That's EXACTLY the model. Think of it in terms of something we here are
more familiar with - why did Netflix give David Letterman a monthly show?
We know it has nothing to do with ratings since Netflix has nothing to do
with them anyway. In fact they don't care how many watch each show since
everybody watching is already a subscriber and they are not selling
commercial time. The value of a Letterman show is the association of
Letterman to Netflix which gives incentive to people considering joining or
sustaining their subscriptions. And that's what Apple is paying Oprah for.

2018-06-17 Thread Steve Timko
Howard Stern was furious when Sirius paid Oprah $55 million to produce a
half hour of original programming a week in which she appeared (is that the
right word for radio). All Sirius wanted was the ability to put Oprah on
its ads in Radio Shack and Circuit City to give Oprah fans the idea they
want a Sirius satellite radio. I get the feeling Apple is more interested
in having Oprah's name associated with their product to bring attention to
it than the content her production company will produce.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: are some Fox stations not carrying World Cup?

2018-06-17 Thread PGage
I have very much been enjoying the World Cup, and I do not really follow
soccer much outside of WC and Olympics. Fox has done a pretty good job with
it, and Mexico-Germany was huge here (California), but while the game has
finally started to get some traction, I dont thin we are yet at the place
where it will feel like an outrage to most American sports fans if a first
round WC match between Brazil and Switzerland is not available on broadcast
TV.

2018-06-17 Thread Adam Bowie
Speaking of reading recommendations, I don't think it's been mentioned
here, but I do recommend Joe Adalian's New York Magazine piece on Netflix:
http://www.vulture.com/2018/06/how-netflix-swallowed-tv-industry.html

It's a good inside read about how the business is run. I'm still a little
unconvinced about their long-term business model which is heavily reliant
on growing global viewers, which in itself means making lots of series in
lots of languages to reach local viewers (House of Cards and Stranger
Things won't cut it on their own in territories like India). So their
spending has to remain high, and they just have to persuade more people to
subscribe to them. That also means expensive marketing, because just seeing
a tile on my Netflix homescreen is not enough on it's own.

Anyway, I'm going way off topic. I'd still love to know what Apple's TV
plans really are. Just because they're doing something doesn't mean it'll
work. Beats 1 anyone?

2018-06-17 Thread Steve Timko
Born of blobfish joke, Cruz edges Kimmel in basketball game
HOUSTON (AP) - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has triumphed over late night TV host
Jimmy Kimmel in their much-hyped charity basketball game that Kimmel dubbed
the Blobfish Basketball Classic.
With each basket worth a single point, Cruz topped Kimmel 11-9 in a
two-hour one-on-one match they agreed to abbreviate Saturday at Texas
Southern University after neither appeared capable of reaching 15 points
and winning by two.
The Houston Chronicle described the matchup as "a slow-motion car-crash of
half-court basketball." Speaking for both men, Kimmel said: "We apologize
to the game of basketball."
The game was born of a joke from Kimmel, who has said the Republican
senator resembled the ocean bottom-dwelling blobfish. Cruz responded by
challenging Kimmel to a basketball game.
Two Houston charities are the beneficiaries. Game highlight videos are
planned for Kimmel's ABC program Monday night.

FOX also has the US Open golf tournament this weekend. It makes more sense
for them to show early games on FOX and later ones on FS1. Mexico, Germany,

What I've heard is that those stations couldn't figure out what to do about
their required E/I programming (for one, WVUE in New Orleans posted a note on
their website that blamed "FCC regulations" for the fact they weren't carrying
Saturday morning's Argentina-Iceland game, which is way oversimplifying).
