Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
Again, no people are forced to be stuck on Openbox with LXQt, i.e. LXQt grants a freedom to be flexible between different wm. Also, you're also free to try different icon themes like Breeze and Oxygen from KDE, Deepin themes from Deepin (DDE), Adwaita, Menta etc from GTK+ (that's the platform Xfce 4 is based on).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
You would like to make your own mini ISO for Parabola / Trisquel / Hyperbola with Xfce desktop, Falkon (QupZilla) browser, Trojita mails, Telegram desktop, Quassel IRC. In LXQt the most ugly component should be Openbox that I quite ensure, I agree this and you're free to switch window managers and remove Openbox (i.e. no people are forced to be stuck on Openbox with LXQt), this flexibility is just LXQt-only feature.
Re: [Trisquel-users] systemd unit for wpa_supplicant & dhclient on trisquel (Ubuntu)
In openrc my configuration was much simpler. I only wrote /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and added to openrc wpa_supplicand and dhcpcd services. So this worked without any actions from my side. Systemd has lot of specific functions, adding services more difficult. I tried 'Type=Simple' as somebody offered foo service in web and it did not work. I tried also 'ExecStop=command1 && command2' and it caused the error when I stop the service. Also I used this one I have seen in web 'WantedBy=multi-user.target' .
Re: [Trisquel-users] Let me several questions about kernel compilation?
ok. I see it. When I do not touch config `make` finishes ok. But now I switched off IrDa, Bluetooth, Xen drivers, Hyper-V, Fujitsu, all wifi manufacturers except my Atheros. Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Decrypted Show Zero: Plus interview with Ruben on Trisquel 8
Amazing, really. You seem to already have experience in being a host? Very smooth and natural flow of conversation between you two. You can become a better version of the linux action show... without the bullshit content. I would watch it and cheer for it. I know this is a controversial topic, but did you ever consider uploading to youtube? It's not a very freedom-loving platform, but in order to make people aware of freedom issues, I think it would be very beneficial to upload it anyway. Good it example: I myself become conscious about freedom in software when I found a video of RMS on youtube.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
I respectfully disagree, I really don't like LXQT's interface. it is majorly ugly. no offense. XFCE should be the next mini I think.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
I used to like LXDE the most, but yeah, it was when they decided to move to qt5 I decided to go to xfce4. XFCE is almost as light and supports changing desktop wallpaper depending on duration. That is why I use XFCE now. That and, LXDE is going to be no longer supported... ;( Although maybe if we are lucky someone will fork it like it happened to gnome 2 after that was ended. LXQT is ugly... and for me someone who doesn't usually care about graphics to say its ugly, it is really, really ugly. well meh... glad XFCE still is an option. :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : systemd unit for wpa_supplicant & dhclient on trisquel (Ubuntu)
I am no expert in writing unit files. However, I am pretty sure it make no sense to have twice "ExecStart" (or "ExecStop") and I do not think the type "oneshot" is right here. Also, I believe services "After=network.target" expect wpa_supplicant (unless you never connect to an encrypted Wifi network... but, then, why not disabling wpa_supplicant?). What is wrong with /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service (the default unit)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Freedom Decrypted Show Zero: Plus interview with Ruben on Trisquel 8
I wrote: - adding the URL for each episode's media file to the show's RSS feed http://www.freedomdecrypted.com/public_html/index.php/feed/ as an attachment to that feed entry. This will let people download episodes of the show via a feed reader. I also recommend uploading a copy of each media file to other hosts, hosts that don't require JS (or at least don't require nonfree JS) to download the show files. I suggest getting an archive.org account and hosting copies there, for instance. Mirror copies can and should be added to the RSS feed as well as enclosures (I should have said enclosures, not attachments, above). This benefits your audience and it helps them get copies of the show in a way that can increase their privacy. If you don't want to pay to host media files, you can also help reduce your costs with mirror copies. And on the same ground I recommend licensing your show to share at least verbatim copies. Thanks for considering these suggestions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] systemd unit for wpa_supplicant & dhclient on trisquel (Ubuntu)
