"much cheaper than those sold on ThinkPenguin" Yes but it's nice to support companies that are trying to do the right thing. We don't have many of those and it's good to encourage.

ThinkPenguin has such.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mail Disappears From Inbox!
If it only happens after checking mail from your proprietary email program perhaps that seems to point the finger in that direction. Before you say "but I can still see them in the proprietary program", keep in mind that the messages that appear in that proprietary program don't necessarily have to even exist on the mail server anymore. Other people using proprietary software seem to have similar problems, like https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8231116
Re: [Trisquel-users] 2FA
Look into oathtool: https://www.nongnu.org/oath-toolkit/ You don't say what you want to use 2FA for but here's an example for SSH: First install libpam-oath and oathtool. A seed is needed. The seed should be unique for every user. One way to make a seed: head -10 /dev/urandom | sha512sum | cut -b 1-30 Edit or create /etc/users.oath and put in something like this using the seed from the previous step: HOTP/T30/6 myusername - d1da273d1e26613289efb82bca8a9b Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config and edit or include these values: ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes PasswordAuthentication no UsePAM yes AuthenticationMethods publickey,keyboard-interactive Edit /etc/pam.d/sshd Add the line: auth required pam_oath.so usersfile=/etc/users.oath window=30 digits=6 Comment out common-auth: # Standard Un*x authentication. @include common-auth And after setting up the various machines you might, for example, run this: oathtool --totp d1da273d1e26613289efb82bca8a9b And get your 2FA code: 639420 Ta Da.
Re: [Trisquel-users] after crypt setup, Trisquel does not be loaded
"Configuration of full-disk encryption using Debian Installer is quite straightforward. A professional installer should be like this." Trisquel has the same installer on the netinstall ISO.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Etiona
Except for the areas with no warning that people accidentally fall into. One example is that Debian makes no effort to steer people to only free browser add-ons. Pop open the browser, end up at the default location, and grab non-free ones without even knowing. I've talked to people that had no idea their add-ons were non-free after I pointed that out. This is only 1 example. Even with something like Debian it's still necessary to keep the shields up.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wifi Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 does not work on Debian 10
"Ultimately, why must you use a stable version? I never recommend personal users, especially beginners to choose stable version (let alone an LTS one)." I suppose that excludes Trisquel then since it's both stable and LTS. I go with stable and LTS because I like my GNU/Linux distros to be boring and uneventful. Specifically: Releases that happen at 2 - 5 year intervals and where package version numbers are frozen in time on release. This lets me work on the things I want to work on and not spending my time on fixing the distro. Can't remember where I heard this one: "The bleeding edge is stained by the blood of the users."
Re: [Trisquel-users] Another path....
I'm not proposing a different standard. PureOS was an oversight and those problems should be addressed there too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Another path....
Do you mean Uruk would directly use the Ubuntu repositories in the sources.list? That means would automatically fail https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html "using the Linux-libre kernel and using Canonical-supported free and open-source software repositories that does not contain non-free packages and closed programs" Excluding programs is not the only thing. Some need modification, not outright banning.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which CPU does work with Trisquel?
In APT look at the first error message, not the last. The "repository does not contain a Release file" only came up because it could not download the Release file after the earlier error message: Could not resolve 'linux-libre.gnulinux.si' So that is the *real* error. It sounds like there is a DNS or other networking problem going on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Package non-free trisquel 9
"Isn't everything in Trisquel's repository required to be "buildable" with only free software?" Yes. This should be reported https://trisquel.info/en/project/issues and an email to report-nonf...@fsf.org so the OP can get a GNU Buck: https://www.gnu.org/help/gnu-bucks.en.html

Re: [Trisquel-users] Nouveau, kernel and freezes
"Unfortunately, still crashes happens sometimes due to some Nouveau bug still unresolved. I'm talking with Karol Herbst to find a solution but i need more logs." Hopefully it will be fixed with 5.8 which is due out probably in the latter part of July. I'm predicting July 19 assuming that there are a total of 6 Release Candidates (which is most common but sometimes there have been 7 and 8 so add 1 or 2 more weeks for that). Time will tell. Either way I will have 5.8 out and ready within 24 hours as per usual. "P.S. Oh, and as far as i know, the latest linux-libre kernel version inside trisquel repositories is 4.15.106, which is pretty much old." But still being maintained. That's one of the appealing parts of Trisquel to me: The freezing of version numbers on release, except for backported security and bug fixes only.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Libre Kernel?
