[TV orNotTV] AP: Sony wants to buy Paramount for $28 billion

Sony Pictures and the private equity firm Apollo Global Management have
expressed interest in buying Paramount Global for $26 billion, according to
a person familiar with the details.

Sony would be the majority shareholder and Apollo would have a minority
stake, according to the person, who requested anonymity because details of
the offer have not been made public.

The Sony-Apollo offer was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The
Journal reported previously that Apollo had made an offer to buy Paramount
on its own but Paramount's board had concerns about the bid, including
whether it could arrange financing for a deal.

The Journal and others have reported that Paramount is considering a
possible merger with Skydance, David Ellison’s media company that has
helped produce such Paramount releases as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission:
Impossible – Dead Reckoning.”

Earlier this week, New York-based Paramount said that Bob Bakish would step
down as CEO of the film, television and multimedia company, to be replaced
by a troika of executives who will form a new “Office of the CEO.”

I think what’s unspoken about this Sydney Sweeney criticism is that she has
large breasts and they are often on display. I suspect the criticism is
that men find her attractive because of her breasts, not her face.
She doesn’t have a symmetrical face, but that’s what I like about her. I
thought the pre-plastic surgery Jennifer Grey was more attractive. After
her getting her nose fixed, she looked like hundreds of other bland
actresses in Hollywood.
People told Cindy Crawford to get rid of her mole and she didn’t. Lauren
Hutton had the gap in her teeth but she was till gorgeous.
I’ve only seen Sweeney in a few roles, and she did fine. Her SNL sketches
were good. I’ve seen her interviewed a few times and she seems thoughtful.
Not a bimbo.

 I won’t engage in the crass practice of rating the attractiveness of
 actresses in their mid 20s, but she is obviously not “not attractive”, and
 anyone who looks at her and pretends not to understand why she would be
 appealing to straight men is being intentionally obtuse. She may not be a

I wanted to comment on Sen. Katie Britt’s response to the president’s State
of the Union address.

I streamed her rebuttal with the sound on low. So I didn’t really hear it
live. But I glanced at it from time to time. My first reaction was,
“Putting her in a kitchen makes her look like a housewife, not a senator.”

What really stopped me was her creepy smile. She is a successful politician
but she can’t produce a decent smile? Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has the
same problem.

Afterward, I heard the recap of what she said. And how she said it. The
Republicans have known for four years they would be giving the response to
the State of the Union and this is what they offer? Especially after
previous flubs by Bobby Jindal and Marco Rubio.

It’s like someone gave her the assignment to connect with the public and
she proved herself incapable of doing that. It’s not that hard. Just speak
with genuine emotion. Not the manufactured emotion she stumbled through.

We all know the cold open for tonight’s “Saturday Night Live.”

attention for one reason.

I saw a clip on TikTok a couple of weeks ago where a talking head on a
podcast talked about the staying power of Taylor Swift. One person he
specifically cited as fading away was Katy Perry.

I knew Katy Perry wasn’t as popular as she was say a decade ago, but I
thought she was still up there. Nope. Her last two albums tanked.

The talking head thought part of the reason was because of her feud with
Taylor Swift. Perry tried to mend fences. I don’t know how successful she
was winning over Swifties. I’ve only heard Perry’s side of the story and
from that perspective Perry was right. Perry was going on tour and she
wanted to use a dancer that had been dancing for Swift as well. Swift
wasn’t touring at tht moment. Either Swift didn’t allow it or there was
retribution when the dancer returned.

Perry says it’s her decision to leave “American Idol” but I wonder if she’s
more of an anchor now for the show instead of an attraction.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly four years after Harvey Weinstein was convicted of
rape

and
sent to prison, New York’s highest court appeared torn at oral arguments
Wednesday about potentially overturning the landmark #MeToo-era verdict.

