I put a screenshot of Solaris CDE in the wallpaper thread. It's kind of
misplaced but here's the link.

Of course they are better. A Retina display is overwhelmingly good to look
at. I'm not saying screens shouldn't be sharp. The same way a good soft couch
is eaiser to sit at than a hard surface. I just don't need that bling.
This may be helpful I hope.
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/edit-grub
My setup worked like that with three entries. Windows was installed first,
then Trisquel. Changing '0' to '2' made Win start first by default.
I wonder if this works.
sudo grub-set-default X where 'X' is a number 0--3,
Solaris wavy line backdrop. This is from a Wikimedia Commons screenshot.
How's about a maze?
Here's a screenshot of a 32x32 backdrop, transparent. Looks even better than
the 48x48.
Who knows when 19th century tapestry or wallpapers are all the rage again.
I think there should be Motif look-a-like themes for Xfce on Xfce.org.
Vneshnyi vid. Внешний вид .
I converted that to XBM (X BitMap) and reduced resolution to 48x48. It looks
marvellous through a green background.
I don't know what the complications are secifically but this is what they say
here.

This is Dthello, the CDE splash screen. It shows the version of CDE when
starting but I could not capture that, only the background.
That Mofit theme looks authentic. It's good to know it's available. Thanks.
I did it step by step as detailed in the instructions. I didn't try anything
else. If you succeed, it would be far easier to do a reinstall.
I think if it was as simple as packaging they would've done it. Maybe
maintenance is an issue.
I think it's the case with Jamal/Gamal. The Egyptian pronunciation is closer

What if you just switch off the built-in display?
I think the desktop decorations are 16 colours VGA. Fonts are crisp. I think
a computer interface must look like a computer, not a printed newspaper or
brochure. Form follows function.
I love the way the menus from the front panel can be detached and dropped on
the workplace desktop.
I noticed some Gnome programs cannot be resized. Like Evince, but it's of
decent size and PDFs are legible. I replaced Evince with MuPDF
I installed SMplayer. Works just fine.
SMplayer? The interface can be changed.
I wrote something to that effect here.

Check if it applies to your situation.
I tried to install it alongside a regular Trisquel setup but failed. I wiped
the laptop, installed minimal Debian with X support. The GUI wouldn't boot if
I had other window managers.
I'll play with it for a while. It's a little bit long in the tooth.
I tried to make an Xsession file.
https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/Createxsession/
It would hang at boot at a blue screen with an hourglass.
https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/SupportedPlatforms/
CDE may or may not compile on these platforms but will not actually work
I think you could try Trisquel netinstall. I don't see why it should not work
the same.
I installed sound drivers. CDE doesn't seem to have any apps for sound except
the beep. My Debian setup was minimal, so I had to add Alsa. Alsamixer GUI
works nicely. I made a launcher for it.

#apt-get install libasound2 libasound2-doc alsa-base alsa-utils
If K9copy can't do it, I don't know what will do it undr GNU/Linux. You'll

I installed CDE.
You're right. Thanks. I installed package xsol. 'Command not found'. Then
looked for it in /usr/share/games. It doesn't add itself to the path somehow.
Here it is.
Here's a video tutorial how to edit and replace launcher icons in CDE's front
panel subpanels (menus).
https://youtu.be/O8zpHtXL2Jg
I changed most of the generic icons that I found and used. CDE only comes
with a limited set of pixel art.
There used to be a version of Debian 6 called CDEbian.
Somebody has given a download link here.

Thanks for the tip. I installed i3wm and it's great fun.

GNU alone is not right because it contradicts what RMS has been tellin the
world all along. It's GNU plus Linux. A totally different situation arises if
the GNU kernel is ever finished and polished to be useful and stable or if
they (the GNU project) come up with another kernel of their own.
You should watch the video. It deals with the myths you've raised.

It's entertaining but not the obvious way.
That's an introduction to the link. Don't take it personally. Frankly, I'm

Rhythmbox hides its GUI in the notification area when minimized to get out of
the way. To exit, you should press quit or stop music and then close the

I think it's right click on the icon in the notification area. You'll see an
option 'quit'. If this is confusing, stop music and then close the window. If
music is being played and you minimize the player window, it will hide its
GUI but still keeps playing.
You have to narrow down your issues so they can be answered. There's nobody
here who can take responsibility for allegations that run rampant out there.
There's no myth about rebooting. It's done when needed -- usually kernel
updates.
I'm quite happy to address any real issues you might
From what I can tell, the OP could be Matthew Moore or a person of his ilk.
https://youtu.be/y_lhqg_p21k
The OP is savvy about computers and GNU/Linux. He's not looking for help.
He's looking for faults and excuses to make a point of view. This is my
(admittedly hasty) conclusion based on his posts.

I didn't know FSF was considered a charity. Must be my understanding of
English lacking in this respect. I thought it was a non-profit. I checked and
they seem to be synonyms. Charities have a bad name.
I stand corrected. Maybe I was thinking of foundations. Anyway, never mind
that part. Google giving to charity looks to me like buying face. Am I wrong
about that as well?
FSF a charity? Charities are more often than not for tax evasion. Besides,
Google is only buying face and making merit. In the past influential people
paid to the church to ease their conscience and absolve sins. This is the
modern variety.

What made you 'convinced' to use libre sofware? Will it work with other

I grew into it gradually by using it. Nobody told me to do it. I never had
any vested interest in Windows, for instance. It was easy to throw it away.
For some, maybe it's hard.
RMS is ridiculed for not gaining wealth himself and getting rich.
Frankly Richard, I agree. You should be more of a sport. Think of the

Screen reader? Remove the package gnome-orca.
Uruk looks really nice and beautiful. I like it.
Startx should do it. Do you mean something like 'sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm'?
Or 'gnome-session'?

This is spot-on.
Most people think they are petty figures in statistics. They mistakenly

I guess the answer is: when ready. Those who know won't tell, the rest can

I tried to write my forum name in Arabic. I still remember something. I took

It was not supposed to be taken literally. I mean, those who know won't give
any clues or updates before they are ready to release. No conspiracy here.
This seems to be how they write Uruk GNU/Linux in Arabic.

I don't think it's anything that was added by Windows. The BIOS string is
there because the manufacturer (OEM) added it there. All BIOS flash ROMs from
the OEM are likely to add that string back if it was there in the first