Great! You should see 5.7.5 shortly.

Okay; make it so. There are weekly developer meetings in #trisquel-dev on irc.freenode.net each Friday.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Kernel conflict
You can, of course, remove whatever you want - it's your system. It is still a good idea to leave the old kernel there in case there's something wrong with the new one. While that may not happen very often (as you say "without encountering problems") there's always a possibility. There's no real benefit to removing the old kernel beyond saving some disk space. Whatever happened with the situation here where you ended up in the rescue mode was almost certainly not because of a "kernel conflict" as a result of 2 kernels existing on disk but something else. There wasn't enough information provided to fully diagnose it though. We know only that you ended up in the rescue shell.

I have removed that mirror. > I'm a bit concerned that jxself hasn't responded on that thread at all. I don't read all threads on the forums and didn't know that "Problems after upgrade" had anything to do with my APT repository. The other part I find concerning is that in both of the threads there was no suggestion to contact me to report the problem. If there are problems people should actually _tell me_ (i.e., pop open an email program and write in) - I can't promise to see messages posted elsewhere.
Re: [Trisquel-users] VRMS
So many different levels: Not only is VRMS a complete joke and totally inaccurate and incomplete anyway, it's also not completely not necessary. Trisquel doesn't have proprietary software (if you find any it's an accident - file a bug and it'll be fixed.) If you install such yourself you don't need VRMS to tell you what you already know you're doing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Firefox with Trisquel
"however it still has its name and logo trademarked" To be sure, trademarks in and of themselves aren't a problem. It only became a problem when Mozilla included terms for distributing copies of the software in the trademark license. Trademarks are supposed to identify a source, not control distribution of copies. Distribution (i.e., the making of copies) is supposed to be the realm of copyright but Mozilla's trying to go there via trademark instead. Sadly, the Palemoon people are trying to do that too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Group Cohesion
"The biggest question is: Does it even make sense, as a mere student or other subordinate member of a group, to demand that the whole group change its habits? It seems futile and arrogant, and disrespectful to others." Depends on how the issue is framed. We all know why proprietary software is unethical. If it were solely up to one individual person that *might* be one thing. Although they should be using free software for their own sake and that would still deserve a discussion and push to using free software. But: Programs involving multiple people, like chat software, are even more insidious because it also pressures other people into using the software in order to talk to their friends through the "network effect." If you've already lost one person to proprietary software each additional person's freedom should be fought for even harder to avoid losing any more. So TL;DR: Yes this is something that should be done. The "habits" of using proprietary software are harmful not to just one person using the software but to other group members as well and so yes - this conversation should happen about what the problems are with subjugating people and how free software is the solution.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is trisquel using OpenSMTPD ?
