I'm using Spideroak sync and backup. They are often endorsed as privacy and
security friendly and they might be. But they still have this little black
hole of closed software. I just heard of Syncany for the first time.
Anyone who knows about it?
Do you have other suggestions?
I would really like to setup a server and run OwnCloud by my self but so far
I haven't had the time to compensate for my my lack of knowledge and skills.
What can you say about Openmailbox regarding privacy and security? (though
the issue is cloud storage!)
For some reasons x200 can be flash easily while for instance x60 and MacBook
2.1 can

I'm not sure if it's famous or not but I use Shutter a lot.
When searching for answers for the same question I ended up with
Kolabnow.com. They are amongst the few services that are endorsed time and
again by privacy and security techies. They're on the fsf list as well.

What are the pros and cons regarding privacy and security?
Are there any issues I should consider when buying an Atheros-AR5B95 Mini PCI
card? Are some manufacturers better/worse than others? Will there be any
difference between products and how can I tell? Or should I just go find the
cheapest there is?
Thanks. I'll get one of those and see how it works. Unfortunately I don't
have Libreboot installed, but I see you do
That is really cool. Thanks for the post. Though it's out of reach for my
technical skills I would like to try it some day!
My bad. It was supposed to say "x200 can not be flash easily"
I've got an x200 and installed Trisquel on it. It works fine except for the
wifi. I seems that this card

would work with Trisquel. (is that true?)
Is there a better wifi
This is a cool thread. Thanks for opening it, Albertoefg
Thanks. I wonder why I didn't know about them earlier. If you know other
organisations, sites the like that works with similar objectives, please let
me know.
Thanks. I think I can manage that.
I've used grsync several times and it works fine. I was just wondering what
the 'make backup' option would do for me. I use grsync to make an exact copy
of my folders, files and structure. One advantage of this is, that I can find
any single file this way, without doing a full restore data
I use grsync to make copies of e.g. my home folder.
What is the difference - if any - from copying with and without checking the
make backup option?
Thanks a lot for the efforts.
Let's say that the wifi card from mt t61 fits my x200 (I don't know yet): The
card works with Trisquel on the t61, but would the white/black list be
different between the two machines?
I've tried to read me clever but so far I've failed.
When running grsyng I choose to copy files under certain arguments. One of
the advanced options is 'Make backup' [1]. Hovering gives the explanation
[2].
If I had an extra external harddrive I might just try, but I'm not sure I
would
On my Replicant device (and I have to admit on my Android tablet as well) I
often use Aedict, an excellent off line Japanese English dictionary. I was
told, that I can get to use it on Linux, provided I can run it in and android
emulator.
Does anyone know how to do that, and can it be done
So now I'm confused: According to SuperTramp83 I can exchange it, but
according to Ignacio.Agullo I'm stuck until I reflash with Libreboot (which
I'm not capable of).
I really hope SuperTramp83 is right!
SupeTramp83, please enlighten me...
I agree, but I would much rather find the argumentation or perhaps the way to
present arguments that'll make people knot, wonder and revise...
As I understand it Libreboot x200 is basically a Lenovo x200 running
Trisquel. The x200 (as well as the T400) are a bit old models. Aren't they
slow compared t other machines? I like the idea behind Libreboot very much,
but woory about the machines performance.
I also understood - please
Nice, thanks.
In an earlier post I was searching for ways to adopt the cinnamon DE
(https://trisquel.info/en/forum/cinnamon-de-trisquel). I solved that by
adding the linixmint repository, install cinnamon and deactivating linuxmint
repo again. I'm still to know if this approach holds over time
Thanks for all your comments.
Do you know anything about the difference in freedom/privacy whether you
choose a traditional hard disk or a SSD?
BTW: Are these machines that are build from new?
So

I don't know, 'cause I reinstalled
MATE is not an option but thanks.
I'll give it a try with the Mint PPA. If that fails I'll go the rough way to
get it.
Is there a chance that Cinnamon DE will be added to Trisquel PPA?
I saw that but I also saw some warning that one can really ess it up. If this
is safe (granted that I do it right!) I'll try.
I will, thanks
By the way, is this feasible and sane:
1) install the Linux Mint repository
2) install cinnamon-desktop-environment
3) remove the Linux Mint repository
?
In the first case I think actually could log in (so I forgot). As I remember,
after log in I updated the software and rebooted. But I'm pretty sure that I
didn't run anything from terminal though.
In the second case had just aborted grsync which I do run from terminal. So

