Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
>Could I install the same for a notebook? I don't understand.. I think you are joking.. :P Are you really asking me if you can install Xubuntu on a notebook? If so, then of course mate, why not. Actually, especially for middle or low ranged specs laptops and netbooks you won't find much better than Xfce.. It just runs smooth as butter consuming very little RAM and CPU resources. BTW, when a friend asks me to install a GNUXino on their laptop or desktop I usully go with Xfce. In fact I have to agree with the mate that wrote that the UI is between modern and classic and very intuitive and easy to use. It also just works, just like Mint. TIP: if you want to make sure you have the highest odds of NOT being phoned by your not very skilled newly GNUed mate at 11:57 PM because "For the life of me I just spent 3 hours and I cannot change the wallpaper HURRR " I really recommend for your own mental sake Lignux Mint..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
SuperTramp83 Mijo I JUST FINISH FIXING A DESKTOP, MY CLIENT wants XUBUNTU to be his operating INSTALL in this new HARD-DRIVE. Ill give you the results later this week. I got a DumQuestion? Could I install the same for a notebook?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
A proposal is just that. Implementing is another. Traditionally, Trisquel has had two variants -- default GNOME desktop and a lightweight DE (currently LXDE). MATE has been chosen and it's still in beta. I dare not hope that there would be another big change in the near future. Ruben should just nail it. Moreover, if Xfce was taken up as the default in any future release, the panel would still most likely stay at the bottom.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
woops, meant overhaul not over hall ^^^ :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
I am proposing this an option for the default release in future.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Also, the latest Xubuntu is 1.2 GB. Look here ---> http://mirror.exetel.com.au/pub/ubuntu/xubuntu-releases/17.10/release/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
I like Arc also! However I find that it makes menu fonts far less readable. Xubuntu's Greybird theme seems like a nice halfway point between classic and modern desktops. I think most people would feel comfortable with it. Although you and I find it easy to tweak desktop settings, it is not something a complete beginner should have to worry about.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Just have a look at how much space LibreOffice uses and you will see that most that is not "unnecessary". New users like to have all the bells and whistles by default. It is a shame modern software has become so bloated :(.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Because they would would be using Xubuntu components :P. A five year LTS is not really necessary for most cases either. Three MAY be sufficient, so that is a potential option.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
What do you mean by "cloud servers"? Like your VPSes?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
>My only complaint with Xubuntu (and XFCE in general) is how porky it has gotten, there is no reason in hell Xubuntu needs to be bigger than a cd image...yet the new version is more than a gig in size. download the debian net install iso and in tasksel select only to install the core system and xfce.. \o/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
>It is not that I do not like the default Trisquel look, I just think it needs an over hall. Well, de gustibus, mate. Maybe many dudes like it better. But yeah, everyone can tweak their DE as is best fits them, that's the beauty of it :) I love the looks of xubuntu but I really much prefer the Arc theme :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Trisquel 8 has had a complete overhaul. The chosen DE is MATE. Xfce can be installed easily via terminal wuth a few trivial commands. I don't think Ruben has the time to make several ISO's to suit every need and taste.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Trisquel 8 isn't finished and like all in development ISO's is bigger than what the final release will be. Never mind that we do have Trisquel Mini. The latest final release of Xubuntu is 1.6 gigsthe same size as mainline Ubuntu which has a full DE. Even Lubuntu is approaching a 1 gig image size. This is one of my big concerns with Trisquel keeping Ubuntu as its base, unnecessary fat.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
And how is that different than the 5 years of LTS support currently with Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
> Xubuntu is just a flavor of Ubuntu I know. >Trisquel already uses the same "base" as Ubuntu When I said fork Xubuntu components, I meant this as a way to get 5 years of full LTS support. In Xubuntu, they support their LTS modifications for 3 years, while the Ubuntu base packages remain supported for 5. This means that a Xubuntu LTS gets the same updates as Ubuntu LTS, minus the Xubuntu modifications.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
I know how to install Xfce, I am talking about a default user experience for newcomers. I do not think that Triquel has the wow factor that the Xubuntu theme does. It is not that I do not like the default Trisquel look, I just think it needs an over hall. Xfce works better in my experience and the Xubuntu guys have made it look gorgeous.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Well the latest Trisquel 8 ISO is over 2GB in size, so I wouldn't exactly call Xubuntu porky...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
I agree ... I use Xubuntu on my desktop, and it has got a bit porky. The latest install erased all my saved data, luckily I had backed up most of the really essential stuff to my cloud servers. (I use 3 of them.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
As the mate above commented it is just installing xfce4, xfce4-goodies and then applying the gtke theme and the icon theme, It literally takes 3 minutes :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Xubuntu Components in Trisquel 9
Xubuntu is just a flavor of Ubuntu, its the same o/s with different defaults. If you like Xubuntu it just means you like XFCE with a certain theme, all of that can be easily done within Trisquel. Here is a recent thread with links to wiki pages on how to do it: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-install-xubuntu-trisquel Trisquel already uses the same "base" as Xubuntu, there is nothing to change. My only complaint with Xubuntu (and XFCE in general) is how porky it has gotten, there is no reason in hell Xubuntu needs to be bigger than a cd image...yet the new version is more than a gig in size. That is completely absurd.
