Re: [Trisquel-users] Syncthing, your own (and really easy to install) Cloud
"As far as alternative names --- RABIES??" That was a joke, riffing off the name of RAID, which when you think about it should also be on your list of software terms with negative connotations, along with *anything* to do with computers that uses the words "master" and "slave". But I digress. I do think we could use RABIES when we talk about the proprietary services that are marketed using the buzzphrase "cloud", as in "those mercenary arseholes trying to sell you 'cloud' solutions are really just trying to give you RABIES (Redundant Array of Boxes Independent of Servers)" or "It may seem like GMail are giving you a convenient offsite 'cloud' solution for your organisational email, but it actually puts you email in RABIES", and so on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Syncthing, your own (and really easy to install) Cloud
"I was about to tell you how to install it. Then I read you are not going to install it anyway lol" I didn't say that. I would like to test SyncThing. That's why I asked you how you installed it.

Right now I cannot load Riseup's website, I'm not liking what's happening :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] PDF problems: Any way to evade installation of Adobe Reader? Urgent.
> XFA is a proprietary format for PDF forms, but it has nothing to do with DRM. Yes... and it also has nothing to do with the problem: > there is only an empty page with a note that Adobe Reader is necessary in order to view the document. This is what happens when a PDF is encumbered with Acrobat Reader's DRM feature.
Re: [Trisquel-users] PDF problems: Any way to evade installation of Adobe Reader? Urgent.
In my experience, documents with XFA forms usually work in Okular. They give a warning, but you can still fill in the forms, though they can't be saved in the document (Okular stores them in its dotfiles). I just print to PDF from Okular, which generally works fine.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Richard Stallman no Brasil e na Argentina
Você também notou que uma apresentação de Stallman segue, né? :-) Não parece essencial escrever que RMS não apoia o "open source" para apresentá-lo brevemente. English version: You have noticed as well that a presentation of Stallman follows, haven't you? :-) It does not look essential to write that RMS does not support "open source" to briefly present him.
[Trisquel-users] Re : What did I do wrong?
Can you log in a terminal? One of those you get by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 or Ctrl+Alt+F2 or ... or Ctrl+Alt+F6 at the graphical login screen. If so, it must be a problem with the keyboard layout in the graphical session. If not, do you know GRUB's password? If so, you can edit the boot line to add the "single" password and you will directly boot into a terminal, where 'passwd USER_NAME' (substitute "USER_NAME" by your actual login) will allow to define a new password. If you do not know GRUB's password, you can 'chroot' from a live system and then use 'passwd' as above.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What did I do wrong?
I've encountered that kind of problem in debian if my storage disk for home is 0 bytes free. Maybe you can chroot and login to root to add or change user password?
Re: [Trisquel-users] PDF problems: Any way to evade installation of Adobe Reader? Urgent.
> However, I am not a developer but a medical doctor and also a medical communications researcher. I neither have the resources nor the knowledge to engage in the fight as some of you have suggested. The libre software movement is never going to get anywhere if the only people who work toward it are software developers. Besides, you don't need to do everything. Just making it clear that the DRM they are using in these forms is unwelcome would be sufficient. More likely than not, DRM is being used because of ignorance or a misguided idea about "security", not malice. If enough people inform them of the problem, they may stop using the DRM. But it's pretty much guaranteed that no software developers will be doing this, because it's very unlikely that any software developer would also engage in scientific research. So if everyone in your position just decides to do nothing because they aren't software developers, then it's just not going to be solved. > I just need to do the work I need to do, and I would like to cooperate with the non-free software world. That's why you should make it clear that someone is getting in the way of you doing your work. Putting DRM on forms you need to fill out is not cooperative. It's obstructive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
I've just realised it this morning. It is done, the indicator is now added in the panel. Thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] PDF problems: Any way to evade installation of Adobe Reader? Urgent.