I solved this issue. I modified service script and it starts and stops in a proper way. So each command must have own line ExecStart, cannot use &&. Also `enable` was not working cause needs to put service file to /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant_my.service and then generate a link. This is how to make service works: # cat /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant_my.service [Unit] Description=Start WPA Supplicant and Dhclient After=network.target [Service] Type=oneshot RemainAfterExit=yes ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp1s0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf ExecStart=/sbin/dhclient wlp1s0 ExecStop=/usr/bin/killall -q wpa_supplicant ExecStop=/usr/bin/killall -q dhclient #TimeoutStartSec=5sec [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target # systemctl link /lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant_my.service # systemctl start wpa_supplicant_my.service # systemctl enable wpa_supplicant_my.service After reboot I have wifi. # systemctl status wpa_supplicant_my.service ● wpa_supplicant_my.service - Start WPA Supplicant and Dhclient Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant_my.service; enabled; vendo Active: active (exited) since Сб 2018-06-16 23:27:02 +03; 6min ago Process: 985 ExecStart=/sbin/dhclient wlp1s0 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 967 ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp1s0 -c /etc/wpa_supplican Main PID: 985 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: /system.slice/wpa_supplicant_my.service ├─ 984 /sbin/wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp1s0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_s └─1221 /sbin/dhclient wlp1s0 июн 16 23:26:57 asus systemd[1]: Starting Start WPA Supplicant and Dhclient... июн 16 23:26:57 asus wpa_supplicant[967]: Successfully initialized wpa_supplican июн 16 23:26:58 asus root[998]: /etc/dhcp/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/avahi-autoipd r июн 16 23:26:58 asus dhclient[985]: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.68 on wlp1s0 to 255 июн 16 23:27:01 asus dhclient[985]: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.68 on wlp1s0 to 255 июн 16 23:27:01 asus dhclient[985]: DHCPACK of 192.168.1.68 from 192.168.1.1 июн 16 23:27:02 asus dhclient[985]: bound to 192.168.1.68 -- renewal in 10977 se июн 16 23:27:02 asus systemd[1]: Started Start WPA Supplicant and Dhclient. Hello! I cannot see networkmanager's slow work. Well, you can see the difference right? As you compare line by line they're not identical: One has Flidas Main and Security. The other has Flidas Main, Security, and Updates.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DD'ing the Live DVD to the internal hard disk is good for public computers.
That's correct, yes. But that's on the hard disk, though...saving to the USB drive will still save you your files.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Let me several questions about kernel compilation?
Some configurations are indeed incorrect. As I already wrote, you want to use make's "jobs" (-j) option. For instance: $ make -j 5 The more cores you have, the highest the argument can be (in it a number of source files compiled in parallel).
[Trisquel-users] Re : DD'ing the Live DVD to the internal hard disk is good for public computers.
Unless I miss something, the command you proposed neither allows to save user files (including the configuration of the application) nor to permanently install applications.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
Trisquel as Ubuntu clone is user-friendly but is not good optimized. Please, any info you'll get will be quiet useful.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Let me several questions about kernel compilation?
Hello! I tried to compile linux-source-4.4.0 without any changes, resting config as it was there. # make menuconfig ...without any changes I saved .config # make it worked ok. So now I try again to make with no bluetooth and no irda. Every time I have difficult to understand why Xen, Android, Fujitsu, Miscrosoft Hyper-V and many other stuff are there. When I switching off all I see as unnecessary the make breaks. `make` takes 10 hours for my asus x552e.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DD'ing the Live DVD to the internal hard disk is good for public computers.
Not unless you are carrying a USB drive, then you won't need the cloud anyway.
[Trisquel-users] Re : DD'ing the Live DVD to the internal hard disk is good for public computers.
Nowadays it is called a live system. I very much people like carrying phones with an external drive plugged in. I am also afraid you are suggesting having all user files in a "cloud" (the 'dd' command you propose does not provide persistent storage). Terrible for privacy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DD'ing the Live DVD to the internal hard disk is good for public computers.
In my opinion, ALL computers, tablets and phones should be diskless, like the Raspberry Pi, no matter what the chipset is. If you buy a computer, tablet or phone, it should come with an external disk, with your choice of a Free OS on it. No internal pre-installed garbage, easy to transfer to another device of any kind. After all, this is what computers USED to be like in the early 80's right? With their floppy disks?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Let me several questions about kernel compilation?
