Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with OS after upgrade
> Purge removes too much, usually not only the package but things that depend > on the package so it will break your system by getting rid of too much > stuff. 'apt remove' also removes things that depend on the package. According to the apt man page, the only difference between remove and purge is the removal of config files. Purge doesn't remove additional packages. "Removing a package removes all packaged data, but leaves usually small (modified) user configuration files behind, in case the remove was an accident. Just issuing an installation request for the accidentally removed package will restore its function as before in that case. On the other hand you can get rid of these leftovers by calling purge even on already removed packages. Note that this does not affect any data or configuration stored in your home directory." To test this, I ran 'sudo apt remove pulseaudio', looked at the packages that would have been removed, cancelled, and then ran 'sudo apt purge pulseaudio' and compared. It's the same packages, none of which are system breaking when removed. The only packages that were not metapackages or directly related to pulseaudio that were removed are indicator-sound and indicator-sound-gtk2, which were restored by reinstalling trisquel and trisquel-recommended. > You probably won't be able to boot into your Desktop Environment. This is a risk of purging (or reomving) packages recklessly, and you are right that one should be careful. However, in the case of pulseaudio I have done this before and tested it again just now. I purged pulseaudio, rebooted, logged in, and was able to reinstall pulseaudio, trisquel, and trisquel-recommended. After rebooting again, sound worked as it had before. > You can remove config files of pulseaudio manually, and just do a remove > pulseaudio This is what purge does. > Always be very careful with purge. It will break your system most of the > time. Again, maybe this is true with some packages, but in the case of pulseaudio I have just tried it myself and it was not a problem. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Want to play some games, best way to install (Trisquel 8)
sudo pacman -Su --noconfirm libretro https://parabola.nu/groups/x86_64/libretro Run this on Parabola if you also have Parabola installed. For Trisquel you can also try to search for the same using, apt search libretro
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with OS after upgrade
Again please do not do this. Purge removes too much, usually not only the package but things that depend on the package so it will break your system by getting rid of too much stuff. You probably won't be able to boot into your Desktop Environment. You can remove config files of pulseaudio manually, and just do a remove pulseaudio Always be very careful with purge. It will break your system most of the time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
nice
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with OS after upgrade
> Thank you for this awareness! :-) happy_gnu is right that you probably want pulseaudio. However, it might be a worth a shot to temporarily remove it along with any config files that could be causing the problem, and then adding things back in one at a time. Try removing pulseaudio with $ sudo apt purge pulseaudio Unlike 'apt remove', 'apt purge' gets rid of config files, so if there's something wrong with your configuration this will give us a clean slate. Then reboot, and see if the slow startup issue is fixed. If it is, reinstall pulseaudo, $ sudo apt install pulseaudio and run it in a terminal. $ pulseaudio If the the terminal hangs instead of prompting you to enter a new command, that's good. It means that pulseaudio is running. Try playing something in vlc, playing something in abrowser, and adjusting volume settings. If anything goes wrong, see if an error message appears in the terminal. You might be missing the volume applet in your panel or something like that, in which case it was likely removed as a reverse dependency of pulseaudio. That's fine for now. Just see if vlc/abrowser/etc work. If everything seems okay, reboot again and see if you have sound (1) at the login screen and (2) after logging in. If you do not, add or reselect pulseaudio in Startup Applications and try again. Once/if pulseaudio is starting on login and working normally, add back in any utilities that got removed when we removed pulseaudio by reinstalling the trisquel and trisquel-recommended metapackages $ sudo apt install trisquel trisquel-recommended signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
When you are using youtube-dl or downloading videos from youtube, you are feeding the google (saying which videos are having success: very good for the google business model) -> Do not feed the google ;-)

Thank you for this awareness! :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] No Sound After Trisquel Mini Install T60
please do not do "sudo apt purge pulseaudio" purge can remove too much and break your system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with OS after upgrade
you are probably joking, but i strongly advice against this, for one "purge" can remove too much and break the system, but also PulseAudio is required for sound on things like firefox, I don't know if Abrowser requires it but removing pulseaudio can cause even more trouble.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
He said DRM'd so I thought there was a problem with the download. That got us on the long winding road down the path. While I don't see any big issue with youtube-dl, I admit JavaScript could be a problem with privacy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No Sound After Trisquel Mini Install T60
Well, I don't know if this will help your case, but I remember an issue related to pulseaudio on the old Debian Stable (Jessie), in that the audio would randomly mute and whatever I tried it would not come back.. The pseudo-fix was to install pavucontrol and then unmute it within its GUI. The real fix was: sudo apt purge pulseaudio.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with OS after upgrade