Weinstein’s lawyers urged the state’s Court of Appeals to dismiss the
disgraced movie mogul’s 2020 conviction, arguing that the trial judge,
James Burke, trampled his right to a fair trial

with
pro-prosecution rulings that turned the trial into “1-800-GET-HARVEY.”

“It was his character that was on trial. It wasn’t the evidence that was on
trial,” Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala told the seven-member court in
Albany.

Weinstein, 71, was convicted of a criminal sex act for forcibly performing
oral sex on a TV and film production assistant in 2006 and rape in the
third degree for an attack on an aspiring actress in 2013. He was sentenced
to 23 years in prison
.
Last year, he was convicted in Los Angeles

of
another rape and sentenced to an additional 16 years in prison

.

A lawyer for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which prosecuted
Weinstein’s New York case, told the appeals court that Burke's rulings were
proper and the conviction should stand.

Weinstein’s lawyers want a new trial, but only for the criminal sexual act
charge. They argue the rape charge can’t be retried because it involves
alleged conduct outside the statute of limitations. Reversing the verdict
would reopen a painful chapter in America’s reckoning with sexual
misconduct by powerful figures. The court is unlikely to rule immediately.

If the Court of Appeals were to rule in Weinstein's favor, he would remain
locked up because of his California conviction. Weinstein did not attend
the arguments but was said to be monitoring a livestream from the state
prison where he is incarcerated, Mohawk Correctional Facility, about 100
miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Albany.

Allegations against Weinstein, the once powerful and feared studio boss
behind such Oscar winners as “Pulp Fiction” and “Shakespeare in Love,” ushered
in the #MeToo movement

His New York trial drew intense publicity, with protesters chanting
“rapist” outside the courthouse

Weinstein maintains his innocence. He contends any sexual activity was
consensual.

His voice booming at times, Aidala argued that Burke swayed the trial with
two key decisions: allowing three women to testify about allegations that
weren't part of the case, and granting prosecutors permission to confront
him, if he had testified, about his long history of brutish behavior.
Aidala also took issue with Burke’s refusal to remove a juror who had
written a novel involving predatory older men.

Weinstein wanted to testify at his trial, but opted against it because of
Burke’s ruling that would've meant answering questions about more than
two-dozen alleged acts of misbehavior dating back four decades, including
fights with his movie producer brother and an incident in which he flipped
over a table in anger, Aidala said.

“We had a defendant who was begging to tell his side of the story. It’s a
he said, she said case, and he’s saying ‘that’s not how it happened. Let me
tell you how I did it,’” Aidala argued, adding that evidence of Weinstein’s
prior bad behavior, "had nothing to do with truth and veracity. It was all
'he’s a bad guy.'”

Aidala also argued that other defendants in the state were now at risk of
having their cases overwhelmed by extraneous evidence because “the
floodgates have been opened” by the precedent of Burke’s rulings.

The judges hearing Wednesday’s arguments volleyed between skepticism and
sympathy for Aidala and his counterpart from the district attorney's
office, appellate chief, Steven Wu.

Judge Madeline Singas suggested that the circumstances of Weinstein’s case
— using his power in Hollywood to have sex with women seeking his help —
may have warranted Burke's decision to allow the other accusers to testify.

But Judge Jenny Rivera wondered if the behavior the women described cleared
the high legal bar for allowing additional accusers to take the stand,
namely that their testimony is evidence of same motive, opportunity, intent
or a common scheme or plan.

Just a coincidence but Carano's most vocal supporter from The Mandalorian
cast during her dispute, Carl Weathers, just died.
It seems like the statute of limitations would have tolled but she got
fired after the second season aired.
Her IMDb page lists zero credits for 2023.

[TV orNotTV] Super Bowl ratings

So Super Bowl ratings will spike this year since Taylor Swift will likely
be there. She is scheduled to play Feb. 10 at the Tokyo Dome. That gives
her enough time to take her private jet to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl.

My question is, will this spike have a lasting effect? Will more people
watch the Super Bowl in following years, even if Taylor is not there? I
think it will.

