Re: [TV orNotTV] Super Bowl

2014-02-03 Thread Adam Bowie
Sky Sports in the UK carried Fox's pre-game show for three hours this year,
and it was the first time I'd ever seen it or any equivalent shows from
previous years. I just found the whole Obama interview toe-curling. While I
wouldn't expect any interview with a nation's leader full of soft pitches,
this was aggressive from the outset and just felt horribly out of place.
Set amidst lots of feel-good stories and celebrity fodder of the rest of
the show, it was just completely out of place. I actually changed channel
as I couldn't watch it. Perhaps it's the liberal in me.

I totally get that a network wants to maximise the marketing of its assets
with the unique opportunity that the Super Bowl offers, from giving a boost
to a new series in the post-game slot, to pumping the hype for a sister
corporation's movie. But there can't really be many Americans who didn't
know that Fox News isn't Obama's biggest fan. It just leaves a bitter taste
in half the nation's mouths I'd have thought.

I'm not really sure why there should be a serious news interview crammed
into the beginning of a sports event anyway. Even if that event transcends
sports to an extent and becomes a cultural touchstone.

[TV orNotTV] RIP Local TV News

2014-02-03 Thread chialex
I came across this article over at TVSpy, and it struck a nerve with me, not as
an amateur journalist on a third-rate website, but as an observer of things I
can't help observing.

Last week, I was on a cruise for my birthday aboard the Carnival Fantasy, which
gets its local TV feeds from Miami (sidebar: met a nice cruise director by the
name of Lindsey. In the off-chance anyone runs into her, tell her Dino says hi).

Back to Miami. I remember seeing an episode of CSI Miami's early seasons (a
name-changed reporter that covered a murder that he himself perpetrated)... and
again in a later season (pretty blonde reporter claiming she was a serious
journalist, followed by Emily Calleigh Procter giving her what-for about
working in a newspaper instead). Turns out truth nowadays is even worse than
fiction judging from the week of news out of Miami I had to watch.

But perhaps I ranted too much. Read on and judge for yourself.

Living in Pittsburgh, I caught up with this op-ed in the print version last
week. At this point, I think the writer is beating a dead horse. Rather
than just bemoaning the product and saying that they should better I wonder
if it is possible for them to do a better job any more. Let's assume that
people who need hard news for their jobs (financial sector, policy makers)
or just follow hard news will get information through the day on the
internet. People who just want to be in the know will have cable news on in
the background or will sit and watch for a half hour or an hour. And
studies have shown that people who watch local news are most interested in
weather and sports. The reason they put them in the second half of the
newscast is to encourage people to sit through as many commercials as
possible.

Local TV news has been going through the same budget cutting as newspapers.
And as the median age of the local TV news viewer goes up ad revenue goes
down. So given the depleted budgets and resources what would a better
newscast look like and who would watch it?

RE: [TV orNotTV] Tonight transition begins, and so do the layoffs

2014-02-03 Thread Melissa P
Yeah, but you get it – that if a show starts filming at 7, it’s not going to be
over in time to catch a bus. And, while I don’t mind long walks in the
daylight, I really don’t want to do it after dark on deserted sidewalks. I’ve
done it, but it’s spooky.

But it’s good to read that – finally -- LA is making progress toward using the
Universal City station (which has plenty of room) as transit a hub. I know
when I was there the last time, I wondered why more buses weren’t routed there.
The buses in DC have always been used well to transport riders to subway
stations. From what you say, it seems that LA has finally caught on to the way
it’s done.

I’ve used the 222 many times after shows at Warner Brothers, since I usually
stay in Hollywood. However, when it’s going to arrive is always a crapshoot.
It stuck to the schedule better when it was routed between Burbank Airport and
Inglewood.

There’s also service at least ‘til midnight on Ventura, which takes care of the
CBS Studio. It’s only Disney that’s a problem.

Line 155 -- which a few years ago replaced the Line 96 on Riverside Dr. you
remember -- runs until 9:00pm in the vicinity of the Media District going back
to Universal City Station.

After that, the only service in the area is Line 222 on Hollywood Way (a bit
over a mile walk from Disney) which has service operating to Hollywood/Vine Red
Line Station until around 12:45am.

One important question: When does the bus stop running? Is it after 10 pm, or

Today is still under the news division, yes. And those of us who lived

journeyman anchor, starting with the 6-7am Today in NY shift, moving over
to read the news on the Today set, then running back up to the 6th floor
for Live at Five.

Perhaps FOX isn't the only network not particularly interested in boosting
their news division with the Presidential interview?

Don't we get the pleasure - again - of avoiding part 2 of this genital

Except - even though Lauer was not an evening news anchor, he is the
anchor of a news show (I assume Today still is run by the News Division at
NBC? As I recall Good Morning America is not, but I think Today is). The
argument as I understand it is that the opinion shows at FN are not really
to be considered part of the news operation. Having O’Reilly do the

I agree on all fronts. Bakula is a watchable actor used to ensemble work.
And to state that Enterprise had flawed writing is an understatement,
like saying the Titanic hit an ice cube. I am concerned about too much of

Harmon and his gang weekly, but I only rarely check in to see what the boy
wonder is doing in LA. It isn't that I dislike the LA series -- I just

Good point. But I notice that while I have the entire current season of CSI
on my DVR unwatched so far, I am up to date on both NCISs. CSI went for a
fairly subtle sub-branding of each flavor, while the two versions of NCIS

will be interesting to see if they are able to give NOLA a unique stamp.
