We do it all the time every day with BCI through EasySoft. There are
some unfortunate limits (BCI doesn't handle many SQL types such as
BigInt properly, for example), but there are usually ways around them
based on how you write your queries.

FWIW, I have seen a UniVerse process jump from one CPU to another on a
dual-CPU box running NT 4. It was a big process and we were logging
system monitors to identify bottlenecks -- Rich Taylor might (or might
not, as it was years ago) remember helping us with our investigation.

Turns out I needed to recompile the Java program after setting LANG=C
(strange seeing it change partially before the compile). The server
doesn't have LANG set, but it is working now so I'm just making sure
LANG gets set permanently on the linux box.

Yes, BCI is the tool. If you're on Unix, you also need to have an ODBC
manager. Being on 64-bit HP-UX (which makes it hard to find compatible
OTS software), we ended up using EasySoft's ODBC-ODBC bridge (they made
a custom port to HP-UX for us), which is working great.