Sports Illustrated has been a shell of its former self for years. I can’t
remember who said it first, but sports writing is some of the best and some
of the worst journalism. They don’t seem to have the money for good sports
writers and too many recently seem to be fresh college grads.

Sports photography used to be a skilled art. A photojournalist would shoot
a dozen rolls of film at a game in hopes of getting three or four good
shots. The latest mirrorless cameras can shoot 50 and even 120 frames per
second and autofocus has massively improved. For the last decade or so the
problem has been wading through all of the great photos turned in for the
best two or three shots. So great sports photojournalism is everywhere, not
just at the elite publications. Sports Illustrated lost its special place.

[TV orNotTV] Matt Rife and his Netflix special

Matt Rife’s Netflix comedy special is being vilified for misogyny. I didn’t
care much until Marc Maron’s sounded off on it during a discussion with
Kliph Nesteroff. The Daily Beast covered it in a story: Marc Maron Sounds

That got my attention. The article said it’s one of the most-watched comedy
specials on Netflix.

I decided a week or so ago to watch it and report about it to the group. I
watched the first 15 minutes or so. And now, a week later, I decided I’m
not going to finish it. Not because it’s offensive. Because it’s not funny.

Rife got a following through social media. Maybe those bits are funny. I
haven’t watched them. His Netflix special is just clunker after clunker, at
the “pull my finger” level. You could take just about any other comedian
who has a Netflix special and film them doing crowd work and it would be
funnier.

Spoiler alert: Here’s the joke at the beginning of his special that caused
the most outrage. A restaurant hostess is serving him. She has a black eye.
Rife said of course she has to be hostess, because if she could cook she
wouldn’t have the black eye.

It’s an old joke. Rife is telling a street joke in his Netflix special.
Whatever skills polished comedians have in telling jokes, Rife doesn’t have
them. I’ve written earlier about Dave Chapelle telling jokes that border on
being offensive or cross the line. But Chapelle has talent, improving the
joke with his delivery and his energy. Rife is flapping around on stage
like a carp out of water.

A few jokes later, he’s talking about women and astrology. I don’t remember
the exact joke, but he says in talking to a woman and the difference
between Jupiter and her is that Jupiter has a ring and she doesn’t.
Jupiter? A ring? You mean Saturn? Jupiter actually does have a ring, but it
takes sophisticated equipment to see it. Saturn is the planet best known
for its ring. Anyone with a backyard telescope can see it.

The Netflix special has strong audience laughter to his jokes. I wonder how
much of this has been sweetened. Then again, he was a hit on social media.
Maybe there are crowds that dig this kind of humor and Netflix was right to
give him a platform, at least from a business perspective.

There’s another comedian who was canceled because of his jokes. Shane
Gillis was picked to join the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” He got
unpicked after his jokes on a podcast were deemed racist and homophobic.
He’s making something of a comeback, I guess. He has a special on YouTube,
which I haven’t watched. But I’ve seen clips on his stuff on TikTok and he
seems funny. Unlike Rife, he knows how to tell a joke.

[TV orNotTV] Help needed identify comedy show I saw on YouTube

I’m trying to find out more about a TV clip I saw on YouTube. When I look
at my YouTube history, it’s no longer there. I think it was a YouTube Reel.

I think it might be a Canadian show. Kind of a cross between “Last Week With
Jon Oliver” and “The Daily Show.” It’s like there’s a panel of people in a
semi-circle on the stage. The host throws the discussion to a panelist. In
this case, it was to a woman who I’m certain was raised in the United
States. She looks like a shorter, younger version of Adele. She started by
giving a narrative of how Nissan is struggling. They used Brie Larson as a
spokesperson but were planning to move away from her. Then they decided to
stick with her through the latest Capt. Marvel film. That film is almost
DOA and Nissan’s marketing efforts look dismal. Then she did a bit about
Nissan needing its own superhero to rescue them. She has a fantastic gift
for mimicry. I’m sure she’s destined for SNL. It was a funny bit. I want to
share it on Facebook but now I can’t find it.

