Sidebar: I have given up on Apple and will not be giving them another
penny after a crazy situation involving poorly-integrated two-factor
authentication. I'll shift everything over to Windows, Plex, Google
Drive, and Android TV.
If you'd have told me ten years ago that I would completely abandon

Getting to Stage 10 is not an accident (except for that one guy who
made it twice, but we don't talk about him). 

You take a test. You pass the test and are randomly chosen for a
callback. You take TWO more tests and play a mock game. Then you spend
18 months of your life hoping lightning strikes twice. It does, and
then you get the Call. 

Being on Jeopardy! is the culmination of a lifetime of mental
fortitude, knowledge, luck, and courage. Just getting the call is
reason for celebration.

As much as I love to watch Jeopardy and bitch and yell at contestants
who give wrong answers, I know that if I ever got on the show my
performance would be closer to Priscilla's than Ken Jennings'. I think

When the story first broke I was going to predict Gillies was toast. I
didn't because... who knows these days? But as I was watching Country
Music and they were showing blackface entertainers in the late 19th

split, with the rest of the company (MTV, BET, Paramount Pictures,
etc) taking the name "Viacom" as a completely new entity. Now, with
this merger, they're putting the band back together, the way it was 15
years ago.

Viacom has already started doing ad drops (I know this because they've played 
in between Words with Friends games on my AT phone). 

History doesn't repeat, but it often rhymes; AT will follow with their ad 
drops. The two sides will come to an 11th hour agreement. Your bill will go up.

Suddenlink by Altice tends not to abide by the calendar when
moving/dropping/adding channels; most recently, two of three
subchannels from our CBS affil were added early last month. (Grit
[13.4] was left out.)

But of note was a switch from Music Choice to Stingray Music this
morning. For the time being, the music neighborhood of the DVR channel
guide is in disarray, providing listings of various subchannels from

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Friends From College

So here I am looking for something to watch while on the elliptical. I run into 
"Friends from College", I see Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Savage, and Cobie 
Smulders. I think "This looks like something."

It was ... something, all right. A look at a parallel universe where "Friends" 
was really really REALLY bad. The chemistry may be there, but rarely have I 
looked at an ensemble of characters and think "You're all TERRIBLE people."

Season 1 available on Netflix.

Hours before being named to the nominations list of the PGA Awards, Disney made 
official what many of us have known for some time: "Girl Meets World's" swan 
song will be January 20. 

I always thought that the show (and this may be my sentimentality talking) was 
a little too good to be constrained by whatever rules Disney Channel has for 
its originals. But sadly, it is what it is.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: "Legends... The Movie"

The first game show to be directly adapted into a movie, I suppose it's good 
that its run time is just over an hour, because anything more would have just 
been padding it to fill 90 minutes. 

The "legend" in this case is of Olmec and his two sons, each represented by 
half of the Pendant of Life. This, coupled with a few more references to the 
original series, makes it worth watching if you're a fan of the original 
series. Otherwise, you have to wonder what a purple parrot would be doing 
outside at the Temple Moat. Yes, references that would be best left innocuous 
are shoe-horned into the script.

A few "I see what you did there" moments:
- The Shrine of the Silver Monkey scene and the kids taking damn near forever 
to put the thing together.
- The Temple Run scene. Classic case of Chekhov's Gun, if you ask me.

Will probably be on demand by the time you read this at its original 1:20 
length. But hey, you've spent more time on less. :)

I can't say whether or not WRAL did the right thing. All I can say is, given 
the long and storied history of Capitol Broadcasting censoring and/or outright 
blocking programming deemed objectionable (except, of course, in the case where 
said programming turned a profit in due course), that to say that WRAL is 
stodgy is an insult to the concept of stodginess. After all, this is a 
60-year-old still locally owned-and-operated Southern television station that 
used to run editorials by Jesse Helms, now located square in the crossroads of 
urban NC and rural NC.