Comparing distro package version numbers to upstream package version numbers isn't the correct way to determine if a security vulnerability exists within distro packages like this. Assuming that a program contains a security problem they are commonly fixed by backporting only the actual security patch itself and leaving it at the same version. An example is this here: https://www.debian.org/security/2020/dsa-4611 Debian fixes it in version 6.0.3p1-5+deb10u3. And so: Someone that only compares version numbers would see "Oh noes - I have 6.0.3p1 which is less than 6.6.2p1 and so I am still vulnerable" when in fact they are not.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
If you have something that needs the kernel headers that can be done by installing the appropriate -headers package. I think earlier you installed linux-libre-5.4, so that it would be linux-libre-5.4-headers. Maybe I should mention this on the website just in case. The kernel headers are (currently) not installed by default. It's not clear to me if they should be or not. I've done it both ways over the years where they are and aren't. I usually get feedback from people both ways saying both yes and no.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
"Because, as Chaosmonk points out, getting the latest and greatest kernel versions isn't that useful for an old 32-bit laptop" There can still be other benefits, like new (non-hardware) features in the kernel. An example is how 5.4 has various filesystem improvements.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
Would it be a good idea to have an interactive prompt from the package manager? I'm thinking perhaps a few different types: * One might start appearing, say, 30 days before it becomes end-of-life. With each new version during that time there would be a message with an "OK" button. Is that a good amount of time? * The very last kernel version would say it has reached end-of-life and is no longer supported. But: This depends on people applying updates timely; I've heard of some that don't. If they don't apply updates within that 30 day window they'd miss it. And, once an version has reached end-of-life I usually remove it after a week or 2 to keep the APT repository small, so people could miss the last version entirely if they don't update before I remove it. Also, you can tell the package manager to now show interactive prompts. Thoughts? Ideas?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
It's probably also worth mentioning that checking GPG signatures is also what the package manager does when you install programs from the Trisquel repo.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
Who knows. Didn't it happen with GNU/Linux Mint? https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2994 Don't forget that kernel.org was also compromised. If someone cracks a server to replace the downloadable programs they could also replace the checksums if they live in the same place. The attacker already has access to do the first and, if the checksums live on the same server in the same place, it would not be hard to take the additional step to change them to match. So; all that checksums give you is that the file was downloaded without some accidental corruption; it does not tell you that it's the same file that was originally uploaded. For that you need something else like the GPG signatures I mentioned earlier.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Verifying install files (Zotero)
It's not helpful when the attacker can both add their own malicious version and also alter the posted checksums so that they match. A better option is probably things like GPG signatures. Assuming that you trust the key (which is a whole different topic with assorted issues) then you can verify that a given file was signed with a given key.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
If you install linux-image-5.4.2-gnu for example you will forever be stuck on 5.4.2 so that's not what you want to do. The idea is you don't install the linux-image packages directly but one of the metapackages, which then pull in the linux-image packages as a dependency. Those metapackages are the ones that enable you to get updates to newer versions according to whatever sort of upgrade rules you want. They are described in detail in the table on https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ along with the upgrade rules that go along with them. Find a rule (aka "use case") you like, and install the package shown.
Re: [Trisquel-users] open source wifi dongle?
"(all three were advertised as "works with linux")" They may be dependent on proprietary firmware, as nadebula.1984 mentioned. Check out the FSF's RYF program. It seems to contain 3 with external antennas. https://ryf.fsf.org/categories/wireless-adapters
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
Sounds like the keyring package was also removed when the kernel package was uninstalled. Do: wget -O - https://jxself.org/gpg.asc | sudo apt-key add -
Re: [Trisquel-users] rtl8723be wifi card
Then it probably needs a proprietary program in order to function, which is why it does not work. It should be possible to confirm this by doing: dmesg | grep -i deblobbed And then share the output.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
What happens when you try?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
"which is a metapackage that always depends on the latest 4.14 kernel, so you'll get security updates to 4.14 but won't get upgraded to a newer kernel for as long as 4.14 is supported." More like "won't get upgraded to a newer kernel ever, even when 4.14 is no longer supported." Once 4.14 is no longer supported the updates to the linux-libre-4.14 metapackage just stop; i.e., it doesn't get updated to pull in a newer one. Thus, the onus is on the people using it to decide when/if to move off of 4.14.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
