Which pretty much sets up WGN-TV losing the Cubs, as well. However, I have the feeling that the Ricketts will be holding up Comcast (the dominant cable player in Chicago) for their own channel, like YES for the Yankees and TWC SportsNet in LA for the Dodgers (although I can see Fox going after the Cubs to place on their MyNet station WPWR). And Chicago sports, like WGN's local newscasts, seem to be coming to an end on WGN America, as the Trib seems to want it to become a big cable playa for original programming--and I'm sure they're convinced that the playa hatas who want the Cubs, Sox, Bulls and Tom Skilling over sitcom reruns and Salem are all 55+. With all of the hubbub over the real-life soap opera surrounding Casey Kasem's family, his long time business partner Tom Rounds died Sunday--he and Kasem, along with producer Don Bustany, created American Top 40 in 1970 and saw it grow from a handful of stations to 500 stations worldwide by 1982, when his syndication company Watermark was sold to ABC. Before Watermark, while PD at San Francisco Top 40 giant KFRC, he put together what was arguably the first big outdoor rock festival (which beat Monterey Pop by a week) and after Watermark formed the international syndication firm Radio Express (ironically, among other things handling AT40 with Shadoe Stevens taking over for Kasem after Casey switched to Westwood One). I particularly like to see Roman numerals used in TV and film production credits. In particular, the BBC sticks resolutely to using them. There was something lovely about programmes in 2000 just having (c) BBC MM at the end of them. Is there another sport, aside from the NFL, that uses Roman numerals like that? They said that the only current mass media use of Roman numerals is in the Super Bowl and movie/TV copyrights. As was noted in one of the articles linked by Bob, the Super Bowl is played in the year after the regular season. As the 2014 Super Bowl wraps up the 2013 season, using the year would get confusing, so the NFL just numbers the Super Bowl and they probably use Roman numerals to class it up. SoCal station KOLA airs classic reruns of Casey's show from the 70s and 80s very Saturday morning, I assume it is a syndicated deal. The way it seems to work is they broadcast an installment for the same week, but different year, with Kasem's original intros and outros intact. So I'd guess a large chunk of the series has been digitized and saved.
