Thanks for digging those stats out!

It's one of those strange things that even with a heavily serialised show,
people will miss episodes. I suspect - but would need to find proof - that
a very lightly serialised show like BBT makes it a lot easier to dip and
out as you want. See also just about every show CBS broadcasts. Loyalty
*may* be lower, but overall reach is probably higher.

Re: [TV orNotTV] 2018 Emmy nom-nom-noms

2018-07-13 Thread PGage
Right. Each week 94% of Americans have not seen BBT, but a much larger
fraction saw at least one episode.

According to Statista, in May of 2018 29% of Americans said they had *not*
seen a single episode (I myself am in this group. In fact, I have only seen
1 episode, the very first).

Another 1% could not recall if they had seen even 1 episode in 2018. The
rest of the country was evenly divided between three other options: Always,
Sometimes, Rarely having seen the show.

So, while in any one week only 6% of Americans have seen BBT, in this
season 70% saw at least a couple of episodes. It would be interesting to
know if that larger number tracks a show’s weekly ratings, or if some shows
are sampled at a much higher rate than even the most popular show (probably
something like 60 Minuets, or maybe the bigger Reality Shows?).

The stats nerd in me wants to point out that this isn't quite correct.

The *average* episode may have been watched by 18.9m or so viewers, but a
multiple of this will have watched *at least one* episode across the
season. It won't be the same 18.9m people every week. (I did have a bit of
a look to find this actual number but couldn't find it).

Re: [TV orNotTV] 2018 Emmy nom-nom-noms

2018-07-12 Thread PGage
I don’t know - the nominations for dramatic and comedy series seem pretty
good to me: The Americans, The Crown, Handmaid’s Tale, Westworld, Ozark,
Atlanta, GLOW, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Silicon Valley. I have watched
all of these shows in the last season, enjoyed all of them, and found them
to be about as good as television has ever produced (I don’t think we are
in a real Golden Age of television, I think that has passed - but I think
we are in a very satisfying Silver Age.

Now it is true that none of the programs I have highlighted were on
broadcast television, and less than half were even on cable TV. This Is Us
and The Good Place were the best shows on broadcast this season.

A little perspective: "Big Bang Theory" was the most-watched scripted show
of the 2017-2018 season.

It was *not* watched by 94% of the people of the United States.

Everything else is crumbs.

This list just serves to highlight just how little currently-airing TV
shows I watch.

I think Ted Danson should win for his work on the Good Place. Beyond that,
of the handful of shows I watched that are on the list, I wouldn’t give any
of them trophies.

I'm too busy being annoyed at the inevitable "snubs" columns, which only
make sense if the writer is willing to identify which nominees shouldn't
have made the cut.

(Also annoyed at Michael Ausiello, who continues to demonstrate why
journalists need copy editors.)