There are a few questions in this. It will take some effort to unpack them all, so here goes: There was an announcement back in (I think) April 2018 that LTS kernels would be supported for 6 years. Well, it turns out that's not entirely true. Well, maybe it is. What seems to happen is that LTS kernels start off with 2 years of support only, and then later get updated to add 4 more years later on. That (going from 2 years to 6 years) happened with 4.14 back in July: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/docs/kernel/website.git/commit/?id=a294222b772df262eb284c0503f6a6070f5bb22a So far, every LTS kernel that's come out since then has been given the 6 year treatment (4.4, 4.9, 4.14) but 4.19 and 5.4 have not, or at least have not *yet*. Will they in the future? I do not know; all I can say is that they're not listed that way right now but that doesn't mean the extra 4 years won't be added later like it was for 4.14. Anyway, I was able to duplicate this problem and believe it has been fixed in version 5.4.0-gnu-2.0. It would be helpful to test that, as it seems to be fixed for me now. To answer the other involves consulting the table at https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ As you can see, the package called linux-libre-lts always gets you the "current" LTS. This would be why you were upgraded to 5.4, since that is an LTS version. If you want to stick with an a specific LTS version, the way to do that would be to uninstall linux-libre-lts: sudo apt purge linux-libre-lts (otherwise you'll be getting prompted soon to upgrade to 5.4.1 soon, as I am currently compiling that version as I write this message) and install one of: linux-libre-5.4 linux-libre-4.19 linux-libre-4.14 linux-libre-4.9 linux-libre-4.4 The package names that contain a specific version number like those will cause you to stick with that kernel series only. If you should decide that you want to move to another LTS in the future it will be on you to decide both when and which one, since you won't be automatically moved anymore. BUT: I encourage you to re-try 5.4 since I believe the problem has been fixed with 5.4.0-gnu-2.0.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
I believe that the bug you reported is now fixed in kernel version 5.4.0-gnu-2.0. This has been uploaded to the master server: http://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/pool/main/l/linux-5.4.0-gnu/ and the mirrors should sync over the next 24 hours.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 does not boot after updating and upgrading
This does not appear to be a kernel bug. If you'll notice, the problem seems to be with the init system. When the init system is killed, the kernel does indeed panic. This is expected behavior. It might be useful to see if there's anything earlier that wasn't photographed that might explain why.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8.0 mini recognizes ath5k as wired ethernet adapter

Correct; I had it stated correctly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how do I increase the available space for this part of my harddrive?
Or instead of encrypting the home directory encrypt the entire drive. Then you don't need to deal with / and /home being different partitions as they are showing in your screenshot and then potentially running low on space with one while the other might still have gobs and gobs of space left. That requires using the netinstall image which, last I checked, has been broken for about 8 months now. Welcome to Trisquel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Notebook 15.6'' for LibreBoot 500 usd or less?
If you want libreboot you are limited to exactly those devices mentioned on https://libreboot.org/docs/hardware/ and no others. If you want any of those devices the next step is how to find them. I imagine finding them locally may be hard since they are older but there are companies that they can be ordered from for shipping. An example is http://www.libiquity.com/ and https://store.vikings.net/ and https://minifree.org/ and https://technoethical.com/

Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever
Agreed. There should be some sort of limit to disassociating oneself from RMS; otherwise the logical conclusion seems to be to remove oneself from anything he ever had anything to do with at all which would seem to mean that one has to stop using any free software at all and go use 100% proprietary software because the entire free software movement itself came from RMS. That's absurd, of course, but it shows that there should be some sort of limit on this disassociation. Not agreeing with this positions that one doesn't agree with but agreeing with other positions (like free software) seems a sufficient line to draw to not have to go into absurdity.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Richard Stallman Does Not and Cannot Speak for the Free Software Movement
The reports contain distortions and falsehoods. I urge people to read what he actually wrote (the full unedited thing and not just quotes from places in order to see the things in their full context) and think about it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Off-topic: The end of Freedom in GitHub