Do you have any idea about how trustworthy any of the PPA's suggested via

I installed both sharing /home. Prior to the (second) incident of the problem

I've never tried building from source and have no idea how hard/difficult it
is. If it doesn't need a computer engineers exam I might try.
I also have no qualifications to tell which of the options you link to is the
best. I'll have to search some more but if you have an advice I
I didn't (and still don't 100%) know of this difference. But it seems to
explain issues that I have encountered earlier (with other distros).
I've found pages explaining this deeper and will study them soon.
Can you explain the diffence in easy understandable terms?
When I installed Trisquel for the first time yesterday I had an issue: First
I installed Linux Mint and then Trisquel, but I couldn't log in to Trisquel.
When entering my password I was returned to the empty log in dialog. I tried
to enter a wrong password on purpose and this was rightfully
Thanks for the correction (and please keep them coming). I'll remeber that
Totally forgiven.
As it seems you like linguistic details (I didn't even think of it) it might
be correct to use 'repos' instead of 'a repo' as the original sentence goes:
"Regular package repositories are usually referred to simply as repo."
By the way, how do you type in bold?
Sorry, correction:

I installed Trisquel first. I'll try editing the grub file.
I've often used sudo on several distributions without problems. But I'll dig
in to it, thanks
So far that's one of my aims. I'm not sure if I'll regret it later though...?
Hi.
I'm totally new to Trisquel. I've been searching for a free OS that would
suite my needs when it comes to functioning and being relatively straight
forward. It seems I've found that in Trisquel.
So far the only thing I miss is the Cinnamon DE. I believe I found a thread
concerning
I'm running a dual boot and want to make Trisquel my primary OS. It's now
secondary in my grub so I wish to edit the grub. When choosing how to boot
there is an option of editing the grub menu but I'm clueless of how to
actually edit. Can someone help with info or a link to info?
I actually plan to install a third OS. Can I still use your trick?
Do you have suggestions for easy and trustworthy how tos?
Thank. Updating the kernel did the trick. I still have no idea what happened
in the first place though!
I didn't install a kernel and I didn't remove anything but update-grub did
remove some lines in the grub menu. These may have been older kernels but I'm
not sure. I just installed Trisquel some days ago, so I wonder if there
should have been an automatic kernel update this soon?
In the
It sounds easy and others agree with you. But I've already got the Trisquel
theme folder in both /themes and .theme. Still it doesn't show as an option
under system settings -> themes. Apparently one can only add or choose themes
downloaded from within the settings page.
In my dual boot menu Trisquel wasn't first and I wanted to change that so I
edited grub via 'sudo nano /etc/default/grub' (and update-grub).
After reboot Trisquel doesn't recognise my wifi (network card), mouse,
bluetooth and probably more.
Is there a solution to this problem or do I need
I don't know if this is related but after the initial install and later after
a grub edit Trisquel didn't recognise my wifi (as well as my mouse and BT).
By suggestion of Magic_banana I updated the kernel and problem was solved. I
chose a manual install:
Let my clarify: I have more or less no computer skills. Yes, compared to my
mother and my friends I look like a techie, but that's like being the
one-eyed king in the kingdom of the blind. I believe I do have some flair for
it though and my main problem is that I have nobody to learn from,
I would really like that but I think it's out of my (technical) reach. When
looking at the files in each theme folder I do get the feeling that I might
relatively easy (not necessarily rapid though) learn to do it. But I would
need some guidance to get going.
For now I'll try fiddling with
I had a similar issue but unfortunately your suggestion didn't work for me.
I've seen others using this trick successfully so my issue is probably
different after all...
I had it working though. Please see this thread for my issue:
Thanks. Once I get some spare time I'll give it a try. I've never done it
before so it's exiting.
I've often heard people talk about sandboxes but I'm not sure of what it is
exactly. I imagine that is a kind of safe area, where your doings can't
affect the real system. Looking at the
As I don't have this problem anymore I can't really try your suggestions.
I would like to know though if this is a known issue? Can expect this to
happen again?
Searx doesn't show up in the Trisquel repo. Where did you get it and why do
you trust it?
This is an interesting and highly relevant issue. I always run into people
not understanding why I want to bother with the not always so easy to use
free alternatives. It's really strange to me that people take it so light.
I live in Denmark where we are used to consider our selves as a free
What does this mean? And, is it just like that when I download the bundle and
install, or shoul I do something to gain he benefits?
SuperTramp83, I'm not sure it's so special after all. I just couldn't find a
(good) screenshot app (using Ubuntu and Mint). I compared it to some other
apps and found Shutter to be very useful.
Still, I’d always appreciate other recommendations.
Hi.
I have a Lenovo t61 and a x200. The wifi card in t61 work well under Trisquel
but the one in x200 doesn't - I wish the x200 to be my main machine and hence
running Trisquel.
How do I find out if it is possible to take the wifi card from the t61 and
use it in the x200?
I might want to record my desktop in order to make small instruction videos
to my mother.
Which of the two will make it easier the the viewer?
Akirashinigawa was so kind as to make me a guide on how to install Japanese
input (Anthy). It's very straightforward so I think it qualifies for a how-to
guide on the Trisquel site.
How can I add it?
My main computer for work has broken down! The computer itself can of course