Check your sources.list. They don't seem to be identical.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
I just ran some tests, with a clock timer and systemd-analyze. Here are the results. No battery on laptop, only straight AC power outlet systemd-analyze Startup finished in 10.333s (kernel) + 26.091s (userspace) = 36.425s My clock counts 58 seconds (including the time it takes for me to type the 2 passwords) Battery only at 8%, no AC power outlet in systemd-analyze Startup finished in 11.084s (kernel) + 26.310s (userspace) = 37.395s My clock 59 seconds (again including the time it takes for me to type the passwords) I swear I don't understand why it was giving me the time of 1 minute and some seconds before in systemd-analyze. Right now I get these consistent times in both systemd-analyze and real life time clock. Well, in face of this, I would say that it's the best I will ever get without changing to an SSD. I will still try to disable some stuff, maybe it will get better or not, but I don't want services that are NOT needed running for nothing. Thanks everyone anyway, I will let you guys know if something new comes up.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
I just ran systemd-analyze again and got this Startup finished in 11.289s (kernel) + 30.593s (userspace) = 41.882s Wtf? The only thing I noticed different was that I was not running the laptop on battery but straight for the AC outlet. Does that even matter? I guess I will have to give it a few tests and see what is happening really.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
Would disabling some of those services prevent the booting of the system? As long as I can "systemctl disable / systemctl enable" I am okay with that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
What would help then? Is there anything that can make the kernel load faster, or the only option is a)replacing the kernel b)buying SSD ? Also, if you can offer some input to the questions I posed below, I would be very grateful (meaning the Ofono service and such). Thanks.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
The kernel loads before the service. So disabling services will not speedup the time to load the kernel.

I cannot know exactly cause I see names there for a first time now: gdomap, irqbalance, acpid, atd, setvtrgb, remote-fs-pre, nss-user-lookup. You should have rescue usb flash to boot with it, to mount broken system and reconfigure it. disabling ofono, openvpn is ok. disabling avahi is ok too https://ccm.net/faq/739-disabling-the-avahi-daemon

Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
Ok, so, running systemctl list-units I noticed some things: ofono.service loaded active running oFono Mobile telephony stack openvpn.service loaded active exitedOpenVPN service avahi-daemon.socket loaded active running Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Stack Acti As far as I am aware, I don't use Mobile phone in my computer, neither do I use VPN (I tried using BitMask but it leaks DNS, so for now I don't use it) and I think avahi is meant for using network printers which I don't have. So, it should be ok to disable these right? I mean, it's not like these are in the critical chain MagicBanana mentioned, but I guess having less stuff running would not be bad either way, right? The thing is, am I considering it right? I couldn't find much information online about Ofono for example. How can one know what each entry on the list-units option does? Which ones are essential and which ones are not? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Speed up boot process of Trisquel 8
you know I disabled tor service and tor@default service and my systemd says this: # systemd-analyze Startup finished in 13.233s (kernel) + 2.998s (userspace) = 16.231s This means minus 16 seconds from userspace as in my previous post. Now I search how to move this and other services loading to later time after I see login page to speed up boot. kernel loads very slowly 13 seconds is far from best. needs to learn which services are unnecessary like CUPS (printer), openvpn and so on from here `systemctl list-units`
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why does wpa_supplicant presents in my system?
thank you. Is there any free alternative?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Why does wpa_supplicant presents in my system?
You can use the "Synaptic Package Manager" or, in a terminal: $ sudo apt remove wpasupplicant ... but I very much doubt you want to remove your ability to connect to encrypted Wifi networks! That is what the package provides. NetworkManager relies on it. And alternative to NetworkManager is Wicd, which depends as well on wpa_supplicant.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Let me several questions about kernel compilation?
Just run the 'make' command again. It will not relaunch the compilation of what has already been compiled (in particular, it will not compile anything if it has already compiled everything).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Let me several questions about kernel compilation?
What error? If it is a segmentation error, it may be a hardware issue. I would check the RAM with "memtest86+" (in Trisquel's repository, to be launched from the bootloader; let it run a whole night).

My lab's public workstations are diskless. Users bring their HDD or SSD and connect them to the eSATA port.
