After watching the pilot, I'd say that the script and overall concept of Gotham were incredibly heavy-handed as far as shoehorning in clumsily ret-conned early origins of Batman's Rogue's Gallery - although the art direction was good, Donal Logue was great as the corrupt cop Harvey Bullock, and the kids playing Selina Catgirl Kyle and young Master Bruce were quite appealing too. Ultimately, it was bullshit to this longtime comic book fan, while the pilot to The Flash, although moderned-up, recalibarted and connected to The CW's post-Smallville Green Arrow series Arrow, was far more satisfying and true to the source material. Well, the Comcast On Demand seems to be about as helpful as Hulu for that kind of thing - as far as I can tell Hulu only goes back 5 episodes or so for current shows that it covers. I prefer though to have episodes of shows I am really following on my DVR; in most cases I let them build up and binge watch series one at a time, rather than just keeping up with a show week by week (a few exceptions for something like Mad Men or Breaking Bad). I concur that the female cast members are, in general, good - especially Kate McKinnon. I was skeptical at first, but McKinnon won me over quickly (with one line as the old Italian mama in the Jon Hamm - Lawrence Welk skit). She's fearless and funny and freaky. That said, I do agree that the writers need to step up their game. Kelly from the Clue Crew serves as announcer. There was one category that I think should have included quotes in the title, but the gameplay isn't radically different. I found it interesting that they are spending a lot more time with the contestants and that there are one-third fewer questions than on the mothership. The program run time seems as long as Jeopardy! And while I've made it to the audition stage for the regular show, I doubt I'd pass the test for Sports Jeopardy! (same goes for what I remember about Rock and Roll Jeopardy!). I watched the first 2 shows that were on Monday evening. It's also on here at 10:30 am. I would maybe watch again if I happened to see it on, but I don't think it's worth the DVR time and space to try to record every day. The problem with a show like this is that either it has no authentic technical advisors, or it desperately needs to fire the ones it has. In the '80s you could have a show like Whiz Kids where a teenager sits in his bedroom and rat-a-tats on a keyboard and stops a missile from launching. In those days nobody questioned it. But if a series in 2014 is going to open an episode with a title card indicating it is based on true events, then it needs to have a solid footing in reality. I didn't dislike the series, but the stereotypes need to become full-fledged characters quickly or I'll lose interest. Waitress Paige is the only likeable adult in the bunch and all of the characters are thinner than the plot (except maybe Mechanical Genius Asian Lady) but I'll give it a few more tries before I unset the recording. Of all the computer stupidity in the show (and there was a season's worth of 24-level computer stupidity packed into that hour) why didn't the airport just get the backup from the vendor that supplied the update? No company certified to do any business with anything larger than a lemonade stand will be anything but awash in a sea of backups and previous versions. Also, that's not how airplanes work, how wi-fi works, how analog cellphones work, or how even the loosest government contracting works. First of all, almost nobody on this show is anywhere near as attractive as the people on Numb3rs (who were admittedly as a group absurdly attractive) with the exception of the marginal character here who was actually also on Numb3rs. Second, while I don't know much about puters, I know enough about psychology to know that the computer hack is not the only thing ridiculously simplistic and inaccurate in this pilot. Third, whoever is creatively behind this show is not very good at writing dialogue or plotting narrative, but has a knack for basic story. At several points when I was about ready to give up on this, I was hooked back in by just a few nice touches. The story is not really about geniuses using their big brains to stop bad things and people, but the thing at the end of the pilot, where they make the deal that they will translate the kid to the mom, and she will translate the world to them. That's pretty good - if only the person who came up with that could hire someone who knows how to write dialogue and shape plot development. But then, I guess if they had that complete package this show would be on AMC or FXX. Instead it is on CBS, and I saw enough to get me to give it a few more episodes and see if they can do better when they don't have to carry the burden of explaining the show.