Thank you, everyone, for your swift replies and support in this issue. I have chosen not to fight for software freedom. I appreciate the Trisquel project and I feel honored to use the software some of you guys provide. (That's the reason why I am a member.) However, I am not a developer but a medical doctor and also a medical communications researcher. I neither have the resources nor the knowledge to engage in the fight as some of you have suggested. That's why I'm looking for a pragmatic solution: I use a friend's computer to connect to the internet and, yes, I'm also using Acrobat because obviously the organization I apply with uses complex PDF forms to organize their applications. I don't feel responsible to change their policy. However, I've already started to consider changing the distro -- back to Ubuntu, or to LinuxMint. The alternative would be to re-install Windows on my computer and have it parallel to Trisquel as /forest/ has suggested. (I just need to do the work I need to do, and I would like to cooperate with the non-free software world.) What are your thoughts on this matter? Which way would be a better support for free software development? ADFENO, I think your suggestion to drop the application unless the organization "cooperates" is a little misplaced in this context. Would you change career plans because your operating system is not able to process a file you need to submit? Or could you provide me with an alternative funding of around 2,500 EUR for active participation in an international conference (30%-chance of getting the fund, that is) which I can apply for with free software? Hope to read from you guys. Best regards Florian
[Trisquel-users] Re : Using .htaccess in Cpanel to block domains that pirate images
Has this something to do with If a directive is permitted in a .htaccess file, the documentation for that directive will contain an Override section, specifying what value must be in AllowOverride in order for that directive to be permitted
[Trisquel-users] Using .htaccess in Cpanel to block domains that pirate images
In simpler times I dealt with image pirates by substituting a jpg image of my copyright violation warning for the pirated image and replacing it with a renamed original image in the html code for the affected page. Once I substituted a picture of a roasted caterpillar that I found in a nut; it's still on the offending site. There are too many such images nowadays, so I have tried to edit my .htaccess file in cpanel, to which I can add new lines, one for each offending domain, whenever I check the "recent visitors" file in cpanel. I attempted to make use of the instructions posted here: http://www.whoishostingthis.com/blog/2011/03/04/hotlink-protection-cpanel/ Here's a truncated version of my .htaccess file, with sensitive information taken out: |RewriteEngine on |StuffThatWorks |order allow, deny |allow from all |/StuffThatWorks | |RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)mydomain01\.com/ [NC] |RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)MyDomain02\.com/ [NC] |RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)blockeddomain01\.info/ [NC,OR] |RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)blockeddomain02\.org/ [NC] |RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$ |RewriteRule \.(jpeg|jpg|htm|html)$ - [F] |deny from IP.address0001 |deny from IP.address0002 |... |deny from IP.address1567 So far, my changes (everything but the long list of "deny from IP.address") have had no effect at all. Is that because my syntax is wrong, or is it because the offenders are using redirects, etc. ?
[Trisquel-users] What did I do wrong?
I just did a 'downgrade' from Flidas to Belenos and now I can't get behind the login screen. My login is accepted (I get an 'invalid password, please try again' message when I enter a wrong one) but I am just directed to the same login screen. I have been using Flidas for a while and while I like it and think it is quite stable, I lack some menus and features. hence I wanted to 'downgrade' to Belenos. What I actually did was to (re-) install Belenos from a live usb. I kept my home and my swap partitions while I formatted the partition on which Flidas was installed, and installed Belenos on it. My best itiot shot is, that while upgrading is no problem regarding configuration files, 'downgrading' might. Now I am stuck with the login screen. What did I do wrong and how can I solve this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : Richard Stallman no Brasil e na Argentina
* English (en) Magic Banana, I have noticed that the introduction to the text says that "there's no need to present" Stallman, and I do know that at least here there is great number of people aware of differences between "free/libre software movement" and "open source development model", but I do have one suggestion to make: If you do know the organizers of the event in which Stallman will give his speech, make sure that full introduction is given. This is needed because people would otherwise confuse the two groups of proponents. Besides, I once saw a talk where Stallman complained due to the absense of introduction about him. - "WhatsApp"? Sadly, Replicant only supports GSM for now and I see that there are no GSM carriers in Japan: Quoting this travel guide: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2223.html "Most importantly, there is no GSM network in Japan, so GSM-only phones do not work."
[Trisquel-users] Re : how to install and set session of MATE, LXDE, XFCE?
i have removed the mate-desktop package Mate desktop package in Trisquel 7 repositary is not the entire desktop environment but a library with common API for various MATE modules i tried to add the ppa but it says error, please check the ppa name* You can folow the instructions here and it should work for you https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-mate Another way is to simply install Mate and only Mate is with https://urukproject.org/dist/en.html A very nice Mate respin version of Triquel 7.. xfce4_4.10.1 is available in the Trisquel 7 repos (no need for a PPA) Meta package.Make sure to add xfce4-indicator-pluggin that will enable Network-Manager in the panel. What unmet dependecies ? re-install the dependencie you may have removed while removing various packages Trisquel 8 is in Alpha so the possibility is not yet given to users to do a distribution upgrade,