They say it doesn't apply to them: "Fedora software in source code and binary code form are publicly available and are not subject to the EAR in accordance with ยง742.15(b)." Most of GitHub is probably also "publicly available" too and exempt. But, Microsoft takes it further than they need to. They could for example do something like this and not block people at all by just saying "If you use GitHub you promise you're in one of those places...": https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.en.html#ExportWarranties The FSF has a good explanation there. Besides; if you see a certain IP address it's hard to know that the person actually is in that country versus, for example, someone located somewhere else using TOR and their connection just happens to go through there. Assuming that an IP address equates to the ending physical location is faulty logic. In that case blocking these actually ends up blocking people that shouldn't be by expanding U.S. policy to include people that should not be affected.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Ubuntu/Trisquel binary packages
Right. Some programs need to be modified and the Helpers do that so that: The kernel needs to have blobs removed, Firefox needs to be rebranded into Abrowser (along with privacy changes made), Ubuntu branding needs to be changed, and more. In this way a person doesn't need to do these tasks manually each time a new package version comes out and you can achieve some level of automation, and "only" need to fix the Helpers when things break.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Off-topic: The end of Freedom in GitHub
There may be a slight misunderstanding. That's not quite what I was mentioning. Let's back up for a moment to what nadebula.1984 said. nadebula.1984's original statement that I was responding to about was exactly this: "I can publish a GNU GPL v3-or-Later licensed free/libre software, but I can also explicitly prohibit anyone from using it without violating GNU GPL." Let's stop there for a moment. Note their words are "using it", not "distributing it" but "using" it. As in, executing the program on their CPU. Perhaps that isn't what they meant (since later comments refer to distributing/sharing) but it's what they said because "using" a program is not the same as "distributing" or "sharing" it. Anyway, I was pointing out that a prohibition on "using" the program (i.e., executing it on their CPU) would be a "further restriction" within the meaning of Section 10. That's why I had quoted the piece like "This License explicitly affirms your unlimited permission to run the unmodified Program." So they can "use" it (assuming that they get a copy.) :) But yes, so would the scenario you mentioned.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Off-topic: The end of Freedom in GitHub
"can also explicitly prohibit anyone from using it without violating GNU GPL" A point of order: Publishing a program under the GPLv3 and including that would probably be a "further restriction" within the meaning of section 10 of GPLv3. This seems similar to what happens when programs are released under the GPLv3 but say they're only for "non-commercial use" or "personal use only" or some such thing. The GPL's answer to these types of situations is: "If the Program as you received it, or any part of it, contains a notice stating that it is governed by this License along with a term that is a further restriction, you may remove that term..." :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Off-topic: The end of Freedom in GitHub

Re: [Trisquel-users] Hardware Recommendations
"Intel iCore Series or newer" Software freedom and this are mutually exclusive, so please pick one or the other. Newer Intel machine have fatal freedom problems: https://libreboot.org/faq.html#intel If you're willing to give up the laptop form factor you can get some powerful machines like the KGPE-D16 or POWER9 stuff.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel instruction set architecture support: i386, amd64, arm, arm64, risc-v and open power?
"Maybe there are some efforts underway, but nothing is official yet. Just because there is no image to download does not mean, that packages are not build for other architectures." In this case it does: Trisquel only supports only x86 right now. Trisquel 9 is supposed to have support for ppc64el and ARM. I'm not sure which ARM since there are so many variants. But none of that has started and even Trisquel 9 is still only being built for x86. I don't expect to see Trisquel available for RISC-V until Ubuntu has implemented such support, which will probably be driven by Debian's support (which itself is still on http://ports.debian.org and not officially included even in Debian yet.) Given Trisquel's limited resources, tackling RISC-V would be a lot of effort to do on their own without having full upstream support behind them.
Re: [Trisquel-users] "curl: command not found"
Because sudo doesn't carry over: In the example command you gave, gpg using being run as root but when piped into apt-key, apt-key is running as you and not root. The correct way would be to put the sudo after the pipe, resulting in: gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | sudo apt-key add -
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Although installing some sort of "control panel"-type of software also abstracts away pieces and can hinder learning because all you're doing is click on a button that says "do it." Especially when someone's new and is interested in learning things, as GNUbahn seems to be. But if GNUbahn wants to go that route another one is http://webmin.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] "curl: command not found"
You're missing the program named curl. That's why it says it's not found. Because it's not there. :) The package manager can be used to install it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel instruction set architecture support: i386, amd64, arm, arm64, risc-v and open power?