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Westworld

JJ Abrams' take on Michael Crichton's Jurassic-Park-but-with-robots 
(re-)introduces us to the flagship of the Delos Corporation's stable of 
android-populated amusement parks, though not strictly as for-adults as the 
1973 movie was... don't get me wrong, this show is full of booze, boobs, and 
blood, but there's always a kid amongst the "Newcomers" (and why is that, 
actually?). 

On one level, it speaks to the Crichtonesque commentary of chaos theory that is 
prevalent through his works. Sort of a Murphy's Law 2.0. 

On another level, it speaks to what Hollywood thinks of us mere mortals, giving 
us a backdrop of a stereotypical spaghetti western with hackneyed writing that 
is spoiled in perhaps the most brilliant way possible (I'm not going to say 
what, you'll just have to watch it).

On a third level... it's filled with anachronisms & oxymorons that will require 
multiple viewings (the bots wander the great outdoors, the humans running the 
show are left in sterile machine-like corridors of glass and metal... and 
that's just for starters). There is one key element that takes a hard right 
within the first 15 or so minutes. So if you think you know the show by 
watching the movie or looking at the clips online... you know nothing. :)

In short, if you've seen it, see it again. Or read a spoiler site or something. 
But if you found that the likes of Game of Thrones is over your head, don't 
bother.

But that's my opinion, YMMV.

This is a braintrust of the greatest not-ready-for-primetime television minds 
on the internet... so maybe they can help me out with this little issue.

This morning I woke up and noticed that my cable box, a Scientific 
Atlanta/Cisco 3500HD, was displaying the wrong time (it was 5am, the box had 
4:56pm THE PREVIOUS DAY as verified by the on-screen TV guide). Resetting the 
box did not remedy the problem, and additionally, every box in the house acted 
the same.

I programmed two shows to record while I'm at work, and so far as I know by the 
Time Warner Cable app, they did record. 

So... any thoughts out there?

Not to be funny but at least to be current and relevant - of course, since HBO 
only has to answer to subscribers and not advertisers, they can afford to be as 
irreverent as they want to be. And that's the problem with news on broadcast 
and/or basic cable. Somewhere, service to the public trust became service to 
those who give us ad revenue and God help us if we piss them off.

 One thing I'd disagree with: they call the bottom right seat on Match Game
 a seat reserved for women with offbeat sensibilities. I always called
 that seat the smart woman seat, next to the smart guy (aka Dawson's)
 seat, versus seat four, which was the flavor of the month female.

I've always called the panelist on that chair The Fourth Seat Hottie, a view 
validated by the appearance of Adrianne Curry in it during Game Show Marathon 
(she was way past her prime, but still hot, so...)

True. Our local Cumulus Radio outlet (Q98) has only remedied that recently.

the weekdays) they've added the calls to a standard radio sounder that plays at 
or near the top of the hour). It's easy if you have two seconds before the city 
of licensure. 

Of course there's always the Bob radio station on 96.5 that has the cutest IDs.

[TV orNotTV] RIP Local TV News

I came across this article over at TVSpy, and it struck a nerve with me, not as 
an amateur journalist on a third-rate website, but as an observer of things I 
can't help observing.

Last week, I was on a cruise for my birthday aboard the Carnival Fantasy, which 
gets its local TV feeds from Miami (sidebar: met a nice cruise director by the 
name of Lindsey. In the off-chance anyone runs into her, tell her Dino says hi).

Back to Miami. I remember seeing an episode of CSI Miami's early seasons (a 
name-changed reporter that covered a murder that he himself perpetrated)... and 
again in a later season (pretty blonde reporter claiming she was a serious 
journalist, followed by Emily Calleigh Procter giving her what-for about 
working in a newspaper instead). Turns out truth nowadays is even worse than 
fiction judging from the week of news out of Miami I had to watch.

But perhaps I ranted too much. Read on and judge for yourself.

Okay, so I took the test and ended up a combination of a Floridian and a New 
Yorker. 

Examining the evidence... 

- Born of Central American parents
- Army brat
- Raised in North Carolina.

So in short, I'm either confused or in denial.
