Re: [U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Bruce Decker

Can you:

SELECT filename WITH @ID = "offending_key"

If not, then it might be control chars or corruption in the key.
I've seen it before where the READNEXT can grab what it 'thinks' is the
key but if it contains some funky char, when you try to READ using that
key, the READ fails.

Another test:

SELECT filename
ED filename

If you can ED or AE all of them when stacked but can't when you specify
the key, it might be garbage in the key that's difficult to see.

You can sometimes READNEXT id then CRT OCONV( id, \MXOC\) to see the key
in hex and that might lead you to the issue.

Also if keys are written containing @AM, it will create multiple entries
in the select stack where each part of the key becomes it's own element
in the select stack. When you look at the list, it seems right but when
processing in basic, it's not quite right.

When I debug it further, I get this symptom.

In a Universe BASIC program, I can OPEN the file (a type 1 directory) I can

When I try to READ one of these items (windows files) I get in the ON ERROR

What has occurred? Who has messed with what? How do I fix it?

Open Office et, al can be a bit finicky about the order of files in the

Good points. My view is that it is usually not a matter of whether the
failure should be catastrophic. It's usually a matter of who should be
in in control of the catastrophe. If you call a object that bombs, the
caller will never know why because control never returns to the caller.
   With this technique, if you don't get a validated response, you can
certainly choose 'go on' in the main program but you chould also choose
to make it a catastrophe. The point is that your main program regains
control after it provokes failure and can choose what to do with the
failure. As you point out, it might just log the error but it could
logoff, or throw some other hissy instead of moving forward. Note that
the capture variable 'result' will contain the failure message. That
could be parsed to to whatever...

*For example:

*   IF INDEX( result, \%%validated%%\, 1) THEN
 CALL userSubroutine(foo, bar...)

But then I could see where this would create resiliency with some
non-critical function that could be fixed after the fact, like a
cross-referencing subroutine which sets up cross-references, just to
add feature.

Your technique allows the failure and keeps moving forward, with
hopefully an error log entry so someone could fix it.

Almost like an error message from the system when you don't initialize

Hi,

LeRoy Dreyfuss said that you would have to change 52 to 12 for EXIST to work.

The globally cataloged programs have an extra 40 characters put on the front,
so that would cause a problem.

@RECORD[1,4] is a count of the number of times the program has been used.

@RECORD[5,8] is who cataloged it

@RECORD[13,4] are the date and time (I think)

Re: [U2] Report Generation

2014-01-16 Thread Bruce Decker
For lightweight reports and dashboards, I use U2 -> XML -> PHP ->
JQuery. I've baked this into the Joomla Content Management system so
that users on browsers, smart phones, tablets can access U2 data in
responsive templates on any device. jQuery is fast and the sorting,
filtering happens in the browser so there is no back and forth to the
server. It's not a drill-down tool and is not the best choice for
massive reports but deployment requires no special licensing and only a
browser. With jQuery, we can show the data as grids, charts, and more
and with Joomla CMS as the front-end, it's very easy to manage. I'm
deploying customer invoices and statements using Joomla CMS with jQuery
so that the statement and invoice body is fully filterable, sortable,
and cleanly importable to office apps all in the browser.

Re: [U2] Migrating UniVerse 10.1.20 on HP-UX to UV 11.x on Redhat Linux

2014-01-08 Thread Bruce Decker
If we are talking about migration between endians, I usually just move
the lot via tar or system-to-system RSYNC then use fnuxi to perform the
endian conversion in batch like this:

cd /path/to/where/accounts/live
find . -name "*" -exec /path/to/uv/bin/fnuxi {} \;

This targets everything in /path/to/where/accounts/live including hashed
files that live in sub-sub directories. It targets files that are not
universe and have no need for a fnuxi conversion. fnuxi seems to check
the header of the file and determine if its a universe hashed file and,
if not, skips it. The technique relies on fnuxi's discrimination. It
blows a lot of stuff to the screen as it tells you that it's not going
to process many of the file files it encounters because they are not
hashed files. In the end it will have traversed everything you laid
down into that directory and it's subdirectories and performed a fnuxi
conversion on everything hashed. I've not tried this with dynamic files
but I think it will work with those too.

Of course, one would be wise to perform a backup of the lot before
attempting any enmasse data conversion... just in case.

Hi,

The general consensus seems to be that when migrating UniVerse across platforms
the best approach is to use UVBACKUP on the old platform and then UVRESTORE on
the target platform and all platform issues are taken care of.
We, however have just attempted this process in migrating UniVerse 10.1.20 on
HP-UX to UV 11.x on Redhat Linux and have come across the following problem ...

UVBACKUP seemed to worked OK (we were able to restore on old platform UVRESTORE
seemed to work OK on target platform

In the above screenshot the directory contains UniVerse files but UniVerse
doesn’t recognise them. UniVerse can’t run in this directory without its
essential database files. Answering “Y” to the question also won’t work as
UniVerse is unable to initialise the directory while it contains rubbish files
having the same names as the required UniVerse files.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Michael

Period. That's all. Anything else you read into it, was not present.

