Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
so when i try to make the startup disk the make startup disk button is inactive, the erase disk button is active when I try to erase the disk i get this error rg.freedesktop.DBus.Python.dbus.exceptions.DBusException: com.ubuntu.USBCreator.Error.NotAuthorized so it seems I can't make a startup disk to boot a liveusb from guest account? which doesn't help my problem at all of being locked out of admin.
[Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
As the title says I lost my admin password and am locked out, I've read through this thread https://trisquel.info/en/forum/locked-out-admin-log Since I bought this computer with trisquel installed on it as well as libreboot I'm not sure if the same process in the posts mentioned above is way to go. I tried creating the live USB through startup disk creator while logged in as guest but get a error message no permissions to erase disk and the make disk button is not active. It could be the USB stick I used, I was able to format it but it has a partition I couldn't erase so will try a new USB stick and see if it works. I don't have any data saved under admin so if there is a easier way to reset this thing I don't care if that admin account is lost. I just want to make sure I don't mess up how its configured with libreboot and I am pretty new to Linux which is why I get this system preconfigured. Any help is appreciated, I need this thing to work so I can work ; ) Mahalo
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
It's a beautiful system, especially when I'm not locked out of it. I was hesitant about fully switching to a free life so. Kept my MacBook for a while and just sold it last week to go full freedom full Time but forgot to decrypt my passwords that I had stored on my MacBook before I formatted it. Now I'm just a guest to freedom : (
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel with Full Disk Encryption, including /boot/, on Libreboot systems
Thanks, Is there a way to encrypt the disk without reinstalling trisquel on a computer that's already configured with trisquel and libreboot? I have libiquity taurinus, Sorry if that's stupid, Ive only had my system for a short time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
I followed this https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb and keep getting a failed to install message. not sure what i'm doing wrong
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
So nothing I tried was working from my guest account in trisquel so I made a live USB on a windows computer and reinstalled trisquel on my x200 now I am in control of my computer but lost libreboot when I reinstalled trisquel. So I guess I need to reconfigure libreboot now and should be good?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
Super confused, is libreboot still on my system somewhere or do I need to download it and install. How do I see what bios is running after new installation of trisquel
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
I'm just not sure where to start since it was already flashed with libreboot I'm not sure which installation instructions to follow on libreboot website. Yes I'm supernoob,
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
Tried this, says unable to change root gid: operation not permitted Is this because I'm signed in as guest?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to modify the time before screen goes to sleep
Lol, not sure how I overlooked that but thanks: )
[Trisquel-users] Encrypting files?
I've been encrypting files with my pgp key and I found out yesterday when I used photorec to recover a deleted file on a USB drive that it recovered the unencrypted files, so am I encrypting files the wrong way? When I decrypt my files it makes a decrypted zip file then unzip the file to access it. Then I would delete those files that have been decrypted at the end of a session so only the encrypted file remains. I didn't realize that the decrypted zip and file would still be there and recoverable by photorec. There has to be a better way because this is not secure at all. What am I screwing up?
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble configuring nordvpn/openvpn
It's not there unfortunately, I have the unzipped file in downloads and can see all the certificates but none are available in those files you mentioned or others when I'm looking for them through network manager. I tried to extract the files into those folders and get a error message. Synaptic package manager says they are installed. Not sure what I did wrong. I followed the nordvpn instructions properly Thanks for your help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Issues when trying to install tor browser
I just downloaded it today, was having trouble with the command line install instructions as well, I don't know why but a lot of command line instructions don't work for me and I'm not familiar enough to figure out why, but I extracted It in downloads was able to run TOR from there. Moved it to desktop and all set. Except I think I'm gonna move it to a Flash drive instead.Make sure to adjust your security settings in TOR when you first launch it comes configured at the lowest security setting.
[Trisquel-users] How to recover deleted files on a USB drive?
How to recover deleted files on a USB drive? I'm not sure how this file got deleted but it has some criticle information in it that will cost me thousands of dollars if lost. It's on a USB drive i was tranfering files between two computers and it mysteriously vanished. Any help on recovering this file is greatly appreciated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to recover deleted files on a USB drive?