"What CPU instruction set architectures (ISAs) does Trisquel support today? If I go to the download page today, I can only download images for Intel/AMD 32 bit or 64 bit CPU's. Are those the only two supported CPU ISAs?" Sounds like you found your answer. :) Trisquel 9 is supposed to have support for ppc64el and ARM. I'm not sure which ARM since there are so many variants. "Debian, the distribution Ubuntu is based on, does support RISC-V." Not officially. It's in "ports", which is unofficial. Debian has some requirements which RISC-V fails. https://ftp-master.debian.org/archive-criteria.html I imagine it won't "graduate" for a long time still; at least a couple of years. Maybe more. It's hard to say. Even ppc64 still hasn't despite having hardware available (POWER9.) The only difference between ppc64 and ppc64el is endianness. ppc64 is big endian and ppc64el is little endian. POWER9 can operate in both modes.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing newest Python on Trisquel 8?
You're stuck with either looking for an older version of Electrum that will work with your version of Python or installing a new Python. Good luck.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing newest Python on Trisquel 8?
Python 3 is also available in Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?
Try making a request to the Debian people about it through their bug tracker.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?
No. The firmware was never added in the kernel to begin with; it's a separate package to install.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Atheros 9271 chipset "libre" but "non-free" in Debian - why ?
That's because the firmware used to be non-free. And get this: Even though the free firmware appeared in March 2013 -- over 6 years ago -- the free version only appeared in a Debian release with version 10, Buster. So much for a distro that's supposed to care about matters such as software freedom, huh? Anyway, the package containing the free version of the firmware is firmware-ath9k-htc. If you have installed firmware-atheros then you really have installed non-free software -- please remove it. We don't have the source code or a free license for that version; only the newer one in firmware-ath9k-htc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
"The graphical ISO has a "text install" option that is the same thing as a netinstall." Yes, I didn't mention it because it too is borked.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
The Trisquel netinstalls are currently broken and have been for months: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/25533 It's sad; it means there's no way to do a minimal install currently. Your options are to use the graphical installer and then maybe remove packages after the install's done, install Trisquel via a chroot environment, or wait for the ISOs to be fixed. I have no idea how long that will be, since it's already been four months.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
Sure. But don't just take our word for it: You can experiment you know and learn from experience. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server
To start off with a web server install Apache. sudo apt install apache2 ta da.
Re: [Trisquel-users] No Wi-Fi on Asus Zenbook UX305
Yes, that's why. Your WiFi card needs proprietary software in order to operate, which Trisquel doesn't provide. If you don't want to open the computer to replace the WiFi card an easy option is getting a USB WiFi like this one, which does not need proprietary software: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb The FSF has given it their "Respects Your Freedom" certification: http://fsf.org/ryf
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why does Trisquel uses own mirrors, bulids own packages?