The purpose of customer testimonials is to get their own personal experience.
That's for what I was looking. Solely.

Okay:
Let me try it this way. I've known and worked with Pete for over 25
years. In ALL of that time, I've found that the quality of his products
are first rate, he does not exaggerate claims (which is what I thought
the original post was suggesting) and if there was an issue (rare) he is
very responsive and quick to resolve the issue. I believe if Pete tells
you something, you can take it to the bank. I think this is helpful
information especially for those who may not know Pete and wonder if
they can rely on information he is providing.

I should have spelled it out instead of being snarky. My apologies.

Re: [U2] BASIC code - upper, lower, CamelCase, what say you?

2013-12-20 Thread Bruce Decker
Depends on how portable you want your code to be. Some older systems,
even some symbols are case insensitive. For U2, Unidata is pickier out
of the box about keyword case than UniData. I've settled on UPPERCASE
for reserved words and camelCase for variables. But old-school die
hards think it's totally unreadable. I think if you program in other
languages, you find it appealing. If I discard the criticism of those
who still embrace GOTO, then the objections are probably 1 out of 4.
You know the programmer is poser if he writes GOTO as goTo :-)

First off - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

I'm starting to write a lot of new BASIC (Universe 11.1) subroutines for
our DesignBais application, and since I'll be starting with a blank code
template instead of modifying existing code, and I thought 'hey why not
join the 21st century' and make the code look more mainstream, and
readable. (falling back on our last TEXMUG presentation by Clif Oliver on
refactoring).

And considering Universe 11.2 now supports local subroutines and functions,
I should make the code look and behave more object-like.

Does anyone know of a set of rules or guidelines on how to do this?Just
experimenting briefly, Universe BASIC compiler will allow any mix of cases
for keywords, but variables are case sensitive. Example:

ED BP TEST

ABC=1
Abc=2
abc=3
PRINT ABC
Print Abc
pRiNt abc
stop
end

RUN TEST

1
2
3

So, how are developers mixed case in their code these day? Do keywords,
local variables, common variable, equates follow a standard method?

thanks in advance,

Re: [U2] Exporting to File regularly

2013-12-11 Thread Bruce Decker
Triggers are probably the way, but if you have a touchy vendor, they might
not appreciate your trigger as much as you do. If triggers aren't an
option, maybe this could work (at least on a smallerish file):

*Assume the filename is FOO and the id is @ID*

*At ECL/TCL:*
SSELECT FOO BY-DSND @ID
SELECT FOO SAMPLE 1
SAVE-LIST HIGHEST_NUMBER

*In a PROC*
PQ
HSSELECT FOO BY-DSND @ID
STON
HSELECT FOO SAMPLE 1<
HSAVE-LIST HIGHEST_NUMBER
P

*In BASIC*
EXECUTE \SSELECT FOO BY-DSND @ID\ RTNLIST foolist
EXECUTE \SELECT FOO SAMPLE 1\ PASSLIST foolist RTNLIST foolist
EXECUTE \SAVE-LIST HIGHEST_NUMBER\ PASSLIST foolist

Now, the highest ID in the file is contained in the directory &SAVEDLISTS&
in the file/item HIGHEST_NUMBER.

Depending on the type of data in @ID (e.g., numeric or alpha ) you may need
to create a special @ID that is right justified to achieve the desired sort
order.

Re: [U2] UD PE 7.1.0 - Use of EXECUTE with the RTNLIST option

2013-11-20 Thread Bruce Decker
This is a reply to a old post but since this is the top search result for
RTNLIST, I'll post a reply with useful info. Unidata's BASIC compiler seems
to be quite particular about the ORDER of the clauses on an Execute. Put
RTNLIST, RETURNING AND CAPTURING in the wrong order and you'll see a error
like this:

Compiling Unibasic: mysource\test4 in mode 'p'.
main program: syntax error at or before
 EXECUTE \SELECT VOC\ RETURNING junk RTNLIST l.voc CAPTURING screen;
 --^
Misuse of reserved word 'RTNLIST'
Expecting: end-of-file,END

compilation failed

Here is the code with examples of proper order of the clauses on an execute
and the final example of EXECUTE producing the failure message above...

done = @FALSE
l.voc = \\
i = 0
EXECUTE \SELECT VOC\ RTNLIST l.voc

; *compiles ok
EXECUTE \SELECT VOC\ RTNLIST l.voc RETURNING junk  ;
*compiles ok
EXECUTE \SELECT VOC\ RTNLIST l.voc RETURNING junk CAPTURING screen;
*compiles ok
EXECUTE \SELECT VOC\ RETURNING junk RTNLIST l.voc CAPTURING screen; *fails
compile
LOOP
READNEXT id FROM l.voc ELSE done = @TRUE
UNTIL done DO
   i=+ 1
REPEAT
CRT i:\ records counted\
STOP