Thanks, tried both. Photorec worked
[Trisquel-users] How to modify the time before screen goes to sleep
Can't figure out what setting to adjust to change how long before my screen goes to sleep, right now it sleeps after a few minutes and have to enter my password again. I tried adjusting power settings to not suspend and has no effect on this.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
Cool, looks like I'm all good. Thanks, turns out to have been a good thing to go through this because I was able to setup disk encryption when I reinstalled trisquel and got to meet you fine folks. Now on to further learning and enjoying the free life. Peace!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
Yes that was me, thanks again
[Trisquel-users] Bitcoinabc and electron wallet
I'm trying to install either wallet for bitcoincash on trisquel, I'm able to run electron cash from the root directory electrum but when I try to install on my system get " importerror: no module named setup tools. [Trisquel-users] What's the best vpn for trisquel
What's the best vpn for trisquel?Looks like some people are using nordvpn, seems decent at a glance they are based out of panama which is good. Anyone use ExpressVPN on trisquel? They have a onion website which is nice and I think they are the only ones with that so can pay with bitcoin and download it through TOR. Any info or suggestions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's the best vpn for trisquel
Also expressvpn has a DNs leak test, haven't looked to see if nordvpn has that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What service do you recommend to replace OpenMailBox
https://eludemaillhqfkh5.onion.to/about Elude is a good service and works with thunderbird and is accessed through TOR.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's the best vpn for trisquel
I certainly don't want opinions, good info like what you presented is what I've been looking for. Thank you
[Trisquel-users] trouble configuring nordvpn/openvpn
I'm stuck on trying to ca.certificates package, this is what it says :/etc/openvpn$ apt-get install ca-certificates E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? what do I do?
Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble configuring nordvpn/openvpn
ok, that worked certificates installed, I verified with synaptic package manger as well. now I'm trying to configure my vpn in network manager using password authentication, I've selected the server I want to connect to in etc/openvpn file. trying to find the cooresponding ca-certificate and can't find it. the file is empty for openvpn. How to do I find the certificate?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lost admin password on my libiquity taurinus x2000 with trisquel
The boot menu flashes but doesn't have that graphic on it just black background, does that matter?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Bitcoinabc and electron wallet
Electrum runs fine it's the alt wallet electroncash that won't install, it's for the alt coin bitcoin. Cash that came out of the uahf. I can run the binary through electrum parent directory but trying to install it get " import error no module named setup tools. I figured out that the bitcoinabc wallet needs bitcoincore just as electroncash needs electrum and then install the binaries for the new wallet but bitcoinabc keeps crashing my computer. Maybe my x200 doesn't have enough horsepower to run it? Looked on bitcoin forums and others seem to be able to run it no problem so maybe it's trisquel or my computer, or I'm just dumb!
Re: [Trisquel-users] facebook trackin, google trackin and VPN
Most reputable vpn say they don't use logs, but you gotta trust them on their word so don't do anything too sketchy on it. Use tails and go to a library or coffee shop if you need to be anonymous. . I started a thread asking what's the best vpn for trisquel but no replies yet. Searching the forum seems like nordvpn is used by some members. I've used expressvpn in the past and like it. Both have a no logs policy and both are based out of a country with no US jurisdiction. ExpressVPN is a big company and has a lot servers and nice features, both you can sign up anonymously and pay with Bitcoin. And I think they both are use on openvpn software. I wouldn't trust any vpn that is a free service, but they both are open source software. The thing with expressvpn that stands out is it actually has a functioning phone app and can use your service on multiple devices. This could also be a security concern though as your account would link you to multiple devices even if you bought your subscription anonymously. I'm thinking a solid setup would be a nordvpn flashed router for the home and a expressvpn for mobile devices. It will cost a little bit of money but seems worth it to me.
