RE: [U2] sigh phantom ?
Doug I guess you're talking about U2 Internals type knowledge - what's hidden under the covers, behind those fancy GUI interfaces? The kinda stuff you can automate and interface your application to make it 'smart' - especially for monitoring or reporting-type stuff? Just ask and someone will tell you what you need to know...lots of knowledge here. Susan: You can set up UniAdmin to manage any server from your client machine. They just need to open, and route, port 31438 (or whatever) to the U2 server. I do this with all the servers I manage and don't need remote desktop access. I'm not sure what minimum permissions are required to perform the dbms administration though as I'm normally connecting as an administrator. But then, the dbms server is normally a separate machine so security isn't compromised. Re: IBM DOCS was: RE: [U2] sigh phantom ?
I think the point Doug was making regarding ibm docs is that they don't contain all the little tidbits of knowledge that most of the old timers have gleaned throughout the years. For example, the port.status hex address thingy and what it denotes. Toward that end, I want to encourage anyone and everyone who has this knowledge share it with the rest of us on PickWiki.com and/or u2ugWiki.com. I think Doug's frustration that the IBM administration docs typically focus on uniadmin, not so much on the details of port.status and similar utilities. I share that frustration too. rex --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/

Re: IBM DOCS was: RE: [U2] sigh phantom ?
Bill, usually we do not load UniAdmin on client machines - only on the servers. But I will remember that if I ever need a feature that is only accessible via UniAdmin. My preference is to just shell out to a command prompt and type in the commands rather than making the client make another port accessible - I don't need pretty graphics, just information. I am not averse to SMIT or UniAdmin or any other nice tools, but I don't see why anyone would necessarily force their use rather than document the commands in addition to providing the pretty interface. RE: IBM DOCS was: RE: [U2] sigh phantom ?
Susan: I'm not debating your point. I've found the software I use these days creates all kinds of new connections all over the place. Often, we find a lot of software piggybacks connections over HTTP, which require plug-ins (citrix, etc). So, I'm looking to minimize my use of software rather than trying to see what's happening under the covers. I don't care anymore. What I like about UniAdmin is it works on Unix or Windows, so the same tool can administer both U2 products from anywhere I have my machine. So, I install on one machine and access multiple servers. Anyway, my priorities are to reduce exposing myself to even more software that only works 95% of the time. :-) Bill -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Susan Lynch Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2007 1:19 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: IBM DOCS was: RE: [U2] sigh phantom ? RE: [U2] sigh phantom ?
Doug, the 0xACEB9359 indicates a phantom ;-). I don't have access to a system at the moment so there may be another way. The 0xACEB9359 is a reference to a shared memory segment. The 0xACE indicates that it is a Universe related shared memory segment. The B indicates it is a user printer shared memory segment. The 9539 is a hex number which when converted to decimal will give a user number. A regular user number will be in the range 10 through nnn where nnn represents the number of universe sessions on the system. A large number around the 64k mark indicates a phantom user. I think this is all correct from memory. Other types of Universe shared memory segments have other letters, again from memory C,D etc... The piece in brackets represents the program name and address within the code. You can get the actual line number by doing a VLIST on the program. RE: [U2] sigh phantom ?
PORT.STATUS shows the last executed command - the info not in brackets. If you're still in a program, that will show up in brackets. The hex number is some kind of address or offset that points to 'where' in the program you are. As for phantom vs. regular, if this were a 'regular' login, you'd see a port number instead of the hex number between the user name and the command. Re: [U2] sigh phantom ?
Doug, In UV on Windows: The LISTU command designates phantom processes as phantom:(PID) rather than telnet:(PID) and displays both the date and time the process started. Each phantom process also appears in the PH file and contains the name of the process that was started as a phantom and the time and date it was started. This should help you identify any specific process. hth, Dave Dave Taylor Sysmark Information Systems, Inc.
