Re: [TV orNotTV] Two teams, three networks

2022-04-25 Thread Tom Wolper
Outside of the NFL it’s getting tough to find major league team sports on
OTA TV. The NBA has some games on ABC, ABC has a few NHL games between
early February and the end of the season, and FOX has a baseball game on
Saturday between late May and early July. Then there will be some playoff
games aired.

NBC will show the Premier League late game most Saturdays OTA, CBS has been
showing some knockout Champions League games (the others are on Peacock+),
ABC and FOX show some MLS games, and the World Cup tournament games will be
split between FOX and FS1. It’s become a lot easier to turn on the TV and
find soccer than the other sports.

Arlo, Lee, and Graeme Le Saux seem to get the marquee matchup each week
whether it’s on NBC, USA, or Peacock. I’ve been hearing a lot more from
Peter Drury and Jim Proudfoot recently.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Two teams, three networks

2022-04-25 Thread Adam Bowie
I still remember a visit to New York in '00s which clashed with the North
London Derby - Arsenal v Spurs. I had to do a fair bit of searching to find
a bar that was showing the game live and was open at 7.30am since it was a
12.30pm k/o in the UK! It being New York, there was such an establishment.
Today that match would be on main NBC.

So at the weekend my football/soccer-loving aunt in New York was able to
watch Arsenal v Man Utd on NBC, and that it comes with an actually really
good commentary team in Arlo White (ex-BBC) and Lee Dixon (former
Arsenal/England and still working for ITV in on FA Cup and England fixtures
in the UK).

BTW The reverse is essentially true in the UK with US sport, although it's
nearly all on subscription sports channels. The only free-to-air games I
can think of are the Superbowl and a couple of the London NFL games which
are on the BBC. The rest of the Beeb's NFL coverage is reduced to
highlights. Even random live US college lacrosse is buried away somewhere
on a channel here.

2022-04-25 Thread Tom Wolper
I guess this is a comment on what US networks think about soccer and how
valuable a property it is for them. The two teams are Liverpool and
Manchester City. They are currently ranked first and second in the Premier
League and the team in third is unlikely to catch either. A couple of weeks
ago they played a league game against each other that aired on USA as NBC
paid a ton of money for Premier League rights. A week later the two played
in an FA Cup semifinal and that was streamed on ESPN+. Now they are both
semi finalists in the UEFA Champions League and the semifinal games are on

Re: [TV orNotTV] CNN+ halts marketing, yet production continues on content

2022-04-25 Thread PGage
That may be, though since previously I was paying almost twice as much for
Xfinity for a 2012 delivery system for a 2002 business model, I am still
enjoying YouTube TV. We can not get over the air reception where I live,
and I do want access to things on broadcast and cable I can’t get
otherwise, or as easily (including ESPN, cable news, and sports).

Yeah - YouTube TV is a 2022 delivery model operating under a 2002 business
model. You still pay for a bundle of channels, a fair few I suspect you
don't watch.

There's a really good piece on CNBC which seems like the most balanced
reporting I've read on the whole CNN+ fiasco:

I don’t understand why anyone at CNN thought their viewers would buy
different CNN content that was streamed.

In college I used to have “CNN Headline News” on in the background
constantly. As background noise, at the time nothing was better. When I
lived in Central Asia, when I had access to cable, I turned on BBC World
News. It was even better background noise. Yes, they were both repetitive
but it was live journalism in living color when and where I wanted it.

Whether the “flagship” network is overhauled or the streaming content
is relaunched, if the focus isn’t on journalism, it is fundamentally
 flawed.