[Trisquel-users] Pgp not importing keys
The prompt comes up asking if I want to import a key then disappears after click yes but no key is imported. I updated all my software and still not working. Any idea what's going on or how to fix?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Purism working on libre phone
Thanks brother!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Purism working on libre phone
I'm not trying to fan the flames with this and I think this is an important post as not everyone has been around here for a long time or is as knowledgeable on the subject as some of you more experienced long time members. and even though it is publicity for purism, this thread made me hold off on a purchase with them. So in the name of freedom this must be discussed. By the way libreboot Leah, I have nothing but respect for what youve accomplished and bring to the community. As someone that has a libreboot x200, I recently looked at purism because I need more power for some things and trying to accomplish that without giving up on my freedom: I wrote purism on their forum and asked why they aren't endorsed by FSF and il post their response below. The thing that bothered me about the interaction is that they moved the thread I started to a private round table board on the forum instead of leaving it public which is a big turn off for transparency. After talking to a pretty knowledgeable IT person I met recently he claims to be able to accomplish a similar level of freedom on a modern computer for me, however the cost would be a little more than going through purism and not quite as much power so I'm still on the fence about what to do. Purism seems to be deceptive in their marketing which is a.big turn off but the simple fact is that I need more power and can't afford a libreboot desktop around 5k. Looking to spend about 2 grand max on my setup. Here's what purism said to me; There is no such thing as a middle-ground with the FSF. The FSF will not endorse any post-2008 Intel-based (or AMD-based, until further notice) computer, until every last kilobyte of the Intel Management Engine (or AMD PSP) has been reverse engineered or zeroed out (currently Purism can zero out somewhere between 90 and 95% of the IME). In terms of software: it’s an excruciatingly slow process (months long, and moving targets), even if we already go above and beyond any requirements for GNU Linux distro endorsement. To be clear for anyone reading my previous reply: I’m not blaming the FSF for sticking to their principles (it’s their job), I’m just stating the current state of things, factually speaking. i.e. 99% free isn’t 100% and therefore there is “no middleground” when it comes to certification—but then nobody else is even remotely close to 100% with modern mainstream hardware, either. So eventually we’ll get to the point where we meet the FSF RYF requirements, in the meantime people have to understand that this middle-ground is the reason why the certification has not yet been obtained, but it’s still the furthest anyone has ever gotten in the industry, with modern x86 that people can just purchase conveniently and a “99%” solution. if it’s any indication we were able to retroactively port the version 1 of of the Librem 13 to coreboot with a neutralized ME, so it is possible to provide updates “after shipping”. The remaining part of the IME, which needs to be “freed”, is a matter of reverse engineering the remaining binary (hopefully into source code form, as I understand it) to be able to audit what it does, which would probably satisfy the FSF. So my expectation is that this remaining part is an academic exercise that will not require a firmware update (unless we find something really nasty in those hardware bring-up routines).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Purism working on libre phone
Thanks for the info, good stuff here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Purism working on libre phone
Yeah it's definitely deceptive marketing, in the same response he says it's 90-95% freed and then calls it a 99% solution in the same response. Anyways, glad to hear some input because those guys are good at marketing even if they are full of shit. Is this ME neutralization script available somewhere for anyone to use? Any links to it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Purism working on libre phone
It seems to me that a lot of the people here on this forum work in the computer industry and have fairly advance knowledge already. Bridging the gap between developers and normal every day users is a big task. Try and do some basic searches as if you were someone without any knowledge of fsf.org or similar things and see how far you have to dig to find it. As someone who is not a professional in the industry it took me a lot of work just to get where I am at with my basic free setup on a x200. I spent many hours researching just to find the company that I bought it from and after I got my computer in the mail I turned it on once and realized I didn't know what I was doing and didn't have time to figure out how to migrate my whole life over to this system so it sat on my shelf for 6 months until I had the energy to tackle that task, as someone who spent most of my life using Apple products it left me with a somewhat learning disability. It's like if a kid only read picture books until they were an adult and then someone gave them a real book and they had to learn how to read for the first time as an adult. Once I decided to migrate to my x200 it was not easy, I've spent countless hours setting it up and still have a lot to learn and things to figure out how to setup properly. I find it all very fascinating and like learning new things but it's certainly not easy and not everyone is willing to make that kind of commitment, or have the ability to. I was at more of a disadvantage coming from Apple computers and I'm sure it would be a lot easier for someone already familiar with Linux but my point is that there is a lot of people like me or worse so bringing free computing products to the masses is a big undertaking. I think it will take a similar marketing approach that purism is doing to accomplish this, in all honesty they do a great job in a lot of what they do, it's a shame their product isn't legit in terms of real freedom though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Whonix on trisquel?
Yeah I read through that, I was asking if there is another way to use whonix on trisquel without virtual box?
[Trisquel-users] Whonix on trisquel?
Trying to put whonix on trisquel, seems it won’t work because virtual box won’t work on trisquel. Am I missing something? Is there another way to make it work?
