[twitter-dev] Trying to get rid of twitter spammers
Hello, I think there is a spamming action that uses too many twitter accounts and tweet by mentioning usernames and send as a reply. We receive thousands of similar spam tweets that are written as a reply to our followed users through streaming api. It spoils our data. What I don't understand is that apart from possibly generating clicks why are people doing this? Are enough clicks converting into some kind of ROI interaction that makes them money? I keep expecting SPAM to take some kind of evolutionary leap (customized to your location/interests/cookies etc) but it seems to be the same old click requests. Word lol is the most common in these spam tweets. We receive 400 spam tweets per hour now tracking 100K people. We plan to delete all of the tweets containing lol word. It is also used by our users (Turkish people) writing in English though. Any better suggestions? As long as you aren't trying to capture and deliver *all* tweets, there are a couple of good ways to cut out spammers. One thing I do is save all mentions for all users in a database of tweets. When a tweet comes in from the streaming API, I collect @mentions, and store them with the screen name of the tweet's author and the screen name mentioned. Then I can rank users based on the number of different accounts that mention them. If you only use the tweets from the top N% of users, the quality improves a lot. I find that the top 80% is usually enough of a screen to get good quality. Another trick is blocking duplicates from each user. The API only blocks duplicates that repeat immediately, but if a spammer has a list of tweets, and cycles through them, all the tweets get through. I compare all new tweets with the other tweets from that user. This is very expensive if you have a big database. This can be made less intensive by limiting the comparison to just the tweets from that user in the last few days. You can also run this with a separate process that doesn't slow down you main tweet parsing loop. Most spammers are so simplistic that they just repeat the same tweet over and over. In a real spammy set of keywords, if I find more than a few duplicates from a user, I just stop saving their tweets. Hmmm ... Twitter has a user quality filter that's supposed to weed out spammers from Search and Streaming. At about 450,000 new user IDs created every day, it might take a while for Twitter's spambot detectors to flag them all, but I'd think between algorithms and crowdsourced block / report, eventually they'd get taken out. -- M. Since yesterday, geocoded searches have been broken intermittently. Sometimes results are returned normally, then for stretches of time (30 minutes or more) no results are returned. [twitter-dev] collecting tweet message ids
Hi I would like to know how I can go about retrieving all the tweet message ids from a user's timeline? I am using the user_timeline to get the message ids, is there a better faster way? The following page seems to indicate I can obtain up to 3200 statuses. http://dev.twitter.com/doc/get/statuses/user_timeline However I am not able to fetch 3200 statuses. Also if I pass in a count of 200, I something only get 20 in my result other times 4, this occurs in the cases where there are say 4 statuses by the user. If I have to make multiple calls, how can I go about fetching a list of all the user_timeline message ids? Also can someone from please explain to me how the page parameter works, specially in the case of varying result sizes? Finally how is the message ordered in the user_timeline, can I make an assumption that the last status at the bottom on the page will always be older than the top? Hi! I am a newbie in the field and am working on my first twitter web app. I have created a variable loop timer using rate_limit_status which works well in maximizing the usage of the twitter API without going over the hourly limits. Now that I have incorporated OAuth, I was expecting to see the limit increase from 150 (unauthenticated requests) to 350 (authenticated requests). But, I am still seeing the 150 limit both in the response headers and Firebug when calling rate_limit_status API after OAuth. Is there something I'm missing here? so as to avoid going over the limits. It allowed me to fetch
approximately 15000 (100 per call) in 1 hour using unauthenticated
requests.

Well, I see. First of all oauth_signature is HMAC hash of your properly encoded query parameters, not oauth_token_secret. The idea is that only your app and Twitter may know it. Don't ever send it! Request token is like an authorization session ID, which you would exchange for an access token (You may not know access token before that, actually.) So, doublecheck http://dev.twitter.com/doc/post/oauth/request_token, it requires no authentication. All you need is to fetch oauth_request_token and oauth_request_secret. If you already have an access token, like in your example, you can work with all API's methods right away, but don't forget provide valid oauth_signature. However, the way I see it now, for every Twitter account that gets added to my application, the user will have to generate the access token. This process is very complicated is not user-friendly. Is it possible to use Wampserver to test OAuth? I can get basic OAuth to work on-line (on a real domain) but I can only debug PHP on my local Windows computer using Wampserver. Just thought I'd tell you guys about by Twitter library for Lua.

It's pretty easy to use. You create a client instance, and start
calling the API functions.
Here's an example using the login methods:

authurl = myclient:startLogin()

-- we assume the pin variable is called pin
assert(myclient:confirmLogin(), login failed)

As you can see, the API function methods use the actual Twitter API
variable names.
To check out what API functions correspond to the client methods, you
can use the following snippet:

end
That'll print all methods and what API functions they use.
Now, what if you need to store your user's authorization key? This is
also easy.
tokenkey = cl.oauthclient.m_oauth_token
tokensecret = cl.oauthclient.m_oauth_token_secret
-- store these variables somewhere
-- now, next time you start:
require(twitter)
myclient = twitter.client(consumer key, consumer secret, tokenkey,
tokensecret)

The API is not timed with, and still returns error 400! 404 returns in a few moments ... If I try to publish a tweet with other text, works perfectly. It may have been blocked? [twitter-dev] lang=en queries to search API not working
This reproduces even on http://search.twitter.com. If you try to
filter to en only results you get back 0 items for most queries.
Select try all languages from the search portal or remove lang=en
from your API query and you get results for your queries (most of
which are in english.)
What's weird is this seemed to be working fine until about 2 days
ago. And its been very intermittent since. Yesterday queries would
work for a while then they would stop working (same query to the
API.) But today they seem to be broken for me all day. Other members
of my team reported the same issue yesterday so it defenitly seems to
be something on your end.
BTW... When calling the API and this happens we're getting back an
error similar to this:
