language was agreed to, was the language not made clear to the audience before the talk began? Surely once the talk began people who don't speak that language would have immediately noticed this and raised this as an issue right from the start. Did they not choose to do this? I don't agree with rms that this is a failure, but I don't think he handled this well. It seems like a failure to communicate clearly on the part of some audience members who should have conveyed early that they don't understand the talk in the chosen language. This could have been rectified immediately, particularly with a speaker fluent in multiple languages. It's hard to tell what happened, but it's possible rms should have dismissed the audience members that didn't convey their preferred language early and continued on in whatever language he'd already given the bulk of the talk.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Richard Stallman no Brasil e na Argentina
Gostaria muito de ir, mas não poderei. Alguma chance das palestras serem filmadas e distribuídas? Eu realmente iria gostar muito de assisti-las.

[Trisquel-users] Re : how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
GNOME seems to be added to the login wheel if one installs the package 'gdm'. I am certain I was using GNOME Shell with LightDM... although that may be back in Trisquel 6's times. Installing GDM enabled additional features: locking the screen and receiving notifications on the locked screen.
Re: [Trisquel-users] WWAN USB stick for laptop
Wha you're looking for is a USB modem. He's confused and thinks about a wifi dongle.
Re: [Trisquel-users] WWAN USB stick for laptop
are you sure that the model TP-LINK TL-WN722N is for HSPA, 3G, LTE...? there is also another model from the same company - TP-Link MA260: http://www.tp-link.com/la/products/details/cat-5090_MA260.html is this model fully supported? it hasnt to be plug and play but there should be a working installation way...
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?

Re: [Trisquel-users] WWAN USB stick for laptop
yep http://thinkpenguin.com/ or search on evilbay for TP-LINK TL-WN722N Had helpful experiences with thinkpenguin. got there nice duel band usb dongle :) served me well. They made it possible for us to have free firmware for a wifi chipset too. Theres other sellers too, like: https://tehnoetic.com
[Trisquel-users] Re : how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
Could be called a Frugal Install it has the bare minimum (pcmanfm, lxpanel, lxsession, openbox et xscreensaver), Aptitude is in Trisquel mininal so you can add a Package Manager and after what fits your needs..
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
I installed lxde-core. It's very minimal. No automounting of cd-roms for instance (must be done as root). Abrowser needs to be installed separately.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Replicant 6.0 released
The new release Replicant 6.0 incorporates the very needed security updates, a nicer and more modern graphical interface, and also it supports by default freedom-respecting external WiFi adapters! What better way for us at Technoethical to celebrate the new Replicant release than with the addition to our mobile devices catalog of the Note2 N7100 phone/tablet preinstalled with Replicant: https://tehnoetic.com/tet-n7100 Also, all our mobile devices now come preinstalled by default with Replicant 6.0. Each purchase also contributes with a donation to the Replicant project. :-) https://tehnoetic.com/mobile-devices Happy hacking everyone!
[Trisquel-users] WWAN USB stick for laptop
is there a wwan (wireless wide area network) usb stick that works fluently with gnu linux and only free software?

Re: [Trisquel-users] How do you get your books?
DuckDuckGo- probably not the kind of thing you were asking for, but it does the job adequately. To search for a specific file type, use f: followed by the file extensions (e.g. f:pdf).
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
As loldier & Magic Banana said just click on the Trisquel icon as you start a session. Trisquel 7 mini has by default Trisquel mini + LXDE + Openbox as desktops environments and is perfectly fine with adding Xfce. If you wish to have only one specific DE of your choice (those not proposed by Trisquel) , you can start a text mode install, install the base system, do your partitioning & then when comes to choose the DE you opt for Tasksel : At 'Select Software' choose Trisquel Console Enviroment , from there install what you need, as shown here https://trisquel.info/fr/wiki/construisez-votre-propre-version-de-trisquel