As far as your no sound issue goes try: sudo apt purge pulseaudio o/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
> We > should use precise language. Yes, although in this case the distinction does not make much of an ethical difference. DRM and proprietary JavaScript are both bad for freedom. Even if the proprietary JS executed by youtube-dl does not constitute DRM, we should not recommend it in this forum. > These recordings are for sale on Apple's Itunes. > > I think it's a lesser evil to use youtube-dl and download them from Youtube. You touch on the larger problem, which is that these companies have so much control over this information that we cannot access it without giving one of them more power. avideo > youtube-dl > satan > youtube.com, but the only long-term solution I see is to decrease our reliance on companies like Google for information, even if that makes it difficult to access some information, just as we reject some conveniences that are unavailable without proprietary software. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Want to play some games, best way to install (Trisquel 8)
That surely correct, mr, Magique Bannanna, but it's also true that a binary is not free software, unless you can prove it is (this is meant for Gnuser)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Yes, we are repeating ourselves. I don't mind how you call it but I didn't understand you at first. We should use precise language. Calling it DRM lost me. Those files are not restricted in any way. I can download them, watch them, copy them and share them all I like. Youtube has no control over how or when I watch those files.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Well, would you say that software that controls how and when you can read your book is not a part of DRM? I think that we both are getting too balky :) I have to prepare for history. Have a good time, loldier!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Non-free JavaScript is not DRM.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
..So those "recordings" that have a signature meant to be used to prevent users to download a video are examples of DRM system that Youtube built to prevent users from viewing media. You should consider it DRM. You are forced to use YouTube's proprietary software. Well, videos of группы Ноль have that 's' signature, which can be scrambled with function, which is barely possible to wright. They do not conceal a video address, they conceal a thing that can help people to get a video. So you need to run YouTube's JavaScript in your browser or use youtube-dl, which does not by-pass possible restrictions - it simply makes a use of non-free software to "help" you enjoy a video. Beware, mate!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
These recordings are for sale on Apple's Itunes. I think it's a lesser evil to use youtube-dl and download them from Youtube.
[Trisquel-users] No Sound After Trisquel Mini Install T60
After installing Trisquel Mini all my sound related things (speakers, power management beeps and microphone) don't work. Apparently, on alsamixer everything it's ok. My sound card it's an Intel HDA AD1981. What do you think ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Please do not use google and companies... There are plenty of other places where to share videos! Do Not Feed The Google!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
It has no bearing. "DRM" that is easily by-passed has failed, so it's recommended to break it. Only DRM that is impenetrable or unbreakable is an issue. You need to break Content Scrambling in order to watch or rip a DVD movie. Doing so with libdvdcss is not an issue with freedom. But I wouldn't call it DRM (with Youtube). It's obfuscation. All they do is try to conceal the video address. DRM is something that hurts your freedom by preventing to copy something you've legitimately bought or acquired. The only questionable thing is the use of proprietary code that is runj in the browser or terminal to view or download the video.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Recordings do not :) You are right. But in order to download them you have to run proprietary software that will deal with signatures found in some files. (just as explained here) this is DRM. You can not get a copy of a video file, because YouTube won't allow you to do so.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
You conflate things. These recordings have no DRM. Once downloaded, they can be used as you wish. No restrictions in them. They can be copied or played back on any device. Proprietary JavaScript does not make it DRM.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problems with OS after upgrade
Actually this is happening when I am clicking on the Start Menu with the list of programs. It takes a few minutes (+/- 3 minutes) to be able to navigate through the list of programs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Well, it does, my friend: https://superuser.com/questions/773719/how-do-all-of-these-save-video-from-youtube-services-work#answer-773998 (README file by GPast) And unfortunately they make it extremely hard to download videos containing popular works of singers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
It has nothing to do with "DRM".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
And this is a problem. Youtube-dl may (and it does) execute proprietary JavaScript in order to get something.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Youtube-dl has no difficulty downloading them. I just did.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why Trisquel website isn't translated into Russian?
Hm, both of these videos are DRM'ed. This is why I prefer using avideo over youtube-dl. I will try to search for them, when I have time :)