She speaks without a Canadian accent. There wasn’t enough discussion from
others in the clip to tell if they were Canadian. But it seems low budget.
I’m wondering if it got shared and then pulled back because it’s not
allowed in the USA? Or maybe it’s from a cable show or a streaming channel?

 The difference between Baldwin and Rittenhouse is intent. Baldwin did

In Nevada, it's the judge's discretion whether to make letters like that
public. Maybe they thought their celebrity protected them.

Their "apology" was scripted. Mila in particular looked obvious with her
eyes moving. They needed to take an extra half hour to rehearse.

I love the story Peter Frampton tells. A signed him and he put a few
albums out. One did okay, but not much from the others. But he had this
idea for an ambitious double live album. The record execs weren’t feeling
it and they were only going to put out a single album.

Either Moss or Herb Alpert would listen to an album before it got the final
go ahead to press it. Moss came to listen to Frampton’s album. He sat on a
couch or bench facing the speakers. Frampton was at an elevated table
behind him. Moss sat and listened to the album, not saying a word. The
album ends. Moss stands and slowly turns and says to Frampton, “Where’s the
second half of my album?”

And that’s how “Frampton Comes Alive” got made. He had to go out and record
three or four more songs to fill out the double album.

[TV orNotTV] Brief review: American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing

I recommend “American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing” on Netflix.
There is fantastic video of the event and the 100 hours following as they
track down the bombers. There was a lot about the case I didn’t know,
including heroic actions by police and other first responders as well as
inept police work.
But it almost lost me at the start. It is severely overproduced. The
dramatic bombing video has lots of drama yet they use a manipulative,
over-the-top score and too much fancy editing. I would have preferred a
touch like PBS's “Frontline” and “Nova.”
Lots of twists and turns until they track down the brothers. Check it out.

One pundit said FOX News’ parent corporation has $4 billion cash on hand.
So it’s a ways from being forced into bankruptcy or being forced out of
business. But I don’t think that’s true or OAN and NewsMax. Or Rudy
Guiliani.

I’ve been following libel suits since my early college days in the early
1980s and the one against FOX News is the most one-sided I’ve seen. Libel
suits are tricky. New Yorker writer Janet Malcolm fabricated two quotes in
an article critical of a psychoanalyst, a jury ruled. But while one of the
quotes was fabricated, it had the gist of what the shrink was saying, so
Malcolm got a pass. Gen. Westmoreland sued CBS over a piece that Gens.
Westmoreland and Harkins intentionally underestimated the strength of the
North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong. CBS had Westmoreland’s right-hand man
confirming it. But what stuck CBS is that even though you’re right, you
can’t leave the best part someone’s defense on the cutting room floor.
There doesn’t seem to be anyone who can challenge Trump for the Republican
nomination for president. The good news is that these proceedings may
declaw much of the right-wing media.

I read one Raymond Chandler novel as a kid. I don’t remember which one. So
I’m not sure how Philip Marlowe is portrayed in the books. I’ve seen “The
Big Sleep” several times and love Humphrey Bogart’s take on Marlowe. He’s
sly and maybe a little bit crooked, but not too much. Quite endearing. I
wasn’t a fan of Elliott Gould’s hippy Philip Marlowe in “The Long Goodbye.”
 The trailer for “Marlowe” shows Liam Neeson beating up people. I’ll wait
and see it before passing judgment, but I’m not sure I’ll like a brutish
Philip Marlowe.

I was also a fan of @midnight and I’m even a fan of Chris Hardwick. I liked
@midnight for the same reason I liked Lights Out With David Spade. It gave
me a chance to see a bunch of new comedians.
Hardwick’s company helped produce @midnight. It was part of his empire that
included his podcast and Nerdmelt. I wonder if he couldn’t do that at CBS.