How do these compare to
I know it has not yet received the official RYF certification but isn't a

I have decided that I want to learn Latex. Amongst other things, I'll use it
to write academic articles.
Are there any recommendations? Of course I only want to install floss, but as
a beginner I am susceptible to ease and convenience.
Thanks. I've started to read about QEMU from your advices.
For me the best way to learn this is to just try. I would like just one
clarification, please:
I'm a bit puzzled about the references to qemu + KVM or Xen and from my
initial readings I don't learn much.
anyway, can I - being sort
It's not, but that doesn't rule out a Trisquel 8 problem as well.
Sorry, please elaborate: To work with qemu or on its own?
I have successfully installed xfce on Trisquel on a number of devices now.
Now I'm trying to get it to work on my 'new' T500 (not librebooted yet) and I
encounter a problem, that I met the other times as well. I am not sure how I
solved it the other times and I have no idea of why it
Thanks for your time and explanation. It helped a lot and I think I

Do you mean 'sorts' as in variants?
I'm lost about 'IDE'?

Hi.
So far I didn't get to the point of using VPN. Not that I didn't want to but
every time I stated to learn I quit since it was so difficult to get certain

If you know a good and thorough guide on how to use VPN for privacy and a
I agree with your analysis, Telinome. I just want to add, that when I had my
X200 liberated just when those things happened and Libreboot and Minifree
abandoned (!) GNU and FSF, Minifree was most reluctant to even help with
information about Trisquel installation. That might have changed,
On my T60 installed with Trisquel 7.0 and XFCE I can't figure out how to add

I've only got one user so far.

This is kind of stupid, but that's how learning works: I already created the
short cut via keyboard settings. I just didn't think - and didn't check -
that it works when using the browser as well.
Thanks aiding my learning.
Is it possible to add my own short cut key combination in Abrowser and/or
Icecat? For instance I would like to have a short cut to this forum.
I thought asking would make it easy :-)
If I get it right, the recommendation that all (!) agree on is qemu as a
backend. Is that correct?
And so far there seems to be three recommendations for a frontend: KVM,
GnomeBOXES and Xen. I include the latter because it's on qemu's list.

I just want you all to know, that Replicant 6.0 is now supported for S2 and I
just successfully installed it.
It supports wifi as well after a little tampering. I haven't had time to do
this yet, though.
Onpon4, you are absolutely right.
You can check the possible configurations here:

that distinction doesn't make sense to me.

I am so sorry - this is not the case any more. I have been away for some days

The current problem is that the hibernation key does not work. That might be

On libreboot.org these instructions can be found:
QEMU
Libreboot comes with ROM images built for QEMU, by default:
Examples of how to use libreboot ROM images in QEMU:

was very easy when first I figured out which screws to take out.
Thanks for your inputs.
