Re: [U2] Reasons to continue with Software vendor support

2012-06-29 Thread John Varney
I have a potential issue coming up. Our CFO seems to want to be more penny
pinching than normal and is trying to get us to discontinue our support from
our main vendor (We currently use ManFact from EpiCor). This seems like a
REALLY bad idea, but it keeps coming up. Can I get some outside opinions on
why we should keep the support going? I'd like as many as possible because
I'd like to put an end to this once and for all. All comments would be
welcome.

Yeah, the bank representative mentioned the Debit-Credit switch. I'm not
worried about actually writing the code to create the flat file, I'm just
looking for potential issues with the overall process.

the pain. I do recall some confusion over 'debit' vs 'credit'.
If my company would allow it, I would publish the program (it's only about
300 lines), but that's not going to happen.

I found out that there were variations to the file format on the

I like the idea of a 3rd party but it isn't feasible due to the CFO being a
penny-pincher. We DO use an outside firm for payroll, and I'd advise against
trying to do that processing in house.

Essentially we're just paying vendors and bolting this functionality onto
the AP module.

Think of this: you spend all the time and effort to re-invent the wheel
(that a 3rd party should already do very well). A year down the road,
something goes wrong. You are now in a crisis to get paychecks out on time
with code that you are not familiar with.

If you think a problem with Month End is bad, that is NOTHING compared to
all the employees not getting their pay check! Think pitchforks and burning
torches.

Create a simple export and let someone else deal with it.

I recently went to work for a company that is running UniVerse over Solaris.
This seems to be working really well.

We are running ManFact and are setting up multi-plant operations. As part of

I'm not doing the upgrade as I kinda walked into the middle of it, and the
person who is doing it seems very well versed in ManFact so no worries
there.

My question is where do we change the default login account? Come next
Monday, people should not be logging into MANLIVE. We looked at the initial
login script on Solaris but that just starts a uv session. Any ideas?

I also thought: great explanation and nodded sagely when I read this.
However, consider this code:

 NUL = ''

 CM = ','

 A = -409071.8775: CM: 475000: CM: -652413: CM: 652413: CM:
-475000: CM: 409071.8775

  *

  *

 TEST.VMC = 1

 TEST.TOTAL = 0

  *

LOOP UNTIL FIELD(A, CM, TEST.VMC) = NUL DO

TEST.TOTAL += FIELD(A, CM, TEST.VMC)

TEST.VMC += 1

 REPEAT

  *

 IF TEST.TOTAL = 0 THEN

PRINT 'OK'

 END ELSE

PRINT TEST.TOTAL, (TEST.TOTAL = 0), TEST.TOTAL - 0,
(OCONV(TEST.TOTAL, 'MD0') = 0)

 END

Running this on our Universe system 11.1.1 produces:

  0 0 0 1

So, in other words zero is the total result in TEST.TOTAL but this does
not equate to zero.

Now I know I can get round this by rounding the answer but am not sure
why I should have to. Any ideas?

  Thanks

  Hi George,
As a general rule in programming, comparison of floating point values
for equality should be avoided. This is because, just as we cannot
write the number one third accurately in decimal notation, so the IEEE
floating point format used by computer systems cannot store numbers
accurately. The example that I use when teaching training courses is
14.2 which actually ends up as something close to 14.197.
UniVerse gets around this with a wonderful concept called wide zero
that says, when testing for equality of floating point numbers, they
must be within some specified value of being equal rather than
strictly equal. The default wide zero error tolerance, set in IEEE
format with the WIDEZERO configuration parameter, is 2.91 * 10^-11 (2^
  035) which is good for most business applications but occasionally
needs adjusting.
Unidata has a command, SET.WIDEZERO, to serve the same purpose but
defaults to 0.0 for backward comaptibility.

[U2] HELP!!! with MVEnterprise and DigiPort Problem

2007-03-05 Thread John Varney
I have a REAL strange problem here.

We just went from an old box to new box.
AIX version 5.3
MVEnterprise 4.2
Digi Realport v3.8.7

We went from AIX v5.2 to 5.3
MVEnterprise 4.1 to 4.2

Most everything went painlessly except when we tried to get our Digiports
up. The error we get is as follows:

 ** prodpick 82 tty82 ** Terminal path '/dev/tty82' open errno 11
* prodpick 82 tty82 ** Child exit; mvEnterprise status 11

Trying to go back to the old box yields the SAME error.

