Admittedly the series lost a lot of steam when Hagman passed away, but I liked
it and the younger cast really matured as actors on the screen. Just as the
original series opened doors for a lot of actors, I think we'll see more from
this cast in years to come.

I’ll miss the fact that Judith Light (b.1949) was playing Mitch Pileggi’s
(b.1952) mother.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Scorpion

2014-10-04 Thread PGage
So, I decided to check out episode 2 on my DVR this morning while going
through some email. At the 30 minute mark it suddenly shifts to a promo for
Dave, and then the very start of NCIS:LA (starting with the Previously
on). It continues with the opener for the episode, goes to commercial, and
then returns to Scorpion - elapsed time on my DVR of 4 minutes. I was able
to go to On Demand and see the missing portion. While it cut out prior to
Scorpion breaking for commercial, it seems to have rejoined at the point
where Scorpion returned from commercial.

Over the many years of participating in this list I think have learned that
things like this happen because someone punched the wrong button in some
kind of switching station or something (or maybe it was just a computer
glitch) and the start of NCIS:LA was selected instead of the next segment
of Scorpion. But I have a couple of questions. One, why would Scorpion have
cut out prior to going to its commercial? Does that suggest that someone
not only punched the wrong button, but punched it too soon? Two - did this
happen nation wide, just in the Pacific Time zone, or maybe just in the San
Francisco area? Or could the mistake have been with my cable provider
(Comcast)?

The mom looked a little different this week but I could not put my finger
on it. I am starting to resent the emotional manipulativeness of this show
a lot. I could put up with it, and maybe even appreciate it, if the makers
put half as much effort into the plots and character developments and
paying off on the promise that their characters are super smart as they did
into yanking on heart strings - but they seem intent on not.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: NoTV: CBS Plays Let's Make a Deal with Beasley w/out Wayne Brady

2014-10-04 Thread Mark Jeffries
Out there on YouTube, there's a video of Anne's mother Kate McCauley
belting out Maybe Next Time. I didn't realize her connection as daughter
of Joe McCauley, but I have to admit that I hadn't thought of that name in
years. My main memory of WIP from my childhood time in South Jersey was
the for the Metropolitan area jingles (which I assume were on all other
Metromedia stations back then--Metromedia's broadcasting name at the time
was Metropolitan Broadcasting).

And I guess CBS also owns WBFS in Miami, which is the MyTV affil, not the
CW affil, as you might think for the second CBS-owned TV station in a
market--Tribune Media owns the CW station in Miami.

Very interesting move here in Philly.
When CBS and Westinghouse merged, Westinghouse had to sell rock powerhouse
WMMR-FM to avoid FCC monopoly charges. Looks like they're jumping through
hoops this time to avoid having that happen again.
Re the WIP move: I'm guessing that the FM station will get to keep the
call letters... which is a shame, since it's only had the call letters for
three years, while the AM station has been an important part of the city's
history since 1922. (Did you know actress Anne Hathaway's grandfather was
WIP's Morning Mayor in the fifties and sixties? Well, now you do.)
Back in the seventies, WIP, which was then a music station owned by
Metromedia, ran the CBS Radio Mystery Theater weeknights at 11, but changed
the name to WIP Mystery Theater so that people wouldn't think they were
the CBS station in town. My, how times have changed.

2014-10-04 Thread Kevin M.
All stations are digital now, and switching tends to operate remotely from
one of about 30 to 40 engineering hubs/routing stations across the country.
Such a gaffe would take place at one of those hubs. A computer is supposed
to be programed to know which router to select, which vyvx (or other
dedicated land line) feed to use, and when to make such a switch. It's
basic programing error that causes it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Scorpion

2014-10-04 Thread Ben Scripps
Most CBS affiliates have multiple (typically at least three) satellite IRD's
which feed into a small routing switcher controlled by CBS Satellite Operations
in New York. They keep primary control for localizing feeds for affiliates
(i.e. NFL Sundays or regionalized commercials during prime time) and have
control over what feed each affiliate is receiving; the weekly e-mails we
receive with procedures and whatnot always contain a reminder to call air
control immediately if we have to switch to a secondary or tertiary feed of the
network for some reason so that they can retune the IRD remotely to get us on
the correct regional feed.

Not having seen it directly, I'd guess that since it happened at the 30 minute
mark of Scorpion, whatever station PGage was watching was maybe running 30
minutes off the clock (i.e. prime started at 8:30 local time instead of 8:00)
while the rest of the network was on time, and CBS sent a trigger to switch
that affiliate back to the normal network thinking they were out of prime at
that point and into local programming. Just a guess...

Without providing any technical explanation, this brief note on Deadine:

confirms that the mishap occurred on the West Coast. It also reminds me
that NCIS: Los Angeles now airs on Monday night at 10:00, the same night as
Scorpion, which makes a little more sense (I was trying to figure out why
this would happen when NCIS:LA airs on a different night). The incident
occurred at 9:30 PT, and they switched to the start of the 10:00 show, so
somehow they skipped a half-hour