Trisquel has to have its own repositories for a multiple reasons. Here's one, from https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-system-distribution-guidelines.html to quote: "A free system distribution must not steer users towards obtaining any nonfree information for practical use, or encourage them to do so. The system should have no repositories for nonfree software and no specific recipes for installation of particular nonfree programs. Nor should the distribution refer to third-party repositories that are not committed to only including free software; even if they only have free software today, that may not be true tomorrow. Programs in the system should not suggest installing nonfree plugins, documentation, and so on." In the context of Trisquel, Ubuntu would be a "third party repository" because it's neither Trisquel's own repository nor the user's own personal repository. A second reason to rebuild in replacing the name. As far as replacing the name, I don't imagine Canonical would be happy if Trisquel were going around with the Ubuntu name everywhere, potentially confusing people into thinking that maybe Trisquel *is* in fact Ubuntu? Trisquel doesn't come from Canonical after all. Just like Abrowser is not Firefox, and Mozilla would have a fit if the Trisquel project were going around saying Abrowser is in fact Firefox. What's in a name? One word: Trademarks! A third reason to rebuild is https://sfconservancy.org/news/2015/jul/15/ubuntu-ip-policy/ "For example, Canonical, Ltd.'s original policy required that redistributors "needed to recompile the source code to create [their] own binaries"" And so since Canonical adds add (non-free) terms to non-copyleft things, that basically makes all non-copyleft stuff in Ubuntu non-free just because they're adding on extra terms to them. (Which as the article says was originally a GPL violation because the GPL doesn't allow people to add extra terms and even though that seems solved for packages under the GPL nothing changed for non-GPL packages and so their non-free terms remain.) And yes, Trisquel has its own build infrastructure. See https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-trisquel-made The last I heard I think it was in France? Or somewhere in the E.U.; I forget.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Things we already knew but the rest of the world is still learning now
Imagine you have a program running on your computer. Now, use your imagination to transfer that same program to (say) your WiFi card or your HDD/SSD and run it there. Because yes - those things have CPUs in them with RAM and are full computers in their own right. Some, like your HDD/SSD even have their own seperate permanent storage so that they can reload those programs when they get powered on. Other devices may have their own permanent storage or they may need to have the program re-transferred in to them the next time they get turned on. Intel's WiFi is like that, where the kernel has to re-transfer the program in to the WiFi card each time on boot.) Anyway, because it's moved to say a WiFi card or inside your HDD/SSD now it's "firmware." The only difference is where the program runs, which is not much of a difference. It's still software and still needs to be free the same as all other programs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Things we already knew but the rest of the world is still learning now
"The books will stop working." I am reminded of The Right to Read: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.en.html As time goes on Stallman gets proven to be correct over and over again.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Kernel 4.4.0-143 in 2019?
Would it be helpful if I had 4.4 in my kernel repository too so as to match versions? Currently the oldest one in there is 4.14. I mean, 4.4 is already available in a way by being in the separate extended-term support (ETS) repository since it's supported for 6 years. But no one seems interested to subscribe to the ETS repository; should I just move it into the regular one for free? Or if no one's interested in 4.4 at all I could just drop it and maintain the newer ones.

Re: [Trisquel-users] The best terminal?
My favorite terminal would be: https://invidio.us/watch?v=g8h2SenYOKc Don't forget that terminal refers to the actual hardware because hey; that's what they were. (Everyone seems to forget this.) That's why I refer to the physical thing. Perhaps you mean the software, which is the shell. And yes, there are many of them. I use GNU BASH; a UNIX shell: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bash_(Unix_shell)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can Trisquel share screen/video wirelessly?
"It doesn't have HDMI, only VGA" There are VGA to HDMI adapters. The usually also come with an audio plug so that the audio & video then get combined into the HDMI signal with the adapter (since HDMI bundles audio and video) and then shipped out through the adapter.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can Trisquel share screen/video wirelessly?
"Can Trisquel share screen/video wirelessly?" Such a broad topic. https://blogs.gnome.org/benzea/2019/01/30/gnome-screencast/ Requires a Miracast-compatible device and is too new for Trisquel to have it. Maybe another option is to look into aethercast. There are also wireless HDMI transceiver devices. Maybe that would be easier.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Install Unable to See Internal SSD
"Any ideas as to why the install can't see the disk?" Probably a kernel thing. "Ubuntu's install, recognizes the internal drive." Which Ubuntu version? And which Trisquel version? Trisquel 8 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus.) Did you try that specific Ubuntu version for comparison? And which installer? The text installer or the graphical one? "I even doubled checked, trisquel also has." To be clear, what checking was this? To see if the kernel module was loaded or something else? Does lsmod indicate that it's loaded?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Linux-libre 5.1 have support for ALC5651 audio chip?
Some quick searching on the internet brought up https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1816429 It may not be precisely the same problem but it can't hurt to try a newer kernel to see. It can always be removed. https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Linux-libre 5.1 have support for ALC5651 audio chip?
Kernel support for this has existed for several years already. Can you please give more information about what is driving your question?