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have a solution for this?

 Hello,

The City of Redwood City is running its own, custom, legacy financial
system on Universe (NT). We are also currently set up with Standard
Register and running Linkup v. 5.1 for checks and secured forms design
and printing. We would like to explore other solutions, that would
hopefully make us less reliant on a single vendor.

Any tips, advice and stories on how you print checks and other forms in
your own organization would be welcome.

If you install a MICR DIMM chip into the printer you can print the
 available
fonts. If it is not listed the normal TROY font is:

[esc](0Q[esc](s1p12v0s0b0T

Then simply reference this in your output stream, like:

[esc]a650h7725V to loca the printer cursor, then

 [esc](0Q[esc](s1p12v0s0b0TC0012002524C A123456789A12 3456789
 019C[esc]

 ...where:

 1) C0012002524C is the check ID used by the bank,
 2) A123456789 is the Federal Reserve and bank routing#, and
 3) 12 3456789 019C is the bank account#.

Now reset the character set (or change the font) like [esc](8U.

 Hope this helps.

International Spectrum would like to invite the U2 User Group to

 John;

As Bill says - it's a lot easier to get the chip. I think all of our
 clients work that way.

You also need to use the special MICR toner. Usually it's harder to
 move
the toner to a different printer than the chip. Remember that the M in
MICR is for magnetic. It's special toner.

The best part is that they usually come with a template you can use to
line up the MICR line. It has to be in a specific location and format
 for the automatic readers.

I wish I could do it that way, but the checks are coming
  directly from
a unix box via a routine that uses PCL5 to format blank
  stock. As far as

I can tell I have to either use a laser printer with the MICR font
permanently installed or use an MICR soft type font that is loaded to
  the
printer via PCL5 commands each time a check run is done.

I was wondering if anyone else has done anything like this
  and if they
would share HOW they did it.

RE: [U2] MICR fonts with UniData

2006-06-26 Thread John Varney
I'm looking at that as one option. Do you know if those DIMMs can be used
in more than one printer, for instance the laser printer with the DIMM
goes down. Can I trnasplant the DIMM into another like printer (HP 8100,
9000, etc) to get checks out the door?

Make you life easier and use a MICR font DIMM chip. They can be
 purchased
from TROY and make programming much easier and are much more reliable.

 print
checks and am wondering how other people hander the MICR font for
 account
 / routine numbers. Thanks.

On our Sun Solaris the UV administrator was uv and belonged to the sys
group.
I tried entering this on our new RH Linux system and logging in but it will
not allow me to do any of the administrator functions. It tells me I have to
be a super user. Do I have to log in as root (or su) to administer UV now?

How about cleaning up our mouths.

Give the offending user 1 warning and remove him/her from the list on the
2nd offense.

Anyone who can not express his/her thoughts without the use of foul language
needs to expand his/her vocabulary to be offered the privilege to
participate with the finest group of professionals in the multivalue
community.

We can not afford to lose our best people because of the thoughtlessness of
a few.

Have a nice weekend,

Miscellaneous suggestions that can be taken one at a time or combined:
 - Have the mail sent to some non-filtered e-mail server like hotmail and
then have people poll that server from their normal e-mail client or a
 different one.
 - Get the digest version, zip it, then manually distribute to employees
 periodically.
 - Automate that process as a programming exercise.
 - Pay someone to write up that functionality and send digests.
 - Have someone post digests to an FTP site.
 - Write code to pre-filter mail for bad words then resend it to your U2
 developers.
 - Read mail through a web interface.
 - Educate the company IT staff on how to properly filter mail with
combinations of keyword black lists and e-mail address white lists.
 - Get new mail filter software.
 - Get a new IT staff.

 HTH,
 Tony

I just thought I would let you know that our UniVerse Programing Team
has been asked to quit receiving emails from this list because our
company's email filter catches a lot of the emails for curse words.
Grant it, some of them are relatively minor curse words but I have no
control over what they filter. Nor, do I have control of their choice of
  filtering programs.

One of our operators reviews the quarantined emails and forwards those
that are work related. This puts a real workload on them when a
cursing email receives a number of responses. We have 10 UniVerse
programmers in our company so it can generate a lot of emails to review.

I do not want to have to remove myself, or my programmers, from the list
so I thought I would let everyone know how this is affecting the people
  at my company.

  Thanks for listening,
