[U2] universe errors

2008-01-15 Thread Doug Chanco
Hey all,

I fixed all our root running cron jobs by replacing uv with uvcron (
a "c" program) which got rid of all the

A fatal error has occurred in UniVerse.

Unable to re-open operating system file ""

Error code 2

Errors but I am still getting (very seldom though) the below error

PRINTER memory segment removed

What could still be causing this printer memory segment error if my root
cron jobs are not terminiating?

Also we stop and restart universe each night and when we do I get the
following error

An error has occurred during uniVerse initialization

Please contact the system administrator

Error code: 2 2

Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions welcome

Thanks

[U2] Sun Equipment

2008-01-15 Thread Jerry Banker
We have the following system we are no longer using and would like to
know if anyone would like to have it.

It was running when we unplugged it 6 months ago and if you're willing
to pay the shipping or haul it off then it's yours.

Sun Ultra Enterprise 450

4 - 400 MHZ RISC Processors

2 - SCSI Disc Controllers

8 - 36GB SCSI Disc Drives

2 - 18GB SCSI Disc Drives

1 - Gbit Ethernet Card

1 - 100Mbit Ethernet Internal

1 - Keyboard Model Type 6 w/mouse

1 - Keyboard Model Type 5c w/mouse

1 - Monitor Model CHB7727L

1 - Monitor Model 447

2 - GB memory

Solaris 8 installed (you will have to re-license it)

The amount of memory probably increased since the purchase but I'm not
sure how much.

RE: [U2] Phonetic Name Algorithms

2008-01-15 Thread Baker Hughes
Ray,

That sounds interesting. I can see why you would need a new approach to Maori
since the 1st step in Soundex is to collapse or remove the vowels altogether.
In a vowel heavy language this would be self defeating. Is there a degree of
intonation required to speak Maori? something else soundex doesn't consider.
How do you handle the extra vowels during segmentation/syllabification. What is
the application for your algorithm?

I'm trying to do some reading about Standard Arabic (SA). Thankfully there's
been some recent scholarly work done on this language. They discuss algorithms
and the additional/different rules for SA. I'm not sure yet how easily I'll be
able to convert their work into code.

The approach I'm leaning toward is to add 1 or 2 newer algorithms to the code
base, in addition to soundex (Hopefully one of the 3 will handle the name well)
then Build a separate index using each of these. Do a selectindex on each, make
a Union list, then present a match list to the User for human analysis.

Since U2 is now international, and with the advent of NLS, maybe IBM could
provide something more than the Basic SOUNDEX function. This would give them a
selling edge for getting U2 embedded in public safety apps.

Thanks,
-Baker

I have one that is suited to Pacific Islander languages, such as Maori, which
tend to be vowel-heavy.

[U2] AIX & Universe version

2008-01-15 Thread rogu2
We're migrating from an older AIX 4.x box with Universe 9.5 to a newer AIX 5.3
box.
200+ Universe users and lots of printers. Almost all of which are tcp
addressed.

What is the most stable version of Universe for AIX 5.3?

Thanks.

Thanks David! I'm going to try it for a little while and I'll let
everyone know if I find anything else

Hi Dianne

I have been testing with the PE environment before moving to live. The
version 10.1 would not run properly with vista, I could not access telnet
and the rpc was not robust. I download 10.2 and this seems to be working
with no problem. The administrator and other U2 eclipse tools are not
compatible with the vista graphics and vista downgrades graphics to run
these. Otherwise performance wise it seems OK. Vista does like memory,
performance is average at 1G memory but good at 2G.

Some VB6 applications do not work in Vista and if you use VS2005 you need to
install an additional service pack after service pack 1 and run it in
administration mode. (SQL Server 2005 also needs a special service pack.)

As Vista does not have administrator user as you would have had in XP, you
need to initialise the administrator user in the control panel>users as this
was often used to set up as the root users for universe and has the SQL
authorisations.

There is an option in the application properties to run an application in
administration mode (for compatibility issues) and you may need to do this
for any apps that are not performing well.

VPN is an issue particularly if a site uses CISCO PIX firewalls. Microsoft
no longer accepts MS CHAP 1 authentication, only MS CHAP 2. Some firewalls
do not handle MS CHAP 2 and this has caused issues.

The alternative option is to run virtual pc with windows xp or server 2003.
With 2GB memory this works fine and is great for demoing server applications
like sharepoint. I am able to access VPN from the Virtual PC to sites that
the host vista does not allow.

Otherwise after a few weeks of hair pulling it seems to be performing well.
