I was thinking the same thing,and with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival coming up, maybe it seemed like a reasonable time for a hiatus? While I have no doubt that Oliver himself has more responsibilities carrying his own show than he did when he was one of a team at TDS, he's also a lot more stationary now (TDS would have him out for actual remotes on a regular basis, whereas the only remote he's done since LWT started airing was to visit Stephen Hawking at Cambridge.) As others have noted, I have kind of been expecting something like this, but I do think there may be a little more to it. Oliver sounded very strung out in the run up to the debut of his show, but as he begins to find his stride it does seem like he would have more, rather than less time for The Bugle. Didn't they start taping it on Thursdays recently? Here is my idle speculation, base on nothing substantial: Has been a bit of a strain in the Oliver-Zaltzman relationship lately? Maybe it is my own projection, or just fatigue on their part, but their chemistry has not sounded quite the same. I meant to respond to this part of Kevin's post as well. This would be a really hard choice for me, because I enjoy both. Before LWT began, I would no doubt have agreed with Kevin. But I think the show started strong and has only gotten stronger, to the point where if one of these has to go, I might be less sad if it were The Bugle. At first it was not clear how LWT was going to be different than TDS, but now it is pretty clear. Not only is LWT much more international, but it is also clear that LWT, unlike TDS or Colbert, is not a parody show at all. Oliver is not pretending to be a news anchor doing a bad job. He is in his own persona, just making fun of the way the media reports (or does not report) a range of important stories. I am not crazy about all of the taped bits they do to break-up Oliver talking to the audience - I see the need to do something, but I would rather see him maybe get a guest correspondent from a different country each week to do 5 minutes on their POV of an important story (maybe Saltzman could be a semi-regular in that kind of capacity?). -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Well, the press I've seen was pretty vague too. A 2-year deal was as definite as I could find. I'm *almost* at the point where I might subscribe to the HBO. it's just tough for me to justify it for a single half-hour. Should the YouTube output take a nosedive, I may fold. Instead, in pragmatic terms, Oliver found himself with two topical shows, having to choose which show got his best material. The Bugle is produced earliest in the week, but he gets next to no money for it, so he found himself saving his good stuff for HBO, which wasn't fair to the Bugle. I think if you look at recent Bugles, there is more reaction from Oliver than contribution.
