“Conquistador” with the Edmonton Symphony is easily one of the top five melds
of rock band and orchestra ever, maybe even the top one, and this is coming
from an unapologetic fan of the Electric Light Orchestra. It makes the turgid,
studio version from their debut album sound like a heap of guano.

Re: [TV orNotTV] ESPN’s Adam Schefter crosses a journalistic line

2021-10-14 Thread Bill Partsch
When you send entire stories to sources, you get no greater benefit than from
reading aloud/emailing/texting the relevant portions to them, but they get the
benefit of seeing what might be inside information they hadn’t known before and
then massaging their responses accordingly, i.e., covering their own asses. You
would then ethically be compelled to provide the same consideration to *all*
the sources in the story, at which point you’ve surrendered all journalistic
integrity.

Even giving the journalist benefit of the doubt, sending an entire story to a
source is just lazy.

I'm a St. Louis Blues fan, and it seems to me the announcers for the Blues-Wild

sense they're favoring Minnesota, but they seem to have a more inside
perspective on the Wild, and they sound like they work together all the time.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Any words on the Cubs' win?

2016-11-04 Thread Bill Partsch

When the English Premier League decided to implement a "review" system to
ensure correct goal/no-goal calls, it solicited bids with one requirement being
that the system had to be capable of communicating the correct ruling to an
official's wristwatch (or similar device) within one second. Surely, they could
build sensors into balls, gloves, bases, shoes, base lines, etc. to make
confirming or overturning outs (esp. at first and force-outs), foul balls and
home runs take a mere second or two, right? They can still leave it up to
managers to challenge before the system delivers its verdict.

I remember Buck doing a handful of Cardinals games per season on TV in the
years when his national star was rising, probably when Summerall/Madden were
still at it. He was really funny (witty, not goofy,) and genuinely enjoyable.
He seems to have left most, if not all, of that charm back at Fox Sports
Midwest. I'd love to see him cash out of the big gig at Fox and spend the
twilight of his career in his dad's shoes as the radio voice of the Cards.
Don't expect it, but I think he'd be better off without the yoke of neutrality
that he seems to struggle with.

I'm currently doing everything in iOS. My laptop bit the big one, and its
replacement is currently wrapping up its coast-to-coast journey, seemingly via
FedEx's AroundTheHorn service. I should have access to more comprehensive email

I do, I did, and I am. Odd I didn't get an email, though.

Follow up: I've yet to select a test date, as I have not noticed where I am
supposed to do so. Did I overlook something? If you nice people are already set
date-wise, I'll email the gods of Jeopardy!

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Hey, thanks for the heads up.

I was once in the pool, also. Pretty sure I stiffed the audition. My dentist
went through the audition process twice. First time, stiffed. Then he wised up,

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: 9/11/01 what did you watch?

2016-08-17 Thread Bill Partsch
I watched New York local coverage (interspersed with national coverage) at my
friend's apartment in Manhattan. Then, as now, I lived in New Jersey. My two
priorities when I got to my friend's place were to let my girlfriend know I was
alright and figure out a way back to NJ. I accomplished the former thanks to
AOL instant messaging. (I didn't have a cell phone yet, and it wouldn't have
worked if I had.) As four of us watched coverage, I was waiting for both the
subway and the George Washington Bridge to be re-opened. News of such came at
around 2-3 pm, and I took the A train (for free) to the bridge, which had
re-closed in the interim. It re-opened at about 8 pm, and I walked across with
hundreds of others, went to a pay phone in Fort Lee and called my girlfriend
who picked me up, whereupon we both burst into tears.

One thing you may need to consider when buying an antenna is the frequency of
your local stations' digital channels. In New York, I believe channels 7 and 13
actually got high-VHF slots, meaning a strictly UHF antenna would miss them.

Re: [TV orNotTV] World Series of Poker

2011-07-15 Thread Bill Partsch
My guess is, Days 1 and 2 are so massive that live broadcasts would be silly
and/or impossible to follow--in past WSOP, it has taken as many as four days to
finish Day 1. Also, the level of play would be like tuning into the World
Series of Baseball to watch a bunch of high schoolers (if that).

What I saw yesterday was interesting enough, but seeing every hand gives
viewers a little better sense of how the majority of hands in no-limit hold
'em tournaments end before the flop.

The most intriguing thing I saw was Daniel Negreanu (much beloved pro with
uncanny ability to read his opponents) folding a small pair when his opponent
raised big. He had to determine whether the bet indicated a bluff or a monster
hand. He guessed monster, he was right (opponent had three of a kind, aka a set
or trips), and because of the new broadcast setup, Negreanu was able to find
out a mere half hour later that his read was correct and that his agonizing
fold saved his tournament life. I can see where non-players might find all of
this monumentally tedious, but it's a great example of how poker really is a
game of skill. (Search for Negreanu on YouTube to see him look opponents in the
face and announce their exact cards without having seen them. He's like The
Mentalist, but for real, albeit limited to a specific environment.)

First, they are televising the Main Event live (but on the Deuce). Usually I
prefer live, but in the case of poker, it means they can not show the hole
cards while they are playing (most TV poker uses a mix of commentary recorded
as play unfolds, mixed with commentary recorded later - and it is only this
latter that is done with knowledge of the hole cards). State law prohibits
transmission of the hole cards while the cards are in play. After each hand
is over they are revealing the hole cards. This is interesting once in a
while (to guess along with the players) but it is much more interesting to
watch on a steady basis when the hole cards are visible. Apparently, the
players are also a little worried about having their hole cards displayed in
almost real time to their opponents (the players can't communicate with any
associates monitoring the action on tv for 30 minutes after the play). I
guess to hedge on this, ESPN moves between two different tables, so only some
of the play of each player is revealed. It also means that, unlike in recent
years, we are not getting look-ins at players at other tables. So even
though there are thousands of players in the tournament, we only see around
 20 of them.

A little looking reveals that ESPN3 is streaming Part 1 each day, then both
 ESPN3 and ESPN2 show Parts 2 and 3. I can't tell if I somehow missed Day 1
and Day 2, or if they did not televise those days at all. In the coverage I
have seen they have not discussed poker's problems so far, and have not
really given much information even about ESPN's coverage plans. Apparently
they are still going to stop the tournament when they get to the final 9 and
hold the final table in November - though this seems odd, since it seemed
that they did that so they could string out 2 hours of taped and produced WSP
Main Event coverage every week from August to November to lead up to it. This
makes me think that maybe they are still going to have their regular recorded
coverage, in addition to this live coverage? If I knew they were going to do
that for sure I might skip the rest of the live coverage and wait for the
 recorded package.

Given that Scottish Conan Guy was Craig 2.0 around here for a while, this

Can't we just ignore him? Please?
